I guess I can't say I was affected. I knew enough not to pollute my childhood memories with "The Force Awakens," "The Last Jedi," or "The Rise of Skywalker." And if you sadly did, no problem. Just run through the films you DO like enough times, and you'll forget all about the ones you rightly hated. Also, try something new. (If you like SW enough, this is a small price.) Switch your focus and try ALL the different orders you can think of. NUMERICAL ORDER (1,2,3,4,5,6), PRODUCTION ORDER (4,5,6,1,2,3), MACHETE ORDER (4,5,1,2,3,6), STORYTELLER ORDER (4,1,2,5,3,6) and OBI WAN ORDER (4,1,2,3,5,6). It wipes out the bad memories with something new to focus on. Good luck. And I'm sorry for what you went through in those TERRIBLE DISNEY FARCES.

The Grey Path I’m not sure that this is true, but I heard a rumour it’s because of (more so) how Johnson/Kennedy treated Luke. Mark knew everything about Luke Skywalker, read all the EU books, and played some of the games too. He truly understood the character better than all of us, and they still managed to force him to not play the character George would have wanted.

Darth'd had an interesting video on Luke and this isn't a defense of Jake Skywalker, but just a deep dive on it. He actually makes a case that Luke wasn't guilt ridden because he thought about killing Ben. He was guilt ridden that he didn't kill Ben. He makes the point that it's really weird and drastic that Ben tried to kill Luke and murderer most of his students over one incident and was already working for Snoke. That Luke feels guilty he couldn't bring himself to stop Kylo when he had the chance.

However, this about Luke Skywalker; the character who went from moisture farm boy to adventurer and trained to be a Jedi Knight. He stumbled and failed on his journey numerous times, losing his hand in the process and yet, still held out hope and ascended. This is the character that in a moment of fury and rage when dueling his father Darth Vader, withdrew and relented allowing the Emperor to torture Luke as he resisted the temptation of the dark side while calling for his father who came back to the light side one more time. It wasn't Luke that won the day; It was Anakin through Luke's beckoning and love for his father that incited that change culminating in the victory for the republic and defeat for the empire. Luke is the bastion of hope; in himself, his family and his friends. He's essentially that character who puts himself in harm's way no matter the cost. Like others have stated, Luke Skywalker IS the hero's journey. Killing Kylo / Ben isn't in character for Luke; something easy and convenient. An idea left to an unseasoned person who never experienced or witnessed an act of redemption. That's Jake Soywoker. Luke would find other ways to save his nephew and come to the aid of the so-called Resistance.

In his TFA video he complains how nothing is properly set up and it causes problems down the line like Luke's dramatic character transformation in TLJ. I know someone who predicted Jake Skywalker back in 2015. The biggest problem with Jake Skywalker is we never see him develop into this character and it's extremely jarring. The point is that Luke couldn't bring himself to kill Kylo precisely because he's Luke Skywalker. You know Luke Skywalker would never kill his nephew, but by not making that personal sacrifice Kylo Ren went rampaging across the galaxy. In Darth'd video explained that Kylo was already working for Snoke before his confrontation with Luke. The reason Kylo attacks Luke and kill the students is he knows he's been found out. It's the conundrum of Batman and Joker. Batman keeps letting the Joker live and Joker just goes on to kill more people. One thing people need to remember is Luke is a person not just a symbol. It's not crazy after such a bad personal setback someone might feel down and out and I can imagine their being a bit of existential angst when his highest quality, his forgiveness and compassion for his family is what lead to disaster. The huge problem is such a story needs to play out on screen. Not be dumped on us after we haven't seen the guy in 30 years. P.S. whether such a story is appropriate for the mainline saga is another debate altogether.

As I stated before, it goes against Luke's character, regardless of how Darth'd tries to cherry pick moments and scenes to support his case. I won't rehash the first one as I already stated it previously. Second. Darth'd identifies how divisive TLJ is and why many fans were upset with the way Luke was portrayed but then he introduces us to his phrase "But what everyone missed is..." as if there is an underlying element about the movie that ties everything together that no one else but Darth'd himself figured out, which is in and of itself, a defense of the film. He proceeds to dissect the movie in a vacuum while selectively pulling scenes from previous films and spinning tales to support his case. Third The director himself, by virtue of his own admission, was not interested in world building or creating universes. He was only interested in telling a two hour story to an audience. Here are excerpts from that interview. I believe it is from the Hollywood Reporter. Reporter: “Whenever you are writing, let’s say you are creating your own universe, you said you don’t think about actors, you are starting something from scratch, how is that approach versus something where you have a pre-existing universe? If you are writing characters for Star Wars, you have this universe, you have characters that everybody knows, and then now you are doing something from scratch. Do you find your approach is different for that?” RJ; Johnson would respond, “No, not at all. Because I don’t really think in terms of universes or in terms of creating worlds or whatever. That’s not that interesting to me.” He continued, “The only thing that is interesting to me is story. And the story specific to, like whether you are writing a Star Wars film that’s part of a three movie trilogy or a quote unquote original thing like Knives Out, you are still telling a story that is new to the thing that you are doing that it has to work within the context of that movie.” Johnson added, “So, to me the notion of what’s the entire galaxy or world that you are creating or something, I can’t imagine getting excited about creating that. To me what I’m excited about is creating a two hour long experience for an audience to have in the theater. And that means how they engage moment to moment with the story and the characters that are on the screen. And that doesn’t change in either one of those.” Bottom line here is, the explanation Darth'd gives is under the premise that movie canon is taken into account ( as he uses parts of movie canon to support his theory ) and it is, by his optics alone. But this isn't reality. Rian Johnson completely negates this premise with his own admissions. Now, if you want an explanation of how Luke Skywalker MIGHT have worked in TLJ, watch Critical Drinker's video on fixing Luke Skywalker in TLJ. It's fairly thorough and is a lot less jarring than what moviegoers were given by RJ.

She was really turned off any kind of new star wars as a result. I did convince her to watch the mandalorian, and she's now 5 episodes in and really likes it. When TROS came out, the agenda people already finished their mission. the damage has been done. no more reason to stick with a franchise they don't care about. a lot of fans also either boycott the movie or just stopped giving a fuck about new SW releases after TLJ and Solo happened. which leaves us with: 1) the people who dislike TLJ but liked TFA and wanna see how it ends 2) the people who dislike the sequels in general but stuck around to see how it ends 3) the half that liked TLJ for the wrong reasons and stuck around to see more of those reasons. 4) casual viewers who just wanna see a trilogy ending somehow disney manages to dissapoint 3 out of those 4. Luke Skywalker is one of the most beloved characters of all time. He is the hero everyone wanted to be. And Disney ruined him by turning Luke into a disgruntled old man that no one seemed to believe that was the hero we grew up loving. All that character growth was for nothing. Just to make Rey, Kylo, Finn and Poe look cool. No body cares about the new characters everyone wanted to see Luke not Rey. So screw Disney for ruining our hero.

I can't agree more. If Luke had one major battle with his iconic green saber, the fans would have watched the movie 20 times in the theater. I still can't understand how Disney does not understand this. I wish just for argument's sake, that they made Star Wars X brought Luke back to the flesh and made him the hero. Something I feel like is under appreciated about the EU is that they killed Luke, but they did it offscreen. We don't know how he died, only that he was dead centuries later (which makes complete sense). They never tried to give him a death that felt like it was worthy of him because the truth is that there was no way to give him a death like that: he is too much of an icon. The EU never shied away from death, and many of the deaths were heartbreaking and impactful. We saw the death of Mara Jade at the hands of Caedus. We saw the death of Caedus at the hands of his sister. We even saw the death of some OT characters. But never Luke. Say what you want about the Walking Dead (and I'll probably agree) but they knew the same thing. That they couldn't kill Rick, and they couldn't kill Clementine. They had them exit stage left. The thing about Luke is that he IS Star Wars. You might prefer the Old Republic (like me), the prequels, or the sequels (either EU or Disney). You might not even like Luke. But he is Star Wars. He could never be made a killable paragon like Obi Wan or Yoda. They killed their heart by killing him on screen, and they did it in one of the worst ways possible to boot after trying to kill him as an icon by destroying his character.

WHAT kind of reasoning is "Luke will take away attention from the main characters of the sequel trilogy"? Of COURSE he will but that is what happens when ever you add an important or legendary character in ANY movie. The same thing happened when Yoda finally fight on screen against Doku even though it was Anakin and Obi Wan fighting. I had the same initial reaction but when I got to my car something hit me like a punch in the gut and realized SJW Rian Johnson just desecrated my childhood hero Luke Skywalker. As a 1st Generation Star Wars fan who saw New Hope in theaters at 1977, I realized Disney not only had no idea what it takes to make a Star Wars movie, but deliberately erased the most iconic mythological hero in cinematic history. It took only 12 to 15 hours after seeing that movie that I vowed to never see it again because it desecrated everything about the Hero's Journey George Lucas had established. As long as SJW Kathleen Kennedy is in charge of anything related to Lucasfilm, I won't waste my time, let alone my money to anything she puts out. I have my 6 Episodes Star Wars box set, that now is in impossible to find in stores, and that's the only box set us true hardcore Star Wars fans will ever consider canon. Period.

You are spot on once again, Jeremy. Luke Skywalker, and even Mark Hamill, deserved MUCH better treatment. Here's hoping that someone with a clue takes over at Lucasfilm and decides to make a Disney+ series about Luke's life between Episode VI and the Disney sequels. Then, when enough time has passed, we can produce another sequel trilogy that actually makes sense. One where Luke, Han and Leiah are given the proper sendoffs they deserve (riding off into the twin sunset), and the current Disney trilogy is removed from canon and lost in the sands of a remote planet in a galaxy far, far away.

The Luke we love was in the original Expanded Universe. Even if George had done the sequels he would not have been the same Luke as the EU. He would have been a celibate monk without a wife or children. To me that is Jake Skywalker, it is not Luke. Even if Lucas says that is Luke. So yes i wanted to see Luke as a Grand Master of the Jedi order, i wanted to see Ben Skywalker and Mara Jade Skywalker. I wanted to see Jaina Solo, Jacen Solo and Anakin Solo.I wanted to see Boba Fett as a Mandalorian and alive. I wanted to see Jedi and Sith, a New Republic and an Imperial Remnant and the Empire. I wanted to see a bunch of new worlds and locations.
