As a fan of dungeon sim player I would like to share games that I know are very DK-like: - Dwelvers - it's a mix of Dungeon Keeper, The Settlers and Minecraft. It's the only game where you can dig multiple layers of terrain and there are many different resources used for different production chains, instead of using just mana and gold. It also has the surface world where you can interact with humans and beat them. It was recently released after 10 years of development mostly by ONE guy lol. It doesn't have up-to-date graphics and music, but it has immense possibilities, especially that you can generate maps from a seed like in Minecraft or use the map editor to make your own. I rate it 10/10; - War for the Overworld - made by big fans of DK, it's the closest to DK if it comes to gameplay and general setting. It also has its own mechanics like rituals and game modes like tower defense. Developers put much attention to creatures to make them original and fun. WftO doesn't offer the human world and it's only currency is gold and mana, however they are constantly used in almost everything, which means you still need to be careful with spending them. It has really nice graphics and fun campaign, as well as it has the map editor with scripts. I rate it 9/10; - Dungeons - it's mostly a story-driven DK-like game where you manage your dungeon, but also raid the overworld and switch to a more typical RTS game there. It recently got the 4th installment, about a month earlier than Dwelvers. I rate it 8/10; - Lords of Nether - it's currently in early access early alpha stage, but it's graphics and what they have already released shows that it will be close to what DK and WftO offers, however there you will also be able to play on the surface as a human.

Fans may also want to check out A Game of Dwarves. I don't think it had great reviews at the time, but I had a blast. It was very much "Dungeon Keeper with Z-levels." It's an old game, but worth a look for fans of the genre.

War for the Overworld is more of a sequel to DK2 than DK1. I really want to see a game like DK1 - the dark atmosphere, the mechanics (the physics), the map design are just way better than anything I have seen since

I notice that a lot. When people compare games to Dk, they're really just talking about DK2. I want a game like DK1, but there's really nothing like it. I'd say that the closest might be War for the Overworld. Even then, that game is still pretty cartoony.

Speed bug? When you train the imps they get a speed buff along with a teleporting abiletie in dungeon keeper 1/2.

At level 10 speed and armour spells bug out for all creatures so level 9 creatures are stronger. This is fixed in DK FX

Shame I've known all of these but a well-put-together list regardless of that fact. I started playing these games with the sequel and never found a game that quite matched that experience... of course that has to do with the fact I was probably way too young to play it and it left a greater impression on me that way but still...EA can rot in the deepest, darkest dungeon for what they did to this series (and many others).

Yes I agree hence why I put Keeper FX atop the list as it really has enhanced that original feel and vibe for me. Still nothing compares to coming across this game for the first time and just being blown away by the humour, vibe and gameplay. - Tom

Hah what the hell, until this video i always though prison architect and rimworld were the same game. Yes, despite being named differently...i dunno, they look identical to me. Also i can't believe Dungeons managed to pull it off. The first one was such a confused mess, it had no idea what it wanted to be. Glad the sequels finally found the key to the gameplay.
