Some people out there make the excuse that 'the only reason people love this ship is because it's a lesbian romance'. That's not the only reason at all. It's because the characters in it are worth caring about. Look how much development and characterization Amity got during every one of the episodes she played a major role in. I do sometime feel that people confuse "rushed" with "fast". TOH can certainly move at a breakneck pace at times, I personally like it, it doesnt feel like stuff gets dragged out, but I guess this is also a preference thing. "Rushed" to me imply that its underdeveloped, and no Lumity imo isnt that at all. The only thing I feel may qualify for that in this show is Liliths redemption (and frankly I enjoy the rest of the show too much to care much about that one)
@CurmudgeonMedia3 жыл бұрын
I agree, although with Lilith I don't think her redemption is done just yet. She's still in the process of overcoming her own insecurities. She did something awful as a child without fully understanding the implications of what she actually did. And it's clear she's got a long way to go yet. I wonder if she may end up having a dynamic with Hunter in a way that mirrors Eda and Luz, and if that will play into her quest for self-betterment. What matters for now is that 1) she split the curse and has taken onus for her actions, and 2) she now fully understands the suffering she caused Eda

I think one possible reason why people think the relationship is "rushed" is because in media relationships development is often stretched for as long as possible, dragged out, with the relationship only being confirmed at the very end of the show or movie, or in a season finale when you're already several seasons in. And it's not just lgbtq relationships that are treated this way, heterosexual romance also get that treatment. I recommend the Trope Talk episode on Romantic Subplots: toward the end of it Red comments that it seems like lots of writers seem to be at a loss about what to do once a relationship is past the "will they/won't they" stage and are actually in a relationship and that's why the big relationship confirming moments tend to come at the end of the story. That way the writers don't have to deal with the consequences. And if there's a sequel the relationship will often jump directly to "they're having problems/they broke up". So for Lumity to be confirmed before we're even halfway through season two, several episodes before the mid-season hiatus, it feels weird when you're so used to the "will they/won't they" being stretched out over long periods of time and the confirmation being used as a big finish thing.

@CurmudgeonMedia3 жыл бұрын
you are SO right, and what I love most about everything you've just said is that it shows Amity is STILL learning and STILL developing. It's not just this linear situation like "oh this character has now learned and they are complete," it's this ongoing, nuanced journey. I've seen a lot of people complain about the fact that Amity suspected Luz would be mad at her for "failing," and I feel like those people missed the point a little. It's not about Luz--of course Luz wouldn't be mad. It's about Amity, and the fact that even now Amity still has these deep-rooted insecurities that cloud her judgement
@aetriandimitri1903 жыл бұрын
This is something a lot of people sadly seemed to miss and thought Amity was constantly saying awesome girlfriend cause the show wanted to do victory laps. It was showing some serious and depressing trauma in the fact that due to how she was raised. Amity couldn't even see her relationship as something simple and to enjoy, she thought she had to be the very top and prove herself or else Luz would dump her. So when Hunter said the message meant "come back with results or we're done" it makes sense why she fell for it. Since we know Luz would never do that, and Amity knows she wouldn't, but Amity's brain was molded to think that way about things. So basically her saying "I am Luz's awesome girlfriend" isn't her just flexing, it's her trying to convince herself she won't be broken up with because she isn't perfect, and when it's called into question if she actually is an awesome girlfriend she freaks out and thinks irrationally, which is depressing as all hell

Brilliant LGBT+ representation aside, can we just appreciate the most realistic representation of a developing romantic relationship in any kind of media so far. Most relationships I've seen, even on the best movies or shows, fall into one of 2 categories: the people involved are basically predestined to end up together due to circumstances, selective introduction or forced writing, with the usual useless will-they-won't-they arcs that nobody falls for (ex: AtlA with Aang and Katara, B99 with Jake and Amy, any MCU movie that has the tiniest trace of a romantic subplot) or one of the characters goes to increasingly ludicrous shenanigans to eventually win over/ wear down their love interest (ex: TBBT with Leonard and Penny, Literally any Disney Channel show from the 2000's). None of that happens to people in real life who have feelings for each other. You know what does happen? Awkward silences, vague gestures, questioning EVERYTHING you say or do, before, after and while you're doing or saying it. For all of that alone, The Owl House owns a place in the media hall of fame and my heart for ever !!!

In my opinion, I think the feeling of the "bit rushed" portion is due to the timeline. People should recognize how much time actually passed within episodes and between episodes. There may also be pressure from Disney because Dana and the team knew that have to wrap up sooner than they wanted, so the have to make those timelines within and between episodes quick. For example, in Season 2, Episode 5, between the library incident to Luz getting Amity's job back, I don't think that can all happen in one afternoon. That would've taken at least some days for that to happen. In the meantime, Gus' events in that episode would've been done in one single day. Another example, between Season 2, Episode 8 (Hooty) and the latest one 9 (Eclipse Lake), that would've taken many days as well. Between the confession at the end of Ep 8. and the state therein at the beginning of Ep. 9, we have the following that have happened in between: 1) Gus and Willow now aware that Luz x Amity are official (I wondered how Luz and Amity broke the news?); 2) Amity now has a palisman (I wondered how she got that at their school?); and 3) Luz got sick and all of them got together in the Owl House (I wondered how it ended up like that?).

The "timeline" issue is definitely at its worst during season 1. Judging by their season one interaction, most would assume that Amity started to developed her crush in the "Lost in Language" episode which is her third interaction with Luz. There are two problems with this 1)though they more or less reconciled in their second interaction things still ended on a sour note and their third interaction isn't any better 2) the first season is meant to take place in the span of one summer(which is two months or less)and since there are 19 episodes this means one or two days pass offscreen at most (some episodes even lead directly into each other). The problem with the second point is after the "Lost in Language" episode their next interaction is in "Adventure in the Elements" which is 5 episodes later meaning they did not interact for a very significant chunk of time, which makes their friendly interactions in said episode (and the development of the crush)jarring to say the least.

I think it’s just that people are used to having the main relationship finally be confirmed at the end of the show. Some cartoons that come to mind are Avatar, Legend of Korra, She-Ra, Adventure Time, etc. In all of these shows the relationships are built up over the course of the whole show and are treated as an end goal, not as just another milestone within the character’s development, which is how TOH treats Lumity. It’s not bad, just different. Not rushed, just faster than people are used to

Ah yes, the old "it's rushed" argument. It's interesting that I see this so often when it comes to same-sex relationships, across so many shows. So either all these shows are rushing their relationships, or there's something else going on here. I find it especially glaring when the argument is used against Lumity, a ship where we've seen every stage of their development. Where we've had large chunks, even entire episodes of time, dedicated to their changing and growing relationship. Honestly, at this point, the second I see "it's rushed" I assume the person is just homophobic because they never have a good reason for actually thinking that. Anyway, this was a great video. Thanks for doing it, but it's a shame it has to be done at all.

@@unknownbystander8145 bro literally all you need to do is watch the video where there is objective evidence of why the relationship works well. episode 5 is the first spark where we see that amity isn't just a bitch but has values and her problems. The 7th episode is the one that more or less clears up the misunderstandings, in the 12th they are more or less friends and from there the crush develops in a natural and realistic way for two queer people. In my opinion you don't understand one thing, what we see on screen are not their only interactions in the series. TOH is a series that has always had quite fast story pace, so not everything is shown on the screen. Luz going to Amity's secret room, Azura's book club, the fact that in episode 12 to meet up at the market there will have been talks, the exchange of tamagotchi and many other things. The CRUCIAL NODES are shown in the episodes, those that lead the two characters to improve, mature and get to know each other better. I really don't understand how you can deny all this. The only thing that comes to mind is that you are not used to seeing homosexual representations and it seems rushed to you because intrinsically you don't expect a love development between two people of the same kind, probably if they had been male and female you wouldn't have had any doubts. The video seems to me to put everything in black and white.

Couples like Bughead from Riverdale are rushed, and then shilled by writers and shippers in hopes that people will ignore how toxic and dysfunctional they are. Lumity is not like that at all. We're treated to seeing both characters grow as people while gradually realizing the feelings they have for one another. And when they do get together, they're not displayed as perfect, still feeling awkward around each other because of course they are, this is something totally new for both of them. I cannot get over how a couple in a cartoon about witches and demons is so realistic and I love it.

Crushes are dragged out for 50 seasons and either "pay off" at the very end, or when the characters do get together their relationship doesn't grow or change at all. Getting with another person isnt the end or the story, it's more of the beginning. Being with someone lets you learn so many things about yourself, theirself, and just caring about another person. Luz and Amity aren't going to stop being blushy and nervous for a while, because becoming comfortable around your partner takes time. For me it's like this: crushes when you're a kid, lgbt+ or not, form SO quickly? Kids liking each other so fast feels really normal to me!!

I think part of why some people (WRONGLY!) call it rushed (aside from being conditioned to wait for the last second of the last episode for any lgbt relationship confirmation, i.e. being conditioned to accept the smallest amount of lgbt content possible) is because they see Luz's feelings in Escaping Expulsion and Through the Looking Glass Ruins as coming out of nowhere. And I see how they could make that mistake, she does go from completely oblivious to levels of disaster bi equal to Amity's level of disaster lesbian in basically one scene. But that's because that's just the moment Luz is finally recognizing feelings that have been there for a long time. In fact I think she's been attracted to Amity longer than Amity was attracted to Luz, pretty much from the very beginning. The arc is a little more subtle, but I think it's clear when you look at how actively and enthusiastically she pursues a friendship with Amity. We know Luz is not great at making friends, not having any at all on Earth. And if you look at the other people Luz gets close to on the Boiling Isles, she doesn't actually initiate the relationship with any of them. She only talks to Eda to get her Azura book back and then tries to run away, but has to work with Eda in order to get back home. She meets King through Eda. She only watches Willow from the bushes, interested to see her magic, until Willow accidentally drags Luz out over to her with her vines and then shows interest in Luz being human. And then she meets Gus through Willow. Once she spends time interacting with people, she ends up becoming friends with them, but she never initiates that interaction, and never would've gotten close to any of them if circumstances hadn't first forced them together. And then there's Amity, who fate honestly seems to be conspiring to keep from forming a relationship with Luz. And I don't just mean Amity not liking Luz bc of Luz humiliating her at school and the covenention. That might be what's focused on, but Amity actually causes even more trouble for Luz than the other way around. Luz gets Amity in trouble at school; Amity tries to have Luz dissected. Luz embarrasses Amity at the covention (in response to Amity's outright hostility I might add); Amity tries to force Luz to have to completely stop studying magic. Luz honestly has just as much right to be angry at Amity in Lost in Language as Amity is at her, but she's not. Instead, despite all that's happened, she's driven to form a friendship with Amity in a way that she's not been with any other person. But Luz kinda has a lot on her mind, having learned of Eda's curse before seeing Amity again in Covention, not to mention just the whole experience of adjusting to living in a brand new world where magic and monsters are real, all on top of just, ya know, the normal challenges of romance. So she doesn't realize at first that the reason she's so drawn to Amity is because she's romantically attracted to her. But Luz being the dramatic fantasy adventure story loving dork she is, Amity heroically rushing in at the last second to save her from certain death (and before anyone gets nitpicky, at the library and with Grom Amity was the one first in trouble, with Luz stepping in to save her, but the two ending up working together in both cases :P) is a perfect catalyst to help Luz finally recognize the feelings she's had all along.

6:33 Another thing I love about this scene is that there’s a double lie in it. 1. obv Amity isn’t doing it for extra credit she’s doing it because she wants to 2. this isn’t really a lie but Amity’s “don’t get your leggings in a bunch” jab at Luz doesn’t make any sense, because they’re both wearing leggings. I could only imagine the goal is to insult Luz’s wearing of leggings but Amity is just like, really bad at being mean. This seems unintentional but i’m pretty sure it’s deliberate subtext because in “I Was a Teenage Abomination” amity has her abomination draw a star on Willow’s head and says “Aww, it’s like mine! Except much smaller and more meaningless” Amity notes that Willow’s star is smaller even though hers and Willow’s are visibly the same size. TLDR: Amity uses insults in ways that apply both to her and the subject of the insult on repeated occasions, as foreshadowing to the fact that she’s putting up a front and failing at it miserably.

Lumity ain’t rushed. Have you ever seen a WLW relationship go slow? Jokes aside, they’re also kids. Kids don’t slow burn in real life. The longest part is working up the courage to ask your crush out, actually getting a crush takes 5 seconds
@ellienas51793 жыл бұрын
I agree the only reason it appears rushed is because they didn't do that dumb trope most TV shows do of that 'will-they-won't-they' crap which can drag on on for three freaking seasons. They had a crush on each other so boom they got together, no drama or love triangles or any of that.

Usually, they would become "just friends" after Luz tried her best to become her friend. But they took it to a whole next level. And I frickin love it.

There is something even more important about the scene where Amity admits that Luz isn't a bully. It's that Amity said, "I haven't been the nicest witch either.". It shows us that Amity sees Luz as more of an equal. And she also acknowledges Luz's biggest aspiration. (That Amity understands)

@401Sakura2 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for others but the reason I felt it *seemed* rushed was not from a plot perspective but from a time perspective. For me, personally, it's really hard to get a sense for how much time is passing in the demon realm; how long has Luz been there? I feel like I don't have a good grasp on that and it felt like Luz hadn't been there long enough to form such a close bond (for what it's worth I felt that about her friendship with Willow and Gus as well). After it was revealed that V had been going to summer camp for Luz and the summer was basically over (so presumably 3-ish months had passed), Lumity felt more natural and not rushed at all.

Fantastic analysis! I can see how some might see the relationship as progressing fast just due to how much takes place in each episode, but it’s not rushed for that exact reason. The pacing lends to the character development Amity has and the growing bond she and Luz share. You’ve done such an amazing job explaining it 10/10 :D

in Other TV shows a Man and woman can hate each other, have no kind scenes at all, have hated each other for many episodes but in one random scene they kiss in the middle of an argument and everyone love it but with this it’s “rushed”
@unknownbystander81453 жыл бұрын
That example is way to extreme to be used as a counterargument. I personally don't know any show that have the romance that you describe, but I think it's safe to assume that those are Adult Sitcoms or just Sitcoms in general.
@filmfreak19943 жыл бұрын
I was so surprised and incredibly pleased that the show moved past Amity being the typical bully character as fast as it did. And even if she comes around on Luz in about three episodes, it's still paced well enough that we get some buffer time between these three episodes and enough buffer time where Amity can explore her feelings about Luz and become the disaster gay we've come to know and love. I've never gotten people who say Amity's feelings or her arc in general are too rushed because the fact that they got to the good shit as quick as they did made me love the show even more.
@unknownbystander81453 жыл бұрын
After Amity's introduction there only 6 episode of them interacting together, meaning there are 12 episode in total where they don't. And even if you add season 2's episodes to the count that still only only adds up to 10 interactions before they get together, which is definitely not enough especially considering how much gap there is between each interaction, particularly between their third and fourth one. It didn't have to take multiple seasons but it should have had at least one full season dedicated to developing their relationship, cause as it stands it's not enough.

This video does a good explanation of this relationship. And while I haven't been keeping track of The Owl House, I see this as something amusing as it is interesting. I have respect to everyone. So seeing this relationship expanding itself out is like, "woah. Okay, now you have my attention!"

I think Luz actually had crushes on other people before Amity, because Luz was talking to the echo mouse about some other time or times she confessed to some unknown person or persons and was rejected for being too cheesy. So Luz wanted to try and be different in her confession since this was the first time that somebody may like her back.

As someone in a same sex relationship, i can tell you this did feel natural to me i related to amity so hard. *sans the initial rivalry and classism* The way i saw her crush on luz is actually similar to how i felt when i was crushing before i told my crush. And it took her a while to just come out with it, as it did with me.

Do people forget that even ifs it only season two that the time in the boiling isles has passed to about a couple of months. So… they say it’s rushed possible based on the placements in the series but if we look at the facts, actions, and dialogue that they given us then I think people wouldn’t think it’s rushed. I think it’s been presented pretty beautifully. I’ll support this ship until the series comes to an end. 😌💜

the best thing abt the owl house moving at its own pace is that it allows the show to focus on more things, rather than dragging out luz and amity's relationship - by establishing that they WILL get together early on, and that they ARE together now, it opens the floor for other characters to shine separate from just luz and amity - like eda's curse and how she copes with it, king's familial troubles, even the emperor's coven and hunter get some insights into what they're doing. it treats all its characters like they're important, and equal. i love how quickly it moves and how it doesn't handhold the audience through its plot. to borrow a metaphor from dana, the stories and characters feel tightly knit together

Also, part of the reason I feel some think the development of Luz and Amity’s relationship is rushed is that we’ve largely been primed by previous shows that this sort of thing needs to take FOREVER to develop. Not just with LGBTQ romantic relationships, but romantic relationships of any kind. And personally I find it refreshing. Two characters who are so clearly in love with each other declaring that love without spending three or four seasons beating around the bush about it
@StoryTeller7962 жыл бұрын
I would probably feel a little justified in giving Odalia a riddle puzzle box, and I'll also join in the pile of people who like this relationship because it's so sweet. Lumity is so healthy for both of their egos and mental health. "It can be cruel, poetic or blind. But when it's *denied*, it may be *violence* you may find". "If you are a Just Parent, please do not lie. What is the price for your neglectful mind"?
@PinkGoblin3 жыл бұрын
Another reason this isn't rushed is because, unlike straight couples and ships in a lot of Disney's works, they both don't catch feelings at the same time. Amity was so emotionally touch starved, i guess you could say, that once she found someone who cared, she fell in love, because it was the first time someone had genuinely cared. Luz, on the other hand, has had crushes before hand, and her life wasn't as 'up tight' as Amity's was. This led for a not immediate realization, because she's had people there for her, and instead was a type of love, where she slowly started to feel things. Its like a balance scale, the Amity side of the scale has had the weight in it for a while, but soon enough, on the Luz side of the scale, the weight was placed there to. Their dynamic makes me so happy, their perfect. As Hooty said, "They're adorable, and deserve all the happiness!"

The reason to why I think people are saying Lumity is rushed is because for some reason when it comes to Lgbtq+ relationships (Mostly same sex romances from what I've seen), people are either overtly critical because it's gay, or just straight up attack the ship as a result of underlying homophobia. This can be shown within the RWBY fandom as well, trashing the ship Bumbleby (that also happens to be a ship between two women) and calling it rushed when it isn't even cannon yet.

14:40 That scene is so adorable. It's also great that the nervousness and awkwardness in both of them is so utterly obvious, yet it just manages to be a fully sweet moment, no cringe or awkwardness on the side of the audience (at least for me). I'm honestly so used to seeing romantic scenes and just feeling like just watching it is so awkward I just want to look away that not having that sense is just great. One of the few times in a show where the writers managed to sell me fully on a romantic relationship.
@tommydiaz-millan24383 жыл бұрын
I don't feel Lumity is rushed. It's been very executed very well and Amity's redemption arc went very smoothly for me and I like that. Adventures in the Elements isn't mentioned much in here because it is where she cared about Luz's safety and not being angry about her wand and siblings being taken. Oh yeah and Dana Terrace already still made it clear when making the show, she didn't want much love triangles happening since romance isn't a focus much in this series.
