Luffy had the fallout with Usopp (simplification incoming) because he valued the crew's safety over the Merry, not because he valued his dream over his crew. He already knew that it was his responsibility as a Captain to let the crew sail safely

"just because he doesn't act different, doesn't mean he hasn't changed" THANK YOU for saying this- I think its something people who watch a lot of shows often forget. This kind of character development is much more realistic, after all our brains work in different ways, and that is part of what defines who we are, how we go through life and how we act on a daily basis. Its easy to think a character hasn't changed if they act the same, but its probably not possible for a life event to change the wiring of your brain entirely. When people mature in real life it doesn't always affect how they act outwardly, but usually it changes the decisions they make. This has happened with Luffy, and I honestly think its MORE impressive that Oda can write a subtler, more realistic character development like this rather than the mistakes you often see beginner writers make: Have a character entirely change who they are because of one extremely traumatic event 😂. A pessimist will always be a pessimist and an optimist an optimist, but a pessimist can be happy and an optimist sad. Either way, Luffy's character is refreshing, funny, reliable and honestly in my opinion the best shonen mc I've seen. He has everything he needs to have to be a good mc, even if he isn't everyone's favorite. I'd be pretty sad if he started acting completely different, taking away Luffys smile to make him more 'serious' would be like taking the heart out of one piece.

Another small thing I would like to point out is that, on a meta-level, Luffy as well as the other members of his crew (especially Zoro and Sanji) are all symbolic representations of ideals bigger than themselves, especially Luffy, as he is the symbolic representation of Freedom and Strenght of Spirit.

Indeed. The thematic layers of One Piece are fantastic. They have been steadily built upon consistently from the first chapter and have developed into something truly spectacular.

the greatest thing about luffy is him saving other people and his dream is under same line,or is almost similar because he wants everyone he cares about to be free,and he wants to be pirate king because he believes,pirate king is the the most unrestricted person on the seas So even if he values his crew or friends more than his goal,both are because he loves freedom

I think the luffy is a prime example of how a simple character can still have depth.
@WritingCorner
@WritingCorner Жыл бұрын
I think that is a fair way to put. For sure simple motivations and world views. I kind of view it as more of a force of nature. That a hurricane doesn't have complexity, but the outcomes and situations of one can result in complex things happening. Of course you get into kind of hard to articulate areas with Flat-Characters who receive a lot of development. Because they are still simple, but also have a lot that has built up overtime.

I really like the fact that you showed the "Sorry, but I'm dead" scene from Loguetown because I fully agree that it can sum up Luffy's character. Honorable mentions that I would like to share that also stays with me is the scene from the first episode where he tells Coby that he has decided to be the Pirate King and that he doesn't care if he dies for it. That he's doing it because he *wants* to. That line has been with me ever since. The other one is where he tells his Grand Fleet that he doesn't want to be someone important but just wants to be the Pirate King, which is the freest person on the Sea. Even Law was a bit baffled in that scene, but that's our Luffy. His desire for freedom is truly one of his best traits. Though I might disagree a bit on the smiling at death if it were to happen later. I respect and see your points. I think it's about how Oda chooses to execute the scene (if he were to die). What's the cause of death and at what point of time. I believe there's a lot of strings being pulled because there are a lot of possible "endings" to his death scene. Though I would imagine him dying with an accomplished smile on his face rather than the one we saw in Loguetown. Again, depends on the situation. Even tho this comment is late, I'll just say that I enjoyed the analysis!

The only mistake in this video i've seen is that Rob Lucci is really not the first person luffy knows he can't win against. That would be Aokiji. At least in my head it is. Luffy had all the others go away and demanded a 1 on 1 with him, sacrificing himself to let every get away.
@WritingCorner
@WritingCorner 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Aokiji is the first opponent out of Luff's league and the reason he started training to get stronger. Though, that doesn't sound as good in the script and also I feel each loss represents a different piece of development for Luffy. With Lucci's win being more important to the Gear development, or at least for Gear Second.

I feel op gets a lot of hate and people don't want to watch it but if you take the time to watch it. Its better than most animes especially when the supporting cast stays up there in usefulness compared to other animes. Like dragon ball so many characters from the beginning become useless and are just bystanders. I feel the same for Naruto and other shounen. We also see so much development between characters in OP compared to to other animes and power progression feeling more natural. Luffy also doesn't have some deep hidden power unique to him but his attitude and his determination to his dreams and his friends is what makes him stronger.

ya sorry but you got luffy character wrong.... luffy would still smile if he about to die because its an trait that all D has even if he got killed by big mom or kaido at least he did what he wanted because he chased the freedom he seek ya luffy grew but its not that huge shift in character he stabbed himself to show that he was tought enough to be a pirate because even at that age pre gumgum fruit garp was leaving him alone in islands for days and beat the fucked out of him when he misbehaved and odds are his punches was as strong as pistols after seeing the training he did with garp ....luffy wanted to be the pirate king because he wants freedom plus he wanted to become stronger the shanks and its a title he knew from a young age that shank cant beat if he became it..he also didnt gain a crew just to cross some x.s off a list of thing he wanted a crew because he is understood that in order to become a pirate king you need the best crew he can gain its why he search for people like zoro who had a name before joining the crew he knew that he wasnt able to reach his dreams with out em..ya luffy played around allot in the early fights but thats him testing out new power ideas one piece didnt believe in training arc till before the timeskip which we didnt even get to watch outside of the flash back ...also croc wrecked him over and over again ...the shift of trying to become stronger didnt happen in water 7 his lost started in long ring long land he got completely wrecked and robin almost got kidnap he knew he wasnt strong enough to beat him so he began looking for ways that he can beat a ice user....which ended up with him pumping blood thru his vains to the point where it steam because his body heat raise ....ya he learned the skills from lucci and his team but he alter it enough to make it work in ways that he needed... i believe when he was stuck between the two building it was that time he figured out how to use the gears his body was compressed enough .... with gear 3rd was the same he needed something that he could bring all his power into one punch... his friends was always import to him its why he fought to get nami back and knew who he wanted to on his crew he took care on who he allowed on his ship because he knew he needed men who would fit his idea of what a crew is like..it wasnt something he just change on a dime... also luffy didnt fail on saving ace he saved him ace took his free will and threw away his life by fighting someone who was outside of his league ..after the morning phase he realized that ace lived his life how he wanted.... also when they was kids they never wanted to sail together because they all wanted to become captains and each of them would be under the others.... his crew was always the most important thing to him its why he used gears even tho it shorten his life its why he stack gears in thriller bark he knew if he didnt win on the time clock he was on he was going to lose his crew its why water 7 they was beaten so badly by cp9 it wasnt that they wasnt strong enough it because they already felt a fracture within the group with robin going missing and ussop leaving thecrew and going merry being forced into retirement ..they lost because of a broken spirit not because they was to weak....

Okay so, you’re making a lot of leaps in logical that aren’t supported by the material itself. Some of which that are already disproven by what’s in the manga, or by things Oda has discussed previously. I almost feel like you’re just trying to counter points brought up even if it doesn’t really make sense to do so. Like the segment where you talk about Luffy deciding to get stronger before water 7, but then only sighting things that happened during water 7. And your read on the gears isn’t any different then the one in the video. So, I am unsure why you had written them out as counters when they are (again) the same. The only difference is I brought up what they meant on a thematic layer. I don’t understand bringing up his training, that doesn’t counter anything said in the video. As to the crew not being names on a list, that is just false. Luffy through the whole series invites random people he just met to be on his crew, not knowing a thing about them. Most of them don’t join and the ones who do join it’s purely a coincidence that they where good at what they do. The speech Luffy gave Arlong about having a crew that can cover his weakness is true, but that doesn’t change the fact that Luffy’s version of weakness are things like, lying, not being a skeleton, not being any type of weird animal creature. The “One piece not believing in training arcs” Is just false. I don’t have every Oda interview off hand, but I can guarantee that is not accurate to the series. And I believe Oda had thought about the time skip at least four-five years before it happened. The ace thing is just splitting hairs and doesn’t actually change anything I spoke about. (Also, the brothers had thought about sailing together, but as you said each of them wanted to be captain so it didn’t work out). Them loosing in water seven “because of a broken spirit” is not based on anything in the manga, and frankly doesn’t make sense for One Piece at all. Your saying the men that would smile at death, fight against the strongest people in the world without a care, and do anything to save a friend. Lost because they where slightly confused because Robin was gone and sad Usop was throwing a hissy fit? I honestly think you’re just going out of your way to disagree with the points in the video. You don’t have to make a long write up to “prove” your points. You can just leave a comment saying “I don’t really agree with your interpretation of the character, good video anyways.” And leave it at that. Trying to endlessly find argument points, just makes your side weaker and is not needed. You emotionally didn’t agree. Don’t try to logic an answer to it.

@@WritingCorner I do agree with your analysis of Luffy, but I'd like to point to one scene in water 7 that, (imo) proove Zan w was correct about water 7 and broken spirit. when luffy was trapped in between 2 buildings and nami finally found him, she couldn't get him out. she instead started telling luffy about robin and how she really didn't want to leave the crew. luffy was clearly relieved by it so nami insisted that if he really cared about robin, he'd break free from the buildings and chase cp9. this was an important moment for luffy, and you can most definetely see that just the fact of him knowing that robin cares for them is enough to break him free from where he was trapped for hours, in seconds. the entire point of water seven was to split the crew and take them to an all-time low. Robin left, merry broke down, they were robbed, their crew member was beaten to a pulp and usopp fought with luffy. (Don't straw man usopp's fight as a hissy fit, you even said in this video that this is something important for his character.) Usopp and Luffy are best friends, them fighting is bound to have a lasting effect on the crew! Saying broken spirit is not "One Piece like" is just flat out wrong because it fits one of the main themes, willpower. almost every fight luffy has, is in some way a testimony to his will to win. he wanted to beat crocodile because he was the bad guy responsible for vivi's tears. even if he lost 2 times, his will never faltered. if his will falters, how could it affect luffy's fighting? this is one of the themes presented in water 7 and one of the reasons usopp vs luffy, merry breaking and robin leaving is impactful! you notice that luffy falters, you even notice luffy crying for the first time since shanks lost his arm! if this is not a broken spirit, a will without conviction, then what is? again, I agree with your assessment of luffy's character, but you completely missed the meaning of water 7.
@WritingCorner
@WritingCorner 4 жыл бұрын
Okay, so the read on water seven is a bit strange. To say Luffy loses from a broken will is completely speculative. It doesn't match up with any other point in the series. Yes if Luffy had a broken will then it's true that this arc's low point would have been lower, but that is just leaving it in a vacuum. Luffy having a broken will goes against some of the core fundamental points of the series. It would not be "Oh I guess Luffy lost because he was upset", it would be a major focal point for not just the arc it was in, but the series as a whole. There is a moment where Luffy's will is actually broken, at the end of White Beard War. The context and execution of which is not even comparable to water sevens typical "Luffy getting in over his head" stick. Saying the point of Water seven being reaching a low before a high is correct, as it is with every arc. (Also just a note. Something being important does not equal correct. Usop leaving is important. The reason it's important is because it's *pedantic*. Luffy can't forgive Usop because what he did was childish, bullheaded, and morally questionable. We see Luffy deal with crew members leaving outside of Water seven and he treats them completely differently then Usop. The leaving is not important to Luffy, it's the fact he denied an order from his captain that is the problem). "Saying broken spirit is not "One Piece like" is just flat out wrong because it fits one of the main themes, willpower." This doesn't make sense to me. This means the opposite of what your going for. The point of Luffy's character is "willpower" so him wavering over what's happened doesn't fit that theme. Crying does not equal falter, Luffy has cried many times through the series before and after water seven. (It is a false statement of him crying for the first time since Shanks {It is in fact off the mark visibly by dozens of on screen cries and multiple off screen}). This is not Luffy wavering. I would in fact say that the interpretation you have of Water seven is actually the opposite of the themes of the arc. It's not an arc about losing. It's an arc about overcoming immense obstacles and hardships. Coming out on the other side stronger. I don't really think this exchange will lead to any changed ideas, since what you got from Water Seven is so vastly different from most peoples that we don't have much equal ground to work from. I will say that potentially re-thinking the arc with some context from later in the series and comparing it to other arcs might have some of your ideas on it change.
@thehatmaniac6958

@@WritingCorner Writing Corner okay, I don't really agree with any of your points, but I see us disagreeing as unimportant in this discussion. what I was trying to point out, and probably didn't do a good enough job of, was that the theme and meaning of a story changes from one person to another. although I don't agree with the comment above on he meaning of water 7, I can see their arguments and understand what they took away from this arc. although you say a broken spirit is contradictory to the relevance of water 7, I believe that this is a low point that simulate a "weakened" spirit. it shows us what the future holds if the crew can't stick together, (sabaody) and you're not (again, imo) acknowledging the important will to continue the crewmates give luffy. anyway, back to what I was disgusted by, (sorry to say), is that you imply one way of analysing an arc is correct. I loved your video, it made me rethink some of the reasons luffy is a good character, but by saying; I should rethink a story just because I read some thematic differences, feeds into a big problem in society today. we aren't allowed a difference of opinion. yes, people can definetely word their criticism better, or their counter-argument, but flat-out rejecting my interpretation will only end up dividing us more. (ps: don't use arguments as most people/majority if no study has been done. even if a study has been done, what good does it do to refute a minority? majority of people didn't know that the earth was flat 2500 years ago, but did it make it untrue?) btw, can you mention times luffy cries in one piece, I'm genuinely curious, since I've read the series multiple times and only remember 5-6 times, shanks' arm, usopp fight, amazon lily (I think) merry and his brothers. (for when he's sad at least😅)
@WritingCorner
@WritingCorner 4 жыл бұрын
I think the main thing here stems from the fact you see his point for Water seven and I don't. Yes the themes of Water Seven as I said would be impacted by these ideas, but the context of the arc doesn't lend itself to them well. The biggest misunderstanding here is that you are taking my statements and giving them the least charitable interpretation to them. Saying something I said is a straw-man, is by all means fighting words and not a thing to be thrown out lightly. Once again it seems your viewing what I'm saying in the worse way possible. "that you imply one way of analysing an arc is correct." This is taking what I was discussing to such an extreme end of the spectrum that it doesn't even relate to the same discussion any more. " I should rethink a story just because I read some thematic differences, feeds into a big problem in society today. we aren't allowed a difference of opinion. yes, people can definetely word their criticism better, or their counter-argument, but flat-out rejecting my interpretation will only end up dividing us more." This here seems to be the thesis of what you've been getting at. It however is coming out from an awkward angle. I am not rejecting your read because it is "different" I am rejecting it because your arguments for it aren't strong enough. As what you said on majority that also feeds into what I am talking about. I brought up never hearing anyone having taken away these themes from water seven as to show why it's hard to just accept them without ample evidence. I do not believe in majority rule (obviously) and taking that reading from what I said is looking at my arguments in the worse way possible. You are making a bold claim for Water Seven that I have never heard before. We have spent most the time discussing things outside of the claim itself. It's been back and forth talking about other things that (really) didn't exist in the first place. I am not saying your read is necessarily wrong, just that it would need a hefty well thought out argument in order for me to take it seriously. Because I have needed to be on the defense for most of these comments I haven't had the opportunity to really engage in why I think the read I have makes more sense and also haven't been able to directly ask why you think your's makes sense. Me saying to re-analyze the themes of the story works in a sense twice over. One it allows you to rethink the arc with fresher eyes to see if your interpretation holds weight to your current self (a thing which you have to do all the time, this is one of the most important parts of having a well rounded understanding of the media you consume). Another is, that if you re-analyze it and you come to the same conclusion, maybe then they could be explained better, so that others can also appreciate your understanding of it. (As to examples of crying, you somewhat touched on some. When he was training with under Garp there where 4-5 instances where you see Luffy cry {Some being just a couple panels, one being the major cry}. A lot of the lead in's to arcs will have a scene where Luffy cries about something {usually something happened to his hat, or his food and he gets real upset about it}. A recent example would be when he got his new bounty around chapter 900 {If I recall there weren't direct tears that was more of a depression thing, but that is usually the context of him getting upset}. Early One Piece Luffy cried very little, but as it went on the amounts increased a bit. He doesn't cry all the time like the weaker crew members do, but Luffy is fairly emotional and does let tears out from time to time).

Yes. We usually only see motivated Luffy for brief moments. Even debatably actual moments. Like Alrong Park, it's clear he is more serious after talking with Nami, but I don't believe he switches to 100% serious mode until he sees Nami's room and fully snaps. Probably the longest Luffy was serious prior to trying to save Ace, was his long bout with Crocadile. Where he is constantly fighting and adapting. Or debatably off screen when he trains to get the Gears. But then we see him focus up during the Time-Skip and future arcs. Someone could probably do a analysis of the story, seeing how Luffy grew to control and channel his focus as the series goes on. All culminating in a moment I won't specifically say, since it's a Spoiler. But for everyone who has reached that point, they know. The real culmination of everything up to that point, finally coming together fully.

Mh, yes I got another comment like this earlier. For this video I was more focused on analyzing the themes of the Gears, rather then the strict mechanics of them. But for the Gears, it is easy to assume that training, or at least a perspective shift, happened with Aokiji. However, the Gears themselves hadn't formed yet. More so planting the seed in Luffy's head. Because we see him discuss how he went about crafting the Gears. And him directly stating he made Gear 2nd based on CP9's Soru ability. So a timeline would look like. Aokiji shows Luffy he is weak. CP9 First encounter shows that it is speed and strength that is the problem. He makes Gear 2nd and 3rd to counter those problems. With of course, much more direct discussion had in the Manga about why and how he went about creating further developments to his fighting style.

i love luffy simply as a person who cares about people who need help or friendship, hes pure even when hes being funny, he does the impossible even when the cards are stacked against him and his friends are in desperate help and need a hero, hes selfless, unjealous, and cares about the innocent even when he himself is in trouble, he only accepts truly kind people into his inner circle and even people who are scared of pirates he just sticks up for them because its not his or his crews fault, it goes to show that without luffy or even all his crew there would be less silver lining between there lives, zoro wouldnt have found so much friends and would be in trouble, nami would have been abused her whole life, chopper would have been missing a lot of happiness in his life, sanji wouldnt have strived for all blue, brook wouldnt have been found in thriller bark and would have possibly been alone and despite it wouldnt have never hade a completely big music carreer even if it was a short lived one, usopp wouldnt have stayed happy and wouldnt be anywhere, my/our dear sweet nico robin would have yeah completely given up her life if the crew didnt follow her into enies lobby and frankie would probably really got himself into serious trouble 0_0 and the series would have been over right there done O_O, jinbei wouldnt have hade any one to eventually join up with and couldnt save luffys life, and me as a fan i wouldnt have been as driven as i am today and i would have forgot to laugh and smile again i wouldnt have lived as long as now and that would have been a loss, oh and luffy sometimes acts weirdly but its all for a joke of the straw hat member in front of him🤜🤛 you would need to balance the story here and there✍ and yeah i wouldnt change a thing!

It’s saying something that Luffy is the best character in the best Manga. I would say people too easily loose sight of the impact of One Piece. But really, people seem to always forget the impact of art in general. One Piece is a fantastic story, with incredible themes and characters. It has deeply impacted the lives of hundreds of millions of people and has been doing so for decades. And as any one who has come to truly appreciate it, including Oda himself, would more then know there is no One Piece without Luffy. Even when everything seems lost and all hope is gone, mens’ dreams never truly die. And One Piece is the type of series to remind people of there own dreams that are waiting for them.

I disagree on the Ussop fight. He doesn’t view Ussop fighting against the merry being replaced as him getting in the way of pirate king. He’s getting pissed because he understands the merry is dying and is torn up himself at having to leave it behind and Ussop is pouring salt into that wound

Wasn’t the scene at 3:08 kinda forced? Buggy was established to be dangerous, but to the audience he was a clown that Luffy didn’t even bother to remember at first. I feel like “ignorance” is misinterpreted as “strength” in this case. This scene just felt forced to me, like Oda felt he had to drive home that Luffy was the main character one more time. We didn’t know about the sea stone that stops Devil Fruit users he never really looked like he was in danger, being that Buggy and his pirates didn’t pose much of a threat to Luffy beforehand. Especially since he got restrained without any resistance.

I wouldn't say that is it. More so that his dream evolved to better represent his Nakama and others. Like I think Punk Hazard is a good example, where Luffy started out messing around, but when he got chewed out by Zoro for it he focused up and managed to clutch the dub.

Dont misunderstand it, becoming pirate king is just a side-quest in luffy's story. His true dream is to achieve the most freedom on the sea, and to achieve true freedom he needs to be pirate king, and we see this during sabaody where luffy corrects rayleigh and says "I don't to conquer anything, I just want to be free"
@WritingCorner
@WritingCorner Жыл бұрын
You are right that Pirate King is a secondary thing to his goal. I do not think you are right in what you identified as his true goal. That his true goal is a lot harder to come to a conclusion of, but is simultaneously a lot more simple then "Being the most free."

@@WritingCorner Luffy literally trained for ten years from 7 to 17 that's why it felt like he breezed through East Blue. After Sabo died Luffy and Ace spent more time training bc now they had extra motivation. Garp also trained him here and there when he was around. All the straw hats have developed as characters. What I love about Oda is the simple details. Black Maria keeps telling Nico Robin how Sanji betrayed her and left her to be killed. But Nico Robin knows very well that Sanji is more than welling to put his life for her something that he once did before in Anisloby and will always do. Nico Robin a character that just wanted to die that had almost zero connection to the crew for the longest time turned into a devil for Sanji and when all set and done she trusts Brook to save her because she is exhausted. She doesn't only want to live she loves her life and her friends and trusts them with her life so casually. I really love her character development. But I would say the one that had the most character development is Sanji the man that hated his exsistance, he totally believed he was nothing but a failure and kind people like Zef and his crew loves him yet he doesn't deserve it. The man in his fight with Queen uttered the best line he ever said "goodbye, Girma". Sanji needs a series not just a video.
@WritingCorner
@WritingCorner Жыл бұрын
Sanji did get some big jumps in development. One of the reasons I put off the Sanji video was because Whole Cake was starting and it seemed like it would give him a lot. Then he gets even more in Wano. Debatably a lot more then Zoro, which is wacky given it was Wano. But it wasn't like Zoro needed it, so it is what it is. But I could even see multiple videos being made on Sanji. Especially, since he at times has been a bit of a punching bag for the community (unfairly, that is). At the very least looking at his development and his role in the story is important.
