Wegovy and Saxenda are GLP-1 medications that were originally developed to treat Type 2 Diabetes, which is a disease where the body struggles to manage sugar in the blood. GLP-1 medications are good at reducing sugar in the blood AND helping with weight loss. As a result, they are now approved for managing obesity without the presence of diabetes.
But what happens when people who don’t have diabetes take Wegovy or Saxenda? Are individuals who use Wegovy at risk of having hypoglycemia or their blood sugar going too low?
In case you have never hung out with someone who has diabetes this = no bueno! In a worst-case scenario, it could lead to death.
Let’s dive in.

Hi Dr. Dan, I'm not sure if you remember me but awhile ago, I reached out to let you know I was selected for a clinical trial for a GLP-1 agonist. The study was looking at dosage levels. 5 groups, one of which was a placebo control group. I started in Sept 2021 and it went to July 22. I was 59 yo when I started and weighed aprox 275lb and am 5'-4". yeah, I know, super chubby. My A1C was sitting at 5.9 at few months prior to beginning the study. Also 68 weeks before the study began I had already shifted my diet to low carb and IF. Nothing crazy on IF, just an 16:8 to 19:5 protocol. And I tried to keep my carbs south of 50g, but still had some days where I probably clocked in at 75-80g. I experienced notable weight loss from the summer of 2021 to Fall 2022. About 50lbs.through the clinical trial I was tested about every 2 weeks (blood work, body measurements, urine) and saw a clinical trial doctor once a month. I was right up there for having the better results in the Canadian participants, so the doctor and I assumed I may have been in the group with the higher dosage, despite not having symptoms from the medication. So here's the shocker.......Last month I received a call from that doctor and the results of who was in what dosage group was revealed. I was in the placebo group! He told me he was extremely surprised of my results, not only did I lose significant weight, my A1c was down to 5.2 for most of the trial. So this ALL was achieved by diet and ramping up my exercise a wee bit. No medication in the mix. Thought you'd like to know.

That is incredible! Congratulations - that is no easy feat with or without medication. All the changes you made are necessary to get your results. The medication is simply a tool to support that. Maybe the thought you were on the drug helped and maybe not. Regardless, you should be proud of how far you have come! Keep it up!

For sure 24hrs after my first shot of 7.5 Mounjaro my bs dipped really fast and I suspect pretty low I didn't have a monitor to check. I had extreme food aversion and immediately expelled the banana and juice I was trying to use to bring the sugar up. No Bueno. I eventually got a lifesaver candy that lived up to its name and kind of needed them close by for a week until I could go back to 5mg. I have extreme IR and the low sugar felt like what I'd imagine an overdose feels like, I believe my insulin issue was over corrected resulting in the issue with my sugar that week. It did stay in the low 70s most of the time. After another month on 5 I tried 7.5 again and was only feeling badly 3 of 5 days instead of 5 of 7 days like my first shot. It all works out, I kept in contact with my Dr, he recommended cheese or unsalted roasted nuts before bed to stabilize the night swings and when I increase my doses now i make sure to do that.

Thank you so much for this. I have been taking wegovy for 5 weeks and now on 0.5mg. Since increasing the dose, I have been experiencing hypoglycemia early hours of the morning. Pretty scary, dizziness, shaking, eye problems and confusion. Ive been getting up 3am to have a biscuit to feel better which seems counterproductive when on a weigh loss medication. Im not diebetic and couldnt find any info about wegovy and low blood sugars in non diabetics so this video has helped me tremendously thank you.

My GP prescribed Saxenda for weight loss and a CGM. (I am not diabetic.) The first couple of weeks my blood sugar was pretty normal, but now that I'm on 1.8 mg of Saxenda, my CGM is giving me low blood sugar warnings at least half the time - below 60 mg/dl and sometimes even below 40. It started happening mostly at night, but now it's all day, regardless of what or if I eat. I'm feeling tired most of the time. Should I be concerned or is this just a fluke with my CGM? Should I go back to a lower dose of Saxenda? I'm scheduled to increase my dose again tomorrow, but if this is causing hypoglycemia I'm worried it will get worse.

@kimberlee440 I am having exact same issue on my GLP-1 w/ CGM readings in mid-40’s mostly and highest levels mid-50’s 2-hrs after meals. Did your provider indicate this was cause for concern and make changes in your dosage? I feel fine other than the usual cold & fatigue from being on GLP-1. This is my first CGM tracking day since being on these med’s so will give it day or so before panicking. Will also try some typical glucose spiking foods to see if that helps. Before GLP-1 I was typically in the 80-120 ranges.

There drugs do lower blood pressure. Which can be mistaken for low blood sugar.

I have a question! Not sure where to ask. Can you refer me if you’ve discussed this in a previous video? Can I still lose weight on Ozempic if I reduce down from .5 to .25 or will it be ineffective? Should reduce down when coming off of it as well?
