The difference with television today is the sterility. There was a laid back, off the cuff feeling of television then. Around the 1990s, it all became so very obviously commercial. Of course it always was, but today it’s pushed down everyone’s throats. Think of David Letterman, he was constantly at odds with NBC and his antics. Today, he’d be canned in a heartbeat, as he pretty much was, come 1992.

The earliest television, and I think Lucy still holds up pretty well, but then again, I'm biased. I watched "I Love Lucy" in the early seventies, when I was a teenager, stuff that was made 20 years earlier. I watch it today through those same eyes and still think it's great. It made me tear up a bit when Johnny asked if she'd be remembered in 50 years. I still remember you, Lucy! I refuse to use past tense: you are a brilliant comedic actor. No small thanks to the great Vivian Vance! Love you, Lucy! And you too, Johnny!
