LUKE THOMAS: TOM ASPINALL Is the REAL UFC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP |

Luke Thomas: Tom Aspinall's path of destruction through the heavyweight division while he defends his interim UFC heavyweight title - including beating Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 - is vastly more accomplished and representative of what it means to be a weight class champion than Jon Jones's. While Jones has had one fight and is potentially retiring after fighting the already semi-retired Stipe Miocic, Aspinall is beating one top contender after another and doing so in record time.
For that reason and in speaking of the practical realities, Aspinall should be considered the real UFC heavyweight champion.

Tom Aspinall beat Alexander Volkov, Sergei Pavlovich, and Curtis Blaydes. He is literally the real champ. Jon Jones beat Ciryl Gane. And Ciryl Gane was not the champ. Beating Ciryl Gane once is NOT more valuable than beating three other top contenders.

Agree. Even if Gane was the clear best contender (he wasn’t, but whatever) that still wouldn’t be worth as much as 3 contenders, because one isolated win in a division doesn’t necessarily tell us anything, however good that one win is. Most fighters could handpick one specific top guy in a different division that they might beat, based on a favourable stylistic dynamic. Any time a champ moves up into an immediate title match I kinda hate that. Sure they might win the second belt, but they almost certainly would not have been capable of a run of wins at that second weight class, so they’re absolutely not the best at that class.

@@jimmicrackhead12 you only serve to prove the point. Tom has beaten 15 heavyweights. Jones has beaten 1. That is not enough to prove he is a top heavyweight currently. He's spent 4.5 years yapping about heavyweight and only booked 2 actual HW fights in that entire time. A severely one-dimensional Gane, and an ancient Stipe. He's not really trying to test the theory he is a top heavyweight.

To me Aspinall's defence is an issue when two things are apparent. He is at a reach disadvantage and as a result rarely gets to actually find his range against his opponent. When the opponent has faster than average hands for HW which evens the playing field. Having a combination of both makes his defensive habits way worse. Add in stylistically straight punches are what you need to beat aspinall unless you can time the left hook. His leaning back is bad but at least it doesnt become atrocious because of two things, he seemingly has at least a decent chin for HW and that his shoulder roll is pretty good and covers a lot of that defensive mistake initially. The addition i would make on this topic is that in this fight particularly you see Aspinall get caught and was surprised Blaydes could hit him (see para 1 for why) and what he did was repeat the process and se what Blaydes was throwing and then read it and beat Blaydes to the punch. Aspinall's defence is as a result open in the initial minutes until he finds his range or can at least make reads on what you are throwing. To beat aspinall you need to not be slow i.e. plodding HW, have as long or longer arms. Throw straight but have enough variety to not make it an easy read. From what we have see thats the baseline route to beating Aspinall on the feet technically. Now its HW and no matter if Aspinall has an amazing chin, at HW it still takes just 1 timed shot with power.

Tom's defensive disadvantages seem to be working in his favor tho. He is agile with good head movement but gets clipped early. In his recent fights all that has done has made his opponents get over zealous and think they can stand with him. Next thing you know they are on the canvas.

If Jones retires without fighting Aspinall who is Aspinall’s competition? It would be hilarious if Tom sat out until the UFC either a) met Ngannou’s terms or b) released him. But it would be no worse than they deserve.

Aspinall has three 1st round finishes since Jon last fought. Jon’s only W at Heavyweight in his entire career is against Cyril Gane. Hes still insisting on fighting an old man who got KO’d 3 years ago and hasn’t fought since and who has no business being anywhere near the rankings, while Tom is not only the clear number one and the interim champ, he’s more of a legitimate HW champ than Jon himself. And when Jon isn’t trying to fight a washed up old man, he’s calling out a guy a weight class below him, all while telling the fans why he shouldn’t have to fight the interim champ… Shameful

@@redrum3419 Jon is on record saying he told the UFC this was the fight he wanted all along. Dana’s on record saying Jon has earned the right to do whatever he wants. They’re both disgracing the sport. Jon by handpicking the easiest matchup he can get away with. And Dana by valuing a potential big money fight over the legitimacy and integrity of the sport So in your mind you think Jon is just being a great employee and doing what he’s told? Insane

I liked your analysis. What is shame is that Dana White brags about Jon on all occasions without giving true credits to the real champion. We would like to see who walks out of the room (Jon vs Tom), as Dana says. Dana has put himself in a bad position when he set a fight between Jon and Stipe as no one is really interested to watch this fight.

I am prepared to lay good money Jon Jones is going to retire, whatever the result after the Stipe fight. He's stringing things along because he doesn't want Stipe to know he's done after their fight. I'll bet dollars to donuts that Jon has said this to Dana, and that is why he hasn't been stripped. Dana wants Jones to retire as the champ, assuming he beats Stipe, which is the most likely result. Jon should be stripped and the title given to Tom. If Jones wants it back, he can have a shot after the Stipe fight. But I'll bet he'll retire, then snipe from the sidelines about how he would have beaten Tom, but he retired.....
