Considering all the love out there for the series, I figured this would be a good show to give the Is It as Great as We Remember? treatment. So let's do it by going through the whole OG Ben 10 series, continuing with season 3.

My personal theory: Vilgax was initially intended to take Myaxx's role as Azmuth's assistant, but was split in two at some point during the writing process. This would explain his mysterious expertise with the watch, and his return as they'd find him in prison (later series do establish prison buildings inside the Null Void), teaming up because he can't conquer the universe if it gets destroyed.

Alien force is less of a mixed bag when compared to the original series but its also more specific in what audience its trying to appeal too, but it doesn't fully commit to its ideas more so implying them rather than showing but unlike classic it follows a structure of progression with its story and characters.

@@paulgilbert5278 i dont think i can compare the og series and alien force, theyre not very comparable imo - both have a different style i also think that alien force wouldve been much better if the whole of season 3 didnt happen as it happened. still a good show, its just that season 3 does put a bit of dirt on it if you know what i mean also, in a what-if type of a scenario, it would have been cool to see Ben keeping master control of the omnitrix after the events in the last 2 episodes of s1 and see where the show wouldve gone with that instead of what it chose to do

This is a perfect finale for the series. Not only do we get to know what the Omnitrix is for but Ben and Gwen also finally appreciate each other and have become genuine friends. I don't agree that that happened multiple times in the series, but rather that they gradually became closer as the series progressed. However, I do agree that Vilgax' return should have been explained.

Not really lazy, it does actually show up later in Alien Force (I think. Might be Ultimate Alien). Besides it doesn't really matter because if anyone would find a way out of the Null Void it would be Vilgax. We see him easily able to gain the use of the guardians so why wouldn't he find a way out of there?

Really enjoyed the original series when it aired, but like you said, there's a constant vibe of "missed potential", and most viewers love the broader premise more than the episodic plots. Alien Force tried to take the show in a cooler direction, but like a monkey's paw wish, used retcons and very jarring changes to get there. It's like going from Mass Effect 1 to 2, and I dropped it after a few episodes.

You will definitely like season 1 and 2 of alien force since as everyone keeps saying those are the episodes where the consistency you have been looking for Ben to have finally exists. But other than that theres a lot to look out for such as the main trio's dynamic and the overall plot of alien force. 04:46 I just noticed another problem. When Wildmutt saves Gwen from an open airlock, I can probably get behind Wildmutt being able to breathe since he's an alien but Gwen should have died since she was not wearing an astronaut suit.

The air in the ship wasn't completely gone so she could still breathe for a little while. The real danger would be if she held her breath while the air pressure was decreasing otherwise her lungs would've exploded

I don't think this franchise is going to be the emotional, character-driven narrative you might wish it was. It feels like you're slightly mistaken about the type of show Ben 10 is. That is something you should probably consider before deciding if you want to do Alien Force, because that show isn't TOO different from what I remember. Might be a little closer to what you like though, at certain points.

@Edgar Barrett zuko is that villain in the beginning and is absolutely amazing, the fire king never over stays his welcome so his simplicity is ok and still has good lore behind him, and the other villains have clear backgrounds that established their motivations making them convincing villains you don't have to connect with them that's not always the point but they are well written villains

This is why I'm actually really really excited of the idea of a ben 10 series on streaming services. That lack of commitment comes from a time where networks were still hesitant to do plot heavy episodes because "what if kids miss an episode". This even affected otherwise legendary shows like avatar and Samurai Jack. Now with people used to having an entire season to binge, writers would be able to have more stuff like Alien Force without that restriction,.

Honestly it sounds like being an episodic show in a time when people could binge watch did classic Ben 10 a favor. Kids wouldn't be able to see entire seasons so they likely wouldn't remember Ben re-learning lessons so it wouldn't seem repetitive to them and because this is episodic, they likely wouldn't care about some of the characters or villains not having much to them because they are villains of the week, they're just there for that episode. From the sounds of these reviews, it seems like classic Ben 10 doesn't stand the test of time because now we can easily watch every episode so we can see Ben learning the same lessons over and over and we can see him acting like an unlikable asshole multiple times in a row. When you're just catching this show every now and then, you wouldn't notice this likely enough but watching an episode one after another you have Ben wanting to steal shit, being a dick to his family, being incredibly egotistical and not listening to anyone and this could span whole seasons, its gives a different perspective on Ben then just seeing him every now and then. Honestly I could see myself having these same issues, I remember one episode from Alien Force I believe that I won't spoil here but I remember part of the conflict happening because a character wasn't interested in something and I was just sitting there thinking "YES YOU ARE INTO THAT! Did you only get captured because the writers made you forget you liked this thing and made you leave!?". I forget the specifics of that episode, but I just felt it was forced because I didn't think the character that left would have left, I remembered something about this character in a previous episode and it didn't line up with how he was acting now. While I wouldn't expect complex villains or stuff like that in this as this was appealing to a younger audience, not everything is going to be Avatar of course but I can still understand the frustration of a character never seeming to change. If each episode is going to have morals, it should at least stick to those morals as otherwise it just makes each episode pointless. What was the point of Ben learning that Grandpa and Gwen could help him if he's just going to treat them like shit in the next episode? And while its not an ongoing plot, there is still some continuity as he did meet villains like Vilgax and Zombozo so there is progression of time, meaning there are in canon, multiple times Ben has been a dick to his family, learned his lesson and then went back to being a dick which just makes him seem rather unlikable. This isn't the same episodic formula a say Spongebob where events of an episode will not matter in the next no matter what, the episodes do often matter to following episodes so that means there is enough continuity that Ben is actually just forgetting not to be a dickhead after learning not to. I liked this show as a kid, but as a kid I'd just see episodes every now and then, I think even as a kid I'd still be a bit annoyed seeing Ben continue to be a little twerp after learning not to be. I forget which age I was with the Alien Force episode but that annoyed me too and I know I was still in school by that time. The show doesn't have to been this grand epoch but if its going to have lessons, have those lessons stick. My Little Pony could do this as far as I recall and that was aimed at a much younger audience, I don't see why Ben 10 couldn't. Maybe I should rewatch this show myself so I have my own perspective but yeah, it doesn't seem as great as I remembered, I think it got by from the limitations of the past and now that we can see the full series in its entirety from start to finish, it apparently retreads a lot of ideas and the characters don't seem to change so we just get the same episode where the character learns the same lessons...or sometimes don't so it seems like you might as well just watch your favorite episodes and skip your least favorites which seems like a bad thing for a show. I could of course be wrong but I was surprised by these reviews and it just made me find 10 year old Ben unlikable and made me imagine I'd have similar issues if I binged the series myself.

In all of the episodes seasons 1-4 and the special movies of the Classic Ben 10, Ben Tennison is always one consistent fresh presence as a heroic character with interesting character development arc for his growth regarding him learning from his mistakes by becoming a better person as a whole. And also not to mention that he is very complex and relatable teenage boy that we can relate to him regarding his flaws being expanded to his character being interesting in some sort of way.

I thank you for making this series as it had me revisiting a franchise of shows that I barely, barely remember watching when I was about 5, Ultimate Alien's intro and a few of the aliens themselves where the only things I remembered. And while the origonal show and the third of Omniverse I have watched wasn't really my thing, I loved Alien Force and Ultimate Alien and I'm so glad you bought this series to my attention because while possibly a bit overhyped from the comments on the previous videos in this series, those shows still are really good and a part of me misses them already, though that's probably just my boredom speaking. Defiantly two shows that I would love to forget and re-watch again with no memories of them.

I still have no idea why Myaxx isn't Vilgax's sister. Vilgax should've wanted the watch because he was slighted and didn't get an opportunity to assist making the watch for whatever dangerous reason. Vilgax in that context would also be highly intelligent, a Chekhov's Gun setting up this twist could've been seeing Vilgax creating an escape in a scientific way (the 10 minutes said to be wasted would do nicely here), something that also would take the inconsistency problem away.

I remember the first time I saw Secret of the Omnitrix on TV: I got the Eye-Guy version, which I think was the first time I actually saw Eye-Guy. I remember watching a lot of episodes out of order as a kid, but because of the lack of strict continuity, I didn’t even realize it. I actually that the last episode of Season 4 (where summer is over and he’s back at school) was the real finale of the show.

I wonder what his opinion on DBZ would be. Or a show that's similar to Ben 10, kind of, that being Xiaolin Showdown. Xiaolin Showdown was another early 2000s anime inspired comedy action cartoon, with continuity and a lot of stakes, but for the most part it doesn't take itself too seriously, and focuses more on the jokes than on the ongoing plots. Of the 4 main characters only one of them goes through an actual story arc and character development that lasts (Raimundo), while the other 3 learn a lesson every now and then for an episode only to forget it by the next one. All 3 of them are pretty one domensional and stereotypical, but similar to Ben 10 the show doesn't take itself that seriously. As a kid I thought Xiaolin and Ben 10 are a bit similar with them both having action in it, child portagonists, some continuity but not too much, and a lot of comedy. Doesn't help that Cartoon Network in my country aired them back to back late at nights right after Juniper Lee and before Teen Titans (those shows also being similar to Xiaolin and Ben 10 to me).

Continuity is great when it happens but I concur. However I can see why he was expecting greater than what he got, looking at his other recent reviews on western media he did Spectacular Spider-Man, Young Justice, & BTAS (80s). So in a way Ben 10 is his second Cartoon Network show he’s reviewed but the first original cartoon from the network not connected from an original source material like a comic book, like Teen Titans.

All I remember was that the original show was somewhat a mixed bag that can't quite change the character as it was designed to be watched in any order. Whereas alien force was more a start to finish show that had a lot of character growth but at one stage they basically just reverted his character after they figured it be easier to go back to the "watch in any order" style.

While I understand why you expected the show to do more from season one, doesn’t mean that’s what Cartoon Network wanted going forward. Cartoons being syndicated than episodic was rare if not forbidden, even Teen Titans struggled with having its arks due to the fact that the prime audience are children. That doesn’t mean kids can’t follow overarching narratives in their cartoons but back in the 2000s & mid 2000s? Where all you had was syndication and whatever was on for the day was what you got? Yeah Cartoon Network and other channels would rather avoid story focused cartoons in favor of episodic, accessible programming with basic moral lessons. The show runners did their job and so did Cartoon Network, at the end of the day they mad a cartoon series that went further than many other cartoons of their time.

Alien Force is great, until Season 3. The Network basically forced Ben 10, a 16 year old, back into being a snobbish 10 year-old cry baby. Also they bring back Ghost Freak (don't know his other name), Vilgax and some other OG villains, making weird changes to all of them for no reason.

@@dulow1047 I agree. One of UAF's main issues was its power inconsistencies. Ben had an out by having 60+ different forms to choose from so his alien's power fluctuations were hidden better. Gwen didn't have that luxury and to make matters worse her powerset was homogenized to be "energy shield" or "energy ball" 99% of the time. And on top of all that the shields would only be as effective as the plot needed them to be, so you have instances of them failing to block something when they blocked something stronger last episode. As time went on Gwen's constructs seemed to get weaker and simpler in appearance. I don't take issue with Anodites personally as I really like their UAF designs and the lore they helped create but I agree with the accusations of Gwen being reduced to "Pink Lantern" a lot of the time. Even if they limited Gwen to only making constructs, the UAF writers could've been a lot more creative with it.

Allows her to be an anodite while still keeping all the magic stuff canon.

I loved the og series for the aliens but i dropped the series twice already by Season 3, the repeated themes, Ben being Ben, and the alien lore could've been executed a lot better like Avatar The Last Airbender dealt with Loss, Genocide, Murder, Child Abuse, etc. bunch of crazy stuff but it had a similar light hearted tone like Ben 10 at times. Some Episodes slay, like Kevin & Ben being on in that Gladiator situation, but overall it wasn't for me. Still like the Omnitrix design, the aliens and Vilgax.

At least for Ben Tennison in The Ben 10 Classic his character arc is well written and developed as a fleshed out protagonist in the special movie "Secrets Of The Omnitrix" showing more layers to his character and being more understandable to work with Tetrax Gwen & Mayax to find the creator of the omnitrix Azimuth and also showing some deepness into his personality like feeling the sandness, the grief and the pain of him losing Gwen and there is a lot more than for him that everybody would expected it as he definately grows into his own character in a much better way.

Personally as a huge Ben 10 fan I think of season 3 as his cocky season, he’s gotten good at using the omnitrix and he’s learnt plenty of lessons but he gets cocky and takes max and Gwen for granted, season 3 is still the worst season because it kinda neglects past seasons lessons but this mentality makes it less mediocre, it is still disappointing though, the only Ben 10 classic season that is not at least pretty good(in my opinion)

But then season 3 they went back to like season 3 of the original series where Ben is a jerk again because they wanted more ratings and early alien forces numbers were lower than the OG series.

To be fair I feel like Alien Force fail to understand what Ben 10 was, much like our KZbinr friend here. Show was meant to be like Ed edd N eddy or Powerpuff Girls where you don't need to watch every episode and you got the gist of it. Back when I watched Ben 10 I remember it being the palate Cleanser between Young Justice and Teen Titans or shows like them. I've never see more than like one or two episodes of Ben 10 a day. I definitely don't think Alien Force Seasons 1-2 is gonna be the saving grace for you. Alien Force had it's own problems and inconsistencies both within itself and as a continuation of the original series. The big problem with the comment section is that it's populated by fans of Ben 10 who love the series and overlook how it might appeal to someone who isn't sold on the premise in the same way. There was never a Ben 10 show or movie that was great all the way through. The series remains high in demand so maybe one day someone will take those great episodes peppered throughout all of these shows and make something that's consistently high in quality... But until then I think great episodes surrounded by mediocre ones is all you'll find, regardless of what you watch.

Even though the show emphasises continuity more than it's predecessor, this doesn't change the fact that DNAliens are just warm bodies for the heroes to beat up. It straight up fails to deliver on what it promised. I have a soft spot for Ben 10 as a nostalgic series but there are better superhero shows.

While I disagree with a lot of your points throught the whole show, it's nice to hear what other people don't like about the franchise. At the end of the day it's not everyones' cup of tea, and while I don't mind things like the character inconsistencies (well depending on the episode), simpler villains like Vilgax or non plot action scenes, I also see where you're coming from. It was a different view I haven't scene on the topics of it and while I am not bothered as much as you are on several topics it is nice to see your thoughts on the show especially on Vilgax which makes me think you may prefer a version of him later but I am unsure about that tbh. It’s an old cartoon of the X-men that came out in 2003, and I really think it would be a series you enjoy just because of how it handles its characters. So he doesn't know that this movie is also 3 episodes of the show, and the 3 parts kinda needed to have it's own structure to work apart from each other but also work as a whole ass move. I mean, I get when he asks why we need this thing again, but you can't focus all the action scenes to just one part or exposition to just one part, it's compromising but would the average person really have problems with a prison break, a spaceship chase and a battlefield scene as the main action scenes on each part? Overall I am really biased towards Ben 10, since the beginning i knew this wasn't gonna be the thing he expected it to be, and the parts about missing potential yeah, he's right about it, and I'm not gonna be personally insulted bc we don't share an opinion on a silly cartoon, it's just that having episodic conflicts and characters that maybe won't appear again, villains that you don't always connect with on a personal level and a status quo of how you characters should act are not things that he enjoys, so I guess he should stay away from Scooby Doo or pretty much the DC animated series, the thing here is that I really don't think that every show has to have the things he expected, even if an structure like that was kinda on the first season. Do every season of the show needed a Vilgax? Do every animated show need to be Avatar? Are action sequences bad as the main focus on a show? I say no but maybe you don't agree and it's fine I'd say that this aproach on the overall series is what makes me revisit the show so much, bc I don't need to binge watch everything, and this was the time period of all the franchise where the world building really extended anywhere it wanted and not limit itself to just aliens as the explanation for everything or a 2nd gimmick to just sell toys or having so much lore yo start retconing stuff you make a mess. This is a perspective matter so at the end of the day Ben 10 definitely is not everyone's cup of tea.

I was talking more about the series inside the "DC animated universe", bc Young Justice is a serialized series. Ben 10 doesn't compromise to major changes bc that's not the point of the show, you have this character here and this one here and that one there, here's their personalities, now put them on a whacky shenanigan, if a non main character is popular enough or if you can make a nod to another episode bring it back. This show was a Saturday cartoon, it's DVDs just had like 3 episodes each and that's why alien force exists as it is. Just watch Adventure Time or Regular show, they started like this and eventually became serialized, maybe 4 seasons of this show are a little too much to be sustainable (just see what shows like family guy have become), I really think that the only completely consistent thing on the show where ir matters the order of the episodes are the aliens, outside of that the episodes were usually made to grab the attention of kids that potentially could be watching the show for the first time, as it was for almost every cartoon back then. Maybe yeah, I'm being more prejudicial than I thought at first, it's just as I said, not everyone's cup of tea, if someone watches this show as a lot of missed potential and lack of compromise it's a valid point of view.

If not, I really recommend it, just one season with a closed story that comes full circle, it's about detectives, serial killers and psychology, imo it has a very intelligent story that you're gonna find very interesting, with Freud psychology references and all!

Knowing his problems with the original show, he is going to hate season 3 of Alien Force. As well as Ultimate Alien and Omniverse (if gets there) probably too.

He will like some of the Ultimate Alien. And hate some of it. It's a mixed bag but i really like the episodes i like.

@@keremmazman3761 I meant in terms of Ben’s character development. In season 3 of AF he reverts to being an asshole and doesn’t change from that point on.
