The morning BG spike is called Dawn Phenomenon. I'm a T1D and understand it well. There are a few ways to address this. Sometimes an adjusted basal regimen can be the answer. Work with your doctor (& experienced diabetic individuals) and hopefully you can curtail this issue.

Great video! Glad low carb is working well for breakfast. I eat it all the time since earlier this year which really helped my sugars. I don't feel tired from the crazy blood sugar swings anymore and am just amazed at the fact that I can find most low carb alternatives, which makes me feel like I"m not deprived. I can even eat cake if I want baking it with almond flour. I feel like I'm having my cake and eating it too. My husband eats low carb also which really helps me. I realize that everyone is different though and it might not be for everyone.

Uggg I hate when other people tell me I should go keto. Its like my BG sometimes goes higher just by being stressed out or taking a shower rather then eating. But at the same time its anoying when my T1D friend will have his blood sugar go up to 300 just cause he wanted the cake everyone elses having cause it tastes good and he can. T1Ds can have anything. But having anything comes with Consequences of crazy BG’s. You dont have to go keto, but dont Deliberately eat something you is going to make your BG crazy just cause everyone elses having it. Not worth it to risk the long term affects of T1D. I dont want to be that person that goes blind and think if only I ate more low carb. I’m editing a type 1 tuesday on this right now!

even as someone whose health is better eating low carb, i think it's unrealistic for people to think that you can thrust a full time low carb diet on a kid. it must be hard enough for him to have all these medical needs. if he wanted to go low carb on his own it would be one thing (not that i really think a kid would want to), but forcing on one more thing that makes him "different" from all his friends just doesn't seem worth it to me when there is no guarantee that it would improve his day to day health. you know him best and you're the best person to make dietary decisions for him! completely outside opinion, but just thought i'd share my two cents!

We feed our whole family low carb and Keto for the most part. Our kids are fine and happy and thriving. 60 percent of Americans are insulin resistant and diabetes runs in so many families. Most people would be surprised if they took the glucose tolerance test or had a fasting insulin test drawn they would most likely be insulin resistant. So it’s good for the majority of people not just type 1 it can prevent the many people who are insulin resistant and pre diabetic from eventually becoming type 2 as well.

As a brilliant woman I know once said: "Being a "normal kid" means having normal blood sugars, not eating cupcakes and donuts". Children are too young to make nutritional decisions for themselves. We need to make them. Setting an example by making your whole household eat healthier and normalizing it within the home will give your child the tools to manage Type 1 on his or her own. "Normal" isn't eating cupcakes and donuts. That shouldn't be normal for anyone. And the old adage applies. If everyone else was jumping off a bridge, would you do it? Normal is over-rated.

I fully agree. I do love her channel but I've chosen a different route for my child who is type 1. Shes low carb and we do just fine. Everyone has their own opinion of what normal for their child is and for mine I'd rather her have normal sugars than feel normal around kids . She explains to her friends why she eats the ways she eats and they are very open and interested . The kids that think it's weird or try to make fun of her she has stood up to them . I've taught her that not everybody will be nice about it and she stands up for herself she is proud that she eats the way she does. Honestly being hospitalized at 3 scarred her so bad because she had never had any health issues and the amount of poking and prodding that was done to her just to eat in the hospital made her feel terrible . Doing her diet this way has created less stress for her and I. But I do love dreamflight channel because of the recipes I tweak them for the way we eat but I get a lot of ideas from her

I’m fairly newly diagnosed, and still get confused about if it’s okay to eat fruit and such and try not to restrict carbs because I know ultimately that is bad for you. It really is an art not a science to be able to pick up on what your body does at certain times of the day or with certain foods. I just try to stick with what I was told when I was originally diagnosed which is that I can still have whatever I want ( within reason) so I shouldn’t be afraid of any foods or feel like they are completely off the table ( literally and figuratively 😆) for me

Low carb, long term is proven to give you insulin resistance, like having diabetes wasn't hard enough!! But I do feel unprocessed, whole foods have merit with me and my diabetes!! Dawn phenomenon is so-ooo difficult, but since going whole food plant based, my spikes are not nearly as high and lows are corrected so much quicker because my insulin doses are so much less!! You guys are the most wonderful parents in the world and Henry is so-ooo lucky to have you behind him all the way with your love and support! As always, you are in my prayers!!❤ Amy I APOLOGIZE!! I should NEVER have begun my post with negative thoughts about keto diets I just deleted that part. I also apologize to anyone I offended!

M P A Munson this is not true. I have very well controlled blood sugar on a Keto low carb diet I started when I was pregnant with gestational diabetes over 2.5 years ago. My sugars are always either 100 or around 85 to 90. Also all of my boys are low carb and they grow each year and their pediatrician is happy with their health.

@@Janarae18 I am in no way saying low carb doesn't help with getting good blood sugars!! But long term studies have shown that the long term effects, greatly increase insulin resistance for both type 1 and type 2 diabetics, and since most people following a keto diet eat a lot of fat, cardiovascular disease is greatly increased! I applaud you for being able to eat low carb for so long!! I couldn't do it!! My wfpb(whole food plant based) with no sos (salt, oil, sugar)way of eating has given me decreases in low blood sugars and high b.s., I take half my bolus as well as half my basal insulins,I eat at least 400/500 carbs a day, grains, fruits, veggies, beans. I eat a total of 15g a day of nuts and seeds( this is the hardest part for me) My cholesterol and a1c were the best they've ever been,124 and 4.6. Shutting up now😊,I only wish the best for you and your family!!

@@dreamflight6000 Never heard of dawn phenomenon? I found an online statement. "The Dawn Phenomenon: If you have diabetes, your body doesn't release more insulin to match the early-morning rise in blood sugar. It's called the dawn phenomenon, since it usually happens between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. The dawn phenomenon happens to nearly everyone with diabetes. " They say it's the bodies natural rush of hormones to get the body revved up to start the day. There are a few ways to prevent it, including: Don’t eat carbohydrates before you go to bed. Take insulin before bedtime instead of earlier in the evening.

We prebolus my son 30 minutes before breakfast, otherwise his BG spikes to over 300mg/dl. I don't know what it is about breakfast, but we don't prebolus at any other meal of the day and he's fine. So we have to get up at 6:00 or 6:15 at the latest to get to school at 8:00 (I wouldn't prebolus while he's still fast alseep!). Of course prebolusing doesn't always do the trick, but most days ir works just fine.

The yogurt is Oikos Triple Zero Glad that you’ve found something that works for you guys!!! It never ceases to amaze me how people have no problem commenting on other people’s dietary choices without being asked. I’ve had someone with a grocery cart full of junk food tell me I had too much meat in my cart. The most aggravating was when I took my kids to a trampoline park and my youngest daughter came running to me hysterically crying because she had told a little boy that I had T1 and he told her that I was going to have my foot cut off and die. As I was explaining to her why that was wrong, he came over (chugging a high sugar juice) telling her that I was lying and I was going to die and that sugar is poison. Of course his parents were nowhere to be seen..... it took so much restraint to remain grown up and not show him the nutrition facts on his juice and ask why his parents were trying to poison him. Don’t sweat the food police! You’re doing great!

Any unbalanced diet is unhealthy and I guarantee that no one follows a specific diet 100% (unless it's medically prescribed or something like that.) I'm so sick of hearing about keto I want to scream. It's unbalanced just like most others (I mean bacon is somehow okay, but whole grains aren't?!) I've heard (non-diabetic here) that morning spikes can be hormone related.

What is unhealthy is unbalanced and very high blood sugars. What we see in the nondiabetic population is strong evidence that a functioning pancreas cant keep up with the constant insult of rapid acting sugar and grain. T1ds pay the price quickly as the elevated blood sugars damage every cell in the body.

@@dreamflight6000 there's more to it than just low carb. You have to learn to use insulin to cover protein as well, which raises blood sugar slowly. Once you figure that out, the 'growth sports' will mysteriously vanish. There's more to it than just the low carbo.

Did you know that grains only entered the human diet about 10,000 years ago? And that human health significantly worsened when they became a significant part of the diet? Our bodies evolved to eat meat and veggies. That is the ultimate in balanced diets.

This is one of the worst comments I’ve seen. Care to show a picture of YOUR fridge and pantry? The only time you should look down on someone is if you’re helping them up. As a T1 and a keto fanatic, comments like this really are not helpful. Type 1 diabetics are at a significantly higher risk of eating disorders. Keto can be great, but forcing it on someone, especially a child who already has to pay higher than normal scrutiny over what they’re eating, what’s in it, how much of what is in it, and possible impacts..... that can be very damaging.....more so than the effects of a few spikes treated with insulin. Look up diabulimia.... SCARY SCARY stuff. As an adult I CHOSE to do keto and do 100% feel it is what is best for me, but if my child developed T1 I would absolutely not pressure them into it or force them into it. It’s so easy to judge other people, but it’s even easier to keep quiet when you don’t have anything kind or constructive to say. Most every parent does what they feel is best for their children and family, and lazy is the last word that comes to mind when I watch Amy’s videos. No two diabetics are the same, and ideal treatment will be very individual. We deal with enough judgement from ignorant people, we need to support and love one another
