I've said it before: Big E's actions make the most sense in the context of someone completely blindsided by events and madly scrambling to keep up. He was content to let things sort themselves up until he suddenly exploded into a frenzy of activity, conquering Earth with troops he obviously threw together from spare parts at the last minute. If it'd been his plan to launch the unification wars when he did, wouldn't he have prepared far better? My guess is that something about the Fall of the Eldar fundamentally changed all the calculations he'd been relying on. If he made a pact with the Dark Gods at Molech...it would only have been _three_ of them, wouldn't it? Slaanesh was still dormant at the time and _would not be bound by whatever agreement Emps had made._ I suspect the pact was one of mutual non-interference. Big E agreed to leave the Ruinous Powers to play their games unbothered in return for them not interfering directly in the development of humanity. But Slaanesh wasn't bound by it. To fight off the influence of Slaanesh, the Emperor had to break the pact with the other three. And that meant everything he'd tried to avoid was back on the table.
@deantimson5643 Жыл бұрын
This sounds so plausible. Love it.
@Mistheart101 Жыл бұрын
Shiiit, that's a good point. Emps made the pact during the Dark Age of Technology, and the birth of Slaanesh was a few thousand years later. Honestly I may end up incorporating this into my own thoughts on why he seemed to be in such a rush. Fuck, dude, that's smart.

@WildWolfGod Жыл бұрын
I love the theory and I'd kind of like that idea but sadly the Lore counters it. The birth of Slaanesh is interesting in regard to time. Essentially, instead of it being a fixed point in the timeline that means the Gods exist from that point onward think of it as a drop on the timeline that extends/ripples forward and backward and touches everything, past present and future. Slaanesh was created by the Eldar at some point which means Slaanesh has always been one of the Chaos Gods regardless of the point you access it at.

Puts average marines at about 8ft tall and average primarchs at around 12ft. That's absolutely massive on both counts. That data was probably supposed to be send back to the Men of Gold but with the collapse that became impossible. So then the Votann would be stuck with their current issue, programmed to collect and store data, unable to delete anything, but nobody to send it to anymore to clear up space. Something you didn't consider and is maybe food for thought: another reason why the emperor was so urgent (bordering on sloppy) in carrying out the great crusade could be because he feared the rise of another human empire to rival his own, so he wanted to be first out of the gate and become dominant in the galaxy before any other human empires could pop up and become too big and powerful for the burgeoning Imperium to deal with

I kind of agree, but for some reason Big E can’t see the entire path leading up to the goal. He can see the end point, maybe…. But can’t exactly see how to get there completely. So maybe that explains all the missteps. Or the visions he sees are a product of his own mind and abilities. Maybe they aren’t actually real. Or it just became too much for one man, and he legitimately lost his humanity and mind somewhere even though he started out with good intentions. The path too hell is paved with them. I seem to remember Guilliman talking with one of Cawl’s underlings about the emperor. He asked if it is even possible to bring back the emperor, and the guy basically said “Gods are a blight on existence, and that counts whether or not they call themselves gods or not.. The man who sat on the throne.. probably will not be the one who gets up off it.. He will likely be incredibly powerful now. He may or may not have good intentions.. and as that old terra saying goes.. the road to bad places are paved with good intentions.” He also confirmed that they may have the ability to get the emperor back, but do they want to..

I'm sure we've all imagined an interaction with someone down to absurd detail at least once. I can only imagine someone like The Emperor would have that problem to an absurd degree. It could easily be hard to tell if something he saw was actually going to happen, or if he was just worried it could happen, or hoping it would happen, and so was making it up in his head. He just needs to ensure the survival of what, like, 20,000? A breeding population? His plan, at it's bare bones and disregarding how much he knew and whatnot, is pretty straightforward. 1) there are things that are not Humans; 2) these things pose a potential threat to Humans; 3) I need to produce a force that can eliminate these things; and 4) the cost in Human lives to accomplish my goal is immaterial if it, ultimately, succeeds. That is why I still think He was the one who actually called the Tyranids into the Galaxy to wipe all other life out while he brought enough of Humanity into the Webway to eliminate any other factions and slam the door behind Him. @wanderhillen2435 Жыл бұрын
@@aslysa2277 I don't think it is at all certain that a robot could not be a psyker in 40k. For example, psi-titans, Geller fields and the astronomicon are machines that, though they still need humans to control/power them, clearly interact with psychic power. So clearly machines can do psyker stuff, it's not a flesh-only thing. This is also evident in Chaos being able to corrupt machines (and their machine spirits) without any organic parts. You do seem to need a "soul" to power psyker powers (which is why the Tau and Necrons don't have any psykers for example), but a true intelligent AI is already halfway there. It's not all that far-fetched that Golden Age humanity at the height of their power would have managed to make an AI with a "perfect" synthetic soul, one strong enough to be the most powerful psyker ever seen. This would explain several things, like why the Emperor is so much stronger than anything else in the setting, why he is so subtly disturbing to people close enough to him and why he has such ruthless disregard for human lives (being an artificial superweapon has to be rather alienating).
@alganhar1 Жыл бұрын
@@wanderhillen2435 How does a truly intelligent AI have more of a soul than Tau or Necrons? Both are themselves true sapients, so its obvious that Intelligence on its own is not indicative of the kind of soul that registers to the beings of Chaos. If that were the case there would be Tau and Necron Psykers. So given that it is obvious that intelligence alone is not what determines the strength of the soul in the 40K universe, it logically has to be something else. You know I think some of the feedback you get about your "Emperor-bothering" may have a lot to do with fan and writer eras. At some point after too many of the original creators of 40k were gone the origin and inspiration of so many of these ideas went along with them. It's entirely possible what was to be no longer will be and that fact alone really adds to Lutein's take on how to view the 40k landscape. They are fragments, ideas, and seldom is the truth as solid as we might wish it were. 40k started in an era where 2000 AD and British Comics were at a real zenith. Alan Moore comes out of this era as more famous over here in the US. At the same time, Clive Barker is called the "future of horror" by Stephen King and his concepts in the Hellbound Heart/Hellraiser are resonating in the horror sphere. Horror itself is becoming more experimental as box office success isn't as necessary thanks to the VHS. At this same point in time Reagan and Thatcher were giving us reasons to think about the dangers of religion and the "only I can fix it" mentality of authoritarianism. Thrash is hitting a stride outside of the mainstream of glam metal, industrial and experimental electronica are on the rise (and rap here in the US) turning anti-authoritarian thought into pure emotion. Some see Star Wars as having a large influence on 40k, but I'd argue not as much as it's frequently stated. Warhammer 40k isn't as derivative of Star Wars as it very much is DUNE. Star Wars, while throwing out some cool ideas scooped up by Warhammer, isn't based in Herbert's kind of science-fiction as it is Tokein, Flash Gordon, and American comics of the late 60s through 70s. That is to say, Star Wars was as able as any science fiction could be at the time in escaping Herbert's influence (Fantasy and Tolkein are parallels to this). Now the reason I mention Dune specifically and want to distance 40k and Star Wars will be evident for the younger among you. I'm not a fan of Herbert's writing personally, but there were interesting ideas in his works and a lot of them influence 40k in a bold and underlined sort of way. If you've read any Dune and you DON'T want to question what the Emperor might be up to you truly haven't considered all the options. Or perhaps because of your own era of sci fi and entertainment you lack some of the context. There's much to enjoy exploring entire eras around the creation of a thing where it's influences can be laid bare. They can inspire some wonderful thought. Let me throw out a couple quasi-B movies from the same era people might get a kick out of: Lifeforce and Split-Second. American-British projects with some similar sci-fi meets sinister magic vibes. The same sort of sandbox the 40k crew was playing around in. Mind the R rating though, kids, especially an 80s R rating. I watched both of these recently as I was refamiliarizing myself with this specific era of influences a bit. Why write all this here? I like writing and sharing, though length of it is surely inspired by enjoying a thinking journey or two with Lutein.

When you said , “ some believe that the emperors soul left his husk long ago, leaving only enough to convert psykers into enough power to keep the lights on in the astronomicon and keep the webway door shut” this had me thinking on that idea, which is entirely plausible and I think, could be a great narrative tool going forward if they ever wanted to bring Him back. The star child, materializes into either the materium directly from the maledictum, or directly on terra after the golden throne fails and enters through the web way, and is encountered by someone from the imperium, and some sort of miscommunication occurs, people are killed and it’s relayed back that some new threat has appeared and that he is headed toward terra. Eventually he reaches terra and when all believe hope is lost when it trashes the golden throne, we pan toward a ship in the warp on an navigator, and by some astonishment the astronomicon is still on. instead of the astronomicon going dark, it isn’t, but somehow the corpse of the emperor fused with the soul begins growing back skin muscle etc and becomes whole.

I really doubt GW has the courage to remove the Emperor of Mankind but this video makes this option really interesting
@Gxbvy Жыл бұрын
after those 5 long episodes, my idea is that the emperor behaved this way simply because if he acted to fix all problems , he'd catch the full attention of all of the 4 chaos gods. Instead he purposely left space for them to take something from him in the best possible way. The emperor has to work in a precise way to slowly proceed towards ultimate victory but at the same time avoid being too close to completely win or lose. This also explains why the Primarks have been gone for so long: he was gathering power to be able to lead them. This long journey toward ultimate victory, however, has come to the price of countless lives in 10k+ years. The only way to truly fool a chaos god in my opinion is to give them exactly what they want... unfortunately. But this is also their greatest weakness: they can be baited into doing predictable stuff. Maybe the emperor didn't expect Horus to turn, but mortarion? Angron? perturabo?
@Ewil.Bluetooth Жыл бұрын
It is truly idiotic writing if the Emperor didn't willingly try to piss off Angron. Helping his battle brothers would have been so easy and not cost a thing compared to the love of his demigod son. Imo it's pretty clear that BL and GW has already decided that the Emperor isn't good but only out to further his own selfish goals.

At one point (after reading the Dune series), I had thought that the Emperor had seen a perfect version of Humanity's future. A "Golden Path" if you will. And this is that path. Mistakes, errors, sacrifices, horrendous occurrences, etc. All of it. A piece of the puzzle. Or, it's the golden path gone Grim Dark. Due to forces just as powerful being an active part of the set up of such a path.

My favorite civilizations from 40k to think about are the Interex and the Technocracy, as they seem to be these small glimpses into what humanity was like in the Age of Technology, but without the rabid Imperialism. I'd love to see a society like theirs appear again in the story of M41.
@Peter-vf3dl Жыл бұрын
In fictional storytelling, only in few occasions the average (humanoid :D ) reader leans towards the "enemy side". Unintentionally in Henlein's "Star ship troopers", intentionally in Verhoeven's adaption and probably intentionally in the 40k universe. I think, GW made other human socities more relatable in order to increase the tragic backdrop of what could have been. Altough in many instances satirically excessive, the mind set of the Imperium of Men or at least glimpses can (and could) be observed throughout our history until today. Another YT-creator made a funny "What if" scenario about the intrusion of the Forerunners into Imperial Space. Their obliteration of the Imperium and all its bigotery would be indeed so glorious, deserved and truly delightful.

@@LordIceify Nothing the Imperium has, either in 30k or 40k, can be described as "logical based bigotry". It is the extreme bigotry that actively hinders a society and stagnates it while proclaiming itself as powerful. And the Forerunners are so hilariously superior to the Imperium that its laughable; they are beings that are more comparable to the Aeldari Empire at its height.

Fantastic video, well worth the wait. After a bunch of your videos and making my way through the Horus Heresy novels, I've begun to wonder if The Emperor fought so hard against religion, in part, because he foresaw himself, a hardcore athiest, being worshipped as a god in the future. I'm often reminded of Faust, or any old school tragic hero, when it comes to the actions of The Emperor. He is the most powerful and intelligent, but he's telling the truth when he says he's human which makes him as fallible as any of us. His arrogance becomes everyone's undoing and, to me, that arrogance is part of what fuels his need to fight becoming a god; because gods are inherently right so people never question them. The Emperor though, he wants to be *technically* right. He wants you to follow him because he is the best of humanity and his logic is superior, not because he's a divine figure you follow blindly. He needs you to know how much work he put into making the Imperium and how badly humanity needs its best and brightest to take the reigns. He needs us to appreciate him for his deeds and his merit and be grateful that he chose to intervene. It's narratively perfect how badly he needs everyone to believe in him but NOT worship him as a god.

@@DrFluffy the difference is that "wrong think" in the Imperium has real consequences. It makes a massive amount of difference that you can orgy your way into a planet side demon invasion. 1984 is what the real world is right now. 40K has literal demons and chaos Gods. It is fairly important that those who worship the gods are crushed violently. Let's not forget Genestealer cults. The Imperium functions in the best way possible in such a future, given the history and setting.
