Perfect example of why Layne is the best commentator on nutrition issues on KZbin. Refuses to sensationalize a headline even if it could be used to bludgeon the low carb zealots he's often taking issue with. Interesting study, but I think it's helpful as a place to talk about these confounding variables and the limits of using all cause mortality to make sweeping generalizations about nutrition. Eat your veggies, get your protein, sleep and exercise, don't smoke! Study after study confirms this advice.

What about how ingesting protein promotes igf-1 and its affects on longevity? And what about the higher amounts of methionine in animal protein? As a typical gym bro who spaces out his protein intake throughout the day and eats lots of protein as well as foods with higher methionine content overall, I would personally love a video about this topic and how such a diet would affect longevity. Thanks Dr Layne!

No. Methionine is broken down into homocysteine. You need adequate B12 and folate to break down homocysteine. This is why those with MTHFR gene mutations need to take in methylcobalamin and methyl folate because they (we) don't methylate well. That's why you have a higher risk of heart disease as a MTHFR-er.

I think another issue here is that probably at least half of those people on low carb diets didn't start the low carb diet until they were in their 30s and 40s, and were using it to address other health issues like obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. I imagine it would be hard to find enough people that led a clean low carb lifestyle from birth to death to base a study on. My dad smoked until he was in his 40s, my mom all her life, and they both died to COPD and its related issues; sometimes the damage is already done.
@KrystalessR Жыл бұрын
But it isn't simply "carbohydrates" that lead to the health issues you mentioned. You can likely find people who were eating healthy while not being low carb. Smoking is a poor example, as that is always bad... carbohydrates are not always bad. Most things we would consider "bad" are not all carbohydrate either... donuts, pizza, candy bars, etc. are all very fat heavy too. While they may contain macronutrients they aren't genuinely food, I would think this conversation would revolve mainly around macronutrients contained in healthy food.
@wallacebonner7939 Жыл бұрын
@@KrystalessR I never said carbs were bad, I just said that the people they were studying didn't spend their entire lives on a low-carb diet, so you can't really tell how such a diet would affect someone over a lifetime. The foods you listed are all heavy in saturated fats, which also leads to issues. I have also seen videos stating that eating carbs and fats together because the carbs cause fat cells to open up and more easily absorb the fat consumed, but not sure if that's just theory or backed by studies.

I think a very important metric that a lot of mortality / aging studies gloss over is quality of life at older ages. If a certain diet lowers your life expectancy by a couple of years, but then increases your ability to care for yourself at an older age compared to another diet, that would be very interesting to hear about. Sarcopenia is one of the leading causes of disease injury and death among the elderly. Optimizing things like muscle mass could offer much more benefit to a person throughout their life, even though it could shorten their lifespan.

The animals fed high carb, low protein were a bit overweight but outlived the the lean, high protein fed animals. Highly recommend the work and book „Eat like the Animals“. Question is, do we rather want to lean down with high protein / low carb and reap those be benefits, or limit protein for life extending effects? Maybe Layne can cover this, together with the Protein Leverage Hypothesis created by the same scientists / authors of the book mentioned above.

I hear what you're saying about the association found between saturated fat and mortality, however they are studies done on people increasing fat consumption on a standard American diet, which consumes a lot of carbohydrates and processed crap. On a keto or carnivore diet, saturated fat is used for fuel and does not develop atherosclerosis despite the elevated LDL because there is no oxidation of LDL particles due to hyperglycaemia or seed oils. You can see this clearly as coronary artery calcium scores are reversed on the diet and quite often equal zero. Cholesterol is the main component of arterial plaques, but it turns out it's just like plastering a wall full of holes - it's elevated blood glucose that causes the holes. Correlation does not always equal causation.

Based on videos from different ppl, it’s said that insulin spiking from carbs has a greater impact on mortality than mtor spiking, it’s why Thomas delauer did intermittent fasting. However Layne has debunked the effects of insulin spiking, as when calories are equal, the body goes through the same amount of inflammation regardless of fasting. I think Layne is big on moderation so he’d be supportive of the typical bodybuilder’s macro ratios, which is moderate like this study, about 55% carbs and 35-45% protein.

another variable, refined carbohydrates (insta insulin spikers) versus slow burn, complex natural carbohydrates (slower insulin increases), seems this study has taken carbs and put them into a catch all nametag. personally i am relatively low carb, but that's only because i don't touch refined carbs, i have plenty of fibre in my diet and will eat complex/natural carbs, i also don't smoke, rarely touch alcohol and i'm a fairly fit 50 yr old (lots of off road cycle exercise), the refined carb thing that spikes insulin is more dangerous than super low carbs, especially in people that do little exercise, all that excess sugar gets stored and over years will eventually cause diabetes through the regular spiking of insulin and resultant damage to the pancreas. subbed btw, very informative interesting video.

I would imagine there could be another simple idea that's related to the point about smoking and that's the fact that any diet that vilifies a macro tends to attract people that are concerned about their health and looking for a crash diet. Anecdotally, my mother had a scare with her A1C and thought immediately that she needs to go back on a low carb diet. I imagine this is a common story that people go on extreme diets when they reach a point in their health that motivates them to change so drastically. The smoking thing is interesting. I'm a former long-time smoker. And I gained weight. And I got curious about keto to lose the weight. And I did. But it's interesting to think that maybe smoking and weight gain correlate heavily becaus they're both, to some extent, results of poor impulse control. Or perhaps some added need for stimuli, or what have you, which is then treated with things like smoking and pleasure eating. People who try something like low carb usually do so because they have extra weight on them. So curious to see it indeed correlate so heavily with smoking.

Seems that way. He made a video about that in regard to meat consumption: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nV7Yoa2sqtx0pMk Long story short, red meat consumption was correlated with cardiovascular disease risk, but when they equated fruit and vegetable consumption that relationship pretty much disappeared. [Kind of a side note, the current consensus is that saturated fat isn’t harmful, it just doesn’t have the cardio-protective benefits that unsaturated fats do.] More broadly, the obscure health risks that get a lot of social media attention - PUFAs, food processing, BPA, oxalates, artificial sweeteners, and so forth - are either unproven or minuscule compared to the “big bricks” he mentioned.

@@RobotechII You have no idea what are you talking about. Agriculture was invented more 12 thousand years ago and humans back then and since then ate a mixed diet based on animal products, grain and fruits and vegetables, dependent on their location and availability.

Is this the same Lancet that had to retract a study on the CV-19 therapeutic that shall not be named?

I have heard plenty of bad things about lancet.

yes lol the Lancet retracted a 2020 study on hydroxychloroquine, but every journal has occasional retractions, that one just made headlines cause of the politically charged news environment. The Lancet is still a top medical journal

@@cincyreds62- In my humble opinion, data were fudged to create a fake study to push the false narrative that hydrox was dangerous, and therefore could not be used as a therapeutic/prophylactic to treat CV-19. The end result was that the vaxines were approved for emergency use and big pharma made a killing, pun intended. It's difficult for me to believe the Lancet wasn't in on this, but who knows.

If I ate 55% carbs I'd feel like 💩. People who eat more meat also tend to smoke more, drink more, exercise less, and be less health conscious overall, so there's that...

@@cincyreds62 there are plenty. Here's one of the studies "Vegetarian Dietary Patterns and Mortality in Adventist Health Study 2" Under "BASELINE CHARACTERISTICS" it states: Among the 73 308 individuals in our analytic sample, 5548 (7.6%) were vegans, 21 177 (28.9%) were lacto-ovo-vegetarians, 7194 (9.8%) were pesco-vegetarians, 4031 (5.5%) were semi-vegetarians, and 35 359 (48.2%) were nonvegetarians. Table 2 presents characteristics of the participants at baseline according to the 5 dietary patterns. Percentages and means were age-sex-race standardized as appropriate. Vegetarian groups tended to be older, more highly educated, and more likely to be married, to drink less alcohol, to smoke less, to exercise more, and to be thinner. The proportion of blacks was highest among pesco-vegetarians and lowest in lacto-ovo-vegetarians. Of postmenopausal women, far fewer vegans were receiving hormone therapy. Mean reported duration of adherence to current dietary pattern (not included in Table 2) was 21 years for vegans, 39 years for lacto-ovo-vegetarians, 19 years for pesco-vegetarians, 24 years for semi-vegetarians, and 48 years for nonvegetarians.

Hey, the study your are referencing is an association study. Not a causation study. These kinds of studies do not determine cause and effect. Cofounding factors such as steroid use, consumption of processed foods, smoking, drinking, and any number of other things could also be the cause here. Many randomized controlled studies show no significant difference between consuming plant based fats and animal based fats effect on cardiac events. Saturated fat intake though showed a reduced mortality from stroke events. The randomized controlled studies need to be conducted, and the ones that have been done do not show animal fats as being the cause of heart disease, and stroke. However there is a significant causal effect from trans fats, or hydrogenated vegetable oils that are found in almost every processed food product on American grocery store shelves, which many batter fried foods from fast food restaurants are cooked in. Even not eating anything is better than processed foods, but we know that will cause people to die faster than eating processed foods. I also posted this before I finished the video.
