I am 71 years old, and had diabetes for about 25 years. I also enjoy coffee, I regulary check my blood glucose, with glucometer. As long as there is no sugar or sweetener in the coffee, it does not cause blood sugar to go up. Just drink and enjoy the coffee as it is, don't add anything, including milk. I also now avoid carbohydrate consuption, in meals and drinks.

I am 80 years old and have lost 73 lbs in the last four years by quitting bread and all high glycemic foods. During that time I also shed type II D, acid reflux, gout, high B/P and what seemed like bone on bone arthritis. My weight loss of two lbs a month has stalled now and I am being knocked out of ketosis every morning without consuming a single carb. You have presented the first sensible explanation I have found. Thank you. So many of our health problems seem to stem from inadequate information. You are doing great work with concise information. Thank you. Coffee is as addicting as carbs. As a pre-diabetic, caffeinated coffee or tea used to have the opposite effect on me, especially if I drank a cup of coffee on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. My blood sugar would crash, causing all kinds of hypoglycemic complications, including lightheadedness, weakness, shakiness, sweating, extreme hunger, and anxiety. As soon as I would eat something, especially containing sugar, I would start to recover within minutes. One time after drinking coffee in a cafe during a long fast, I almost passed out and came close to going into a comma. It took my body about 3 weeks to fully recover from that episode. I stopped drinking coffee after that, but have recently started back on decaffeinated coffee.

I have been a diabetic since i was 24 years old, i am now 42. I quit coffee when i was 30 years old altogether. I did not drink it every day but when i did as when i would visit friends or my parents... It did me absolutely no favors. I still wont have it today. It jolts my blood sugar levels to spike and jump up and down throughout the day. And i just feel sick and ill. Plus it dehydrates me. Here is the funny thing though. Green Tea actually helps me manage my blood sugar and make me feel at peace. I am no scientist and neither am i a doctor. Both Coffee and Tea contain caffeine. However, one is from a bean, the other is from a leaf. I believe its got to do with how ppl's metabolism works. Thank you for the video.

I've been drinking plain black coffee for all my life. Every single day. My blood sugar readings are always perfectly normal according to the results of my annual blood work. I think you may be speaking of coffee with adjuncts such as dairy and refined sugar. In all met-analysis( large studies of studies) I have reviewed as a healthcare, professional, and a researcher, it has been demonstrated that any glucose increase from coffee is extremely temporary and not long lasting and does not affect any propensity towards type two diabetes, we need more data on type one diabetes, but close monitoring is much the standard here already, please do your research before you send out alarming KZbin videos because you are a doctor does not mean you are credible. These meta-analysis include thousands of subjects, huge sample sizes and show no effect except that the net effect is that the polyphenols in coffee actually lower the chances of advancing to type2, from pre diabetes or insulin resistance by consuming coffee.

Having the filter in brewed drip coffee traps chemicals in the coffee that a french press does not. I read the article a couple of years ago. I just wanted to share that tidbit so you all can look for yourselves, incase you have tryglyceride issues as well.

Great video. very helpful! my blood glucose spiked from 137 morning fasted and a half hour later it was up to 157. I am only considered "prediabetic" but have been "prediabetic" for the past 30 years after have gestational diabetes with both pregnancies. Zero sugar, low carb, but still struggling. maybe changing or letting go of my coffee habit will help. the coffee was black but still spiking my blood glucose. bummer

Hey Jennifer, it might be worth trying decaf for a couple of weeks and monitoring your levels, or perhaps having food before the coffee. You may also find this video helpful: "How to control dawn phenomenon": kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKHPc2yMps2Hhac Keep fighting!

I just have 1>coffee, then use 2>Silk Almond milk unsweetened and add 3>Splenda Stevia sweetner (not super sweet but not bland as just black coffee). January I was told I am type 2 diabetes so I made some changes to reduce my blood sugar level. I don't drink milk (little diary in my diet) since it has lots of sugar. For years never thought milk had much sugar, sure was ignorant. I even stop drinking Coke/Pepsi No Sugar (even though no sugar the other ingrediates are bad for you over time I heard). So I drink sparkling water with Country Time Lemonade (I think sucrolose isnt as bad as aspartame but affects gut health so not perfect but a bit better than Coke/Pepsi). Also Liptons Green Tea (Ginseng/Lemon) is good in the evening. Hope this helps others, glad you help inform diabetic people with tips; thank you SugarMD.

A friend who is Type 1 diabetic told me to use Pure Maple Syrup when I could not say no to sugar as it would not spike my blood sugar levels. So I use it maybe 2X a month and about the same for coconut sugar. However, this is all subject to each person. It is indeed, trial & error.

More excellent advice so I drink my coffee in the afternoon when I go for my walks because exercise lowers my blood sugar. I use a French press for my coffee so I can shorten the brew time. Thank you for the informative video.

After finding out I was developing diabetes 2, I gave up eating bread, potato, pasta and all other garbage food. I adjusted my food to eggs, vegetables, protein and fat. Glucose levels have come down since than, but sometimes I measure a glucose spike of 160 and I really like to get that spike lower. In the morning before breakfast the level is around 100-110. I have two possible causes. The liver still processing the overload of glucose or it’s the coffee I drink. Or is a spike to around 160 actually nothing to worry about. I am 59 btw

All in all you're not doing too bad. Could be the Dawn Phenomenon with your fasting levels (what you alluded to with the liver dumping glycogen into the blood). Also, you could test the coffee theory and go without for one week and compare. Also, no coffee with dinner or after dinner. And of course no caffeinated coffee first thing in the morning (that's just asking for trouble). Be sure to get organic if you're buying decaf. Supposedly, caffeine is a natural insecticide but decaf is sprayed heavily. Organic decaf should be free of chemical insecticides/pesticides.

Matthew Hoffman did a video on this and showed his glucose monitor results with trying different times he drank it with different types of breakfasts, it was really interesting. I had no idea that my preferred coffe methods were low caffeine. If I have a small amount of light roast I’m buzzing like crazy, I don’t like it. I like my roast to be as dark as possible, always 100% arabica beans, brewed in my French press and stuck in a blender with some butter, it’s like a no sugar latte. Top it’s with cinnamon and I’m a happy guy.

My blood sugar spikes by nearly 100 points EVEN THOUGH I inject more than enough insulin prior to drinking coffee...and it doesn't matter if it's caffeinated or decaf! It basically takes nearly 2 hours for my blood sugar to get back down around 100. If I inject more insulin after drinking coffee, it usually ends up getting too low. I really believe there's more the coffee problem than just caffeine. And, I do love a good, strong/bold coffee whether it's caffeinated or not. I rarely ever eat breakfast when I have my coffee. I'll try some of your suggestions...like the cold brew and eating a high protein breakfast. I use a Dexcom sensor, so I can see my blood sugar levels in real time. May get back to you on this once I try what you've suggested. Thank you very much!

I was once told by a coffee barista that cold brew has the highest levels of caffeine - more than coffee brewed with hot water/steam. That may possibly, be your hidden cause, POSSIBLY. You may be raising your levels of caffeine much higher than intended with each serving of coffee. It's worth investigating. I myself notice that cold brew seems to have much more of the effects of caffeine on me personally, so I rarely drink it. Hope this helps

The difference with coffee beans is that Arabica is generally used for most of our ground coffee and Robusta is primarily used for instant coffee powder/granules...it is harsher and stronger and cheaper so used for that,

Peets decaf is the closest I’ve found that tastes as close to regular caffeinated coffee. My husband drinks it in the afternoon. I just drink one cup in the morning of cinnamon dulce Starbucks arabica coffee or Starbucks Sumatra Arabica 100%. I use a Keurig for brewing my coffee of 8 oz. I’m prediabetic. I was told I didn’t need to check my blood glucose. I am losing weight about a pound a week from fasting and I feel so much better and sleep better thank you you Dr.!! I am 78 and reversed à T2D 5 years ago with a low carbohydrate diet and went on to lose 30kg and am stabilised ever since with a low carbohydrate diet and intermittent fasting: one meal a day or 8/16 intermittent fasting. I have no issues with my morning coffee with or without cream, but with the stevia / maltitol sweeter that gives me hunger pangs obviously by spiking insulin. My plan is to move my main OMAD to the morning and my eating window from 12:00 to 20:00 to 08:00 to 13:00 si that spikes coincide with my eating window. This is not as family friendly but bette for my health.

I drink black coffee nearly every morning after I drink a glass of water (hydration), and last time I did an impromptu blood test for glucose, it was 90 mg/dl. I did that while I have already taken my morning coffee. So, in my case, I am OK. I do IF and low carb, by the way. I've been drinking regular coffee for decades.
