Did you know there are more Americans of German ancestry, than from any other nation? It's true. About 100 Million Americans have German ancestry (and I am one of them). Our population is fast declining though because of (and compared to) Latino/Hispanic [Mexican and Central American primarily], illegal immigration and so-called "anchor babies" over the last 50 or 60 years.

Everyone is being snarky but here are the tips, and what I do, distilled down. 1. Leave the aluminum top on. 2. Take of the plastic top, put the top someplace handy. 3. Put it into the plunger tube with aluminum still on. 4. Once in the plunger tube take the aluminum off. Put it on the plastic top, it will adhere 5. Don't screw the tube all the way down. This allows air to escape. Prime it. 6. Screw it all the way down. East Coaster here.

Hey, Wrangler, I got a greasing tip for you (works best with an air grease gun). If you ever have a zerk that hasn't been greased in years and is packed with dirt and just won't budge, take the tube off of your grease gun and fill it up with brake cleaner, then pump it into the grease fitting until you are afraid the fluid is about to diesel (LOL) and it will clear out that grease zinc and break up all the nasty old grease in the part. My dad taught me the trick and he didn't get the reputation of 'the zerk whisperer' for nothing.

@@brianpatterson7428 when the grease is cold it's even harder to pull back when it's attached to the gun. I don't think people really stopped to think about what they're doing so they keep doing it the same way all the time. Back when slick 50 was available through independent distributors I introduced my dad to it and he balked at it but we put 2 quarts of Slick 50 in the main engine on the boat by the time he got to Southeast Alaska, when you started the main engine she'd hunt about three times and settled down. The other thing if you were in the engine room and hit the starter button the lights were dim before they would go out from the high amp draw.

The lube shuttle i used used lube that came in a soft ribbed plastic bottle. The design was like the old one with that spring but you also screwed in the lube bottle, sort of like a mix between the two. As you used the lube shuttle the bottle would scrunch up. I managed to find the brand from a search, the bottles are called OilKey GT-500XT Also the place i worked on installed extra equipment on diggers, excavator and such, one of the thing everyone wanted was a centralised automatic lubing system. It may be a little bit overkill on a tractor that you don't use as much but it's fairly simple to install yourself. Just got to make sure that the tubing is long enough to not snap of with the machine articulating and put some friction protection on. The tubing even came pre-lubed!

Cody, that was pantomime :-) I have a MacNaught grease gun, looking just like yours. Before greasing any of the tractors or the Landcruiser I have some cloth to hand (why on earth would you use your trousers!). Removing the old cartridge is simple and easy, it falls out. You do not have to "remember" which way the new cartridge inserts, a quick look shows the wrong way is impossible. A plastic cap on Castrol cartridges (no ring pull) is super easy to remove with no mess. Priming the gun is quick and easy by pressing in the air valve. No mess, no waste. And the MacNaught lasts forever (and spare seals etc are easily obtained if ever needed).

Anyone who has several pieces of heavy equipment should invest in a battery powered grease gun. Also, start buying your grease by the 5 gallon (or larger) buckets/barrels. They make a special grease gun filler pump that you can then refill any grease gun with a zerk fitting (most have a plug for a zerk). Also, BG Products makes a pump like what I just described for Lube Shuttle cartridges. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6TQZKukm7iKjrM

I appreciate the east coast sissy jokes. I have had friends in the building trades from both coasts, and the differences between the way things are done, East and West, are VERY different! The humor and reparte' is age old and ever present, and highly amusing. However using the "master race" meme is close to the same as cracking dead baby jokes outside an abortion clinic. Just not funny. There are other humorous ways of referring to the German mechanical quality culture, which is truly a thing of beauty and excellence. You can do better than "master race", Cody.

@@josephmccarthy8556 listen to yourself. Have you ever read any history? Half a million Americans lost their lives stopping the "master race" bullshit that cost 30 million civilian crimes against humanity. You display a case of complete historical ignorance. For the record, my ancestors got out of Germany a century before it was even called Germany, in 1710. Ten generations later, the mechanical talent still runs true in this family. It is not biological; it is cultural more than anything else. "Master race" had nothing to do with the little town in the Palitinate where my ancestors came from. They left, along with 30,000 other refugees, because they suddenly had an escape. The previous 200 years of Protestant Reformation wars had killed 18 million Europeans -- more than the Bubonic Plague had. Maybe I should be cracking jokes about dead anabaptist martyrs?

to check the level of the grease gun, pull the rod out when the gun is primed and it will show you how much grease you have. if you leave it extended while you use the grease gun, it will suck in on its own and you can always see the level.

Put the new tube in the gun body before you pull the pop top so if grease comes out it's in the gun and you have a better Handel on the tube

,,, Wrangmeister, do it the old way, another ten years, you'll figure it out. When you screw the old one back together leave it a turn or so loose, till the spring loads and pushes the air out, then finish tightening it .

There's a way to never have to change the cartridge again. Some of the better grease guns have a zerk on the top that allow you to fill them off a 5 gallon air pump grease bucket. If you run out, you just pump more into your gun from the bucket. We used them all the time in industrial maintenance greasing presses. Just make sure you standardize your greases to ensure they have the same base and are compatible.

You can check the grease level by puling the plunger back until you start to feel resistance and checking the length of pulled rod, the more you pull out the plunger the more grease you have.

There is an air bleed off located on the top of the grease gun. Use it first and you won't be wasting any grease. Plus yes you can tell how much is left in the grease gun. Pull the handle out it will show how much is left. I'm sure you can figure that out Cody. Oh were you offended by that, Im sorry.
