Honestly, Luka is a pretty good choice. His English is excellent, he can speak fluent Spanish so good for NBA expanding their brand in most of Latin America, he's pretty extraverted and willing do do media stuff unlike Jokic and to a lesser degree Giannis, he's young and conventionally attractive, his game will age very well so we don't have to worry about a D-Rose situation nearly as much, he's in a massive market (Dallas-Ft. Worth is the 4th largest metro area in thr nation in the second biggest state) and he is fun for casuals to watch. He has an advantage over basically any other young player in multiple ways. No one has the combo of his skill, entertainment value, good media personality and location in a huge market. He just needs to stop yelling at the refs so much (though this didn't hurt Bron and MJ so who knows) and at least get to an NBA Finals.

On other points though: On ppg, Luka has the greatest usage rate in NBA history, takes by far the most shots in the NBA - so far ahead of the next closest guy that the difference in attempts between him and #2 (Brunson) is the same as #2 to #15. His efficiency, however, is 55th in FG%, 37th in 2p% (22nd among non-centers) and 69th in 3p% among players shooting more than 3 three-pointers a game. (18th out of 40 in 3p% among the high-volume shooters who take 6 or more 3's per game). In other words, Luka has the ppg lead because he takes an absurd more amount of shots than anyone in the NBA, on record-setting usage, not because of elite shooting. On assists, Jokic still has more assists per possession than Luka. Luka's 0.8 more assists are purely because he plays 10% more minutes with the largest usage rate in NBA history. Also, his 9.8 assists as a point guard are dramatically less above average for his position than Jokic's 9 assists per game as a center, making Jokic's assists that much more valuable. On rebounds, Luka actually only gets 1.9 contested rebounds a game (the only kind that provide value to his team) - all the other rebounds (~80% of them) are freebie, uncontested rebounds that his teammates let him have to pad his stats. His 1.9 contested rebounds are 93rd in the NBA, and only 1/3 of Jokic's (who is 2nd in the NBA at 5.6, only 0.1 behind Anthony Davis). Matter of fact, Luka's contested rebound% (the percent of his rebounds that he has to contest for) is only 20.9%, good for 393rd in the NBA. That is not a typo. So while Luka is an outstanding player, the value he's providing to his team is not on Jokic's level.

When talking about Luka specifically, he has been crucified this season even though his team was the 3rd most injured and the entire offense was through him (since the backup was bad), which obviously takes a lot of energy. Now the Mavs are healthy, he does a lot more on the defensive end, and they are looking like the hottest team. They are likely finishing top 5 in the most difficult division with all that, and they don't give Luka credits for carrying the team when all of that was going on. He has made crazy improvements this season in so many aspects of his game, and it isn't talked about outside 1 media person. Likely being the only person that voted for Luka as MVP.

in reality everything gilbert arenas is complaining about is the exact opposite of what's actually happening. players like tatum get thrown into the MVP conversation over players like luka even though they have no case for MVP. luka actually gets the ball hog narrative thrown at him constantly while someone like jalen brunson who has a higher time of possession on less touches and less minutes played doesn't get the same treatment. all while averaging way fewer points and assists. make it make sense. luka is constantly getting compared to james harden in the media. when in reality luka is a better player than harden in multiple ways. he's also a better playoff performer and has just as much playoff success as harden had being the main guy. all at a younger age. just peak irony.

I feel a lot of these dudes are just propping up the American players because they know alot of the euro players black or white are just better overall players. They got coached by either pro or semi professional coaches at a young age that harp on physical play, team work, and fundamentals of the game. We in the states have AAU teams that pretty much are just and1 mixtape with more rules where it’s alot of one on one play. All the nba stars were the stars of these teams so yeah you got big men who can handle the rock and shoot, but even coaches like poppovich say he has to teach pros how to properly set screens. Luka I would say plays the most like an “American players” considering his favorite player is lebron; he’s one of the few European players who over dribbles but that could be argued that could be the way the team is set up. Regardless he does not move without the ball well. I feel jayson Tatum and other players from America have a tendency to give up a lot quicker. Yeah you can say jokic looks apathetic sometimes, but you can’t say that about someone like Giannis.

Is comparable to a Magic or a LeBron in their game. The scoring and the passing. He’s not on their level yet to say today he’s as good as those players. We aren’t going to say he’s better than Bird, Magic, LeBron, or Jordan. He’s young and got a long way to go. But the skills are there to see him being in the conversation with those guys when we project his career and what he will do in this game by the time he’s done.

To be the face you have to be the face of teams that contend most years like the Bulls or LeBrons Heat/Cavs did. Luka might win a championship or two but his Mavs are unlikely to contend every year. And thats what being "the face" really is about. And I'm not a rings person but the main character is the one the story follows the most.

I’m a Mavs and whenever Luka is brought up by other fanbases, the number one criticism is that he don’t play any defense even though that’s far from true this year. So to say that he doesn’t get criticized for it is 1000% untrue. In fact, Reggie Miller was the one who called him out for being out of shape as one of the key reasons why it’s was so poor and the media ran away with that take for like two years. Lol.

I agree that Luka is basically a prime Harden. The treatment between him and a prime Harden is baffling. We never considered a prime Harden the best player although his stats were other worldly. We’ve been quick to put Luka in that convo. This is the first year he may be there.

Because Luka is already better than peak Harden at age 25… Luka’s best FG% 3PT% 2PT% eFG% are all better than Harden’s career high. More rebounds per game than Harden’s ever had. It took Harden a decade on infinitely more talented teams what it’s taken Luka 5 years to match and largely surpass individually. Infinitely better passer than Harden at any point. And again, he’s 25. Peak Harden was 28-30.
