Eric. Jonathan here. Great pod cast my friend. Keep it up. This is like food for us... yes this bike is REALLY well made....Japanese level design and quality.... to be nit picky I found a few things on the engineering side of things I would have done differently but just small things... for instance, the battery tray, which holds the whole weight of the battery is just resting on 4 m6 bolts...I've calculated the shear strength and it's well within limits but it's something that I would have designed in a little nub or ledge into the frame to help distribute that load...

I love that belt drive concept, but I don't care about colors. I like my Luna Fatty Wolf mid drive with dirt on it. Glossy or Matt black will be irrelevant once in use.

Eric always disses Homologation but the Road legal version in Europe L1e-X is the perfect surron for us this side of the pond .. allows visiting local trails in Europe without needing to transport it or getting in trouble with police...don't ever stop this model!! Luna only bothered about US market which have different laws.

Seeing the Sur-Ron guys - now we know why the bikes perfectly fit short riders. How about a couple more frame options; a medium for 5'9'-6'1" and a large frame for over 6'1"? Then many would buy two or three at a time so they don't have to ride alone.

1:05:00.... I used the exact same chainas the surron, 420, on my custom built dirtbikes using a 160cc YX motor putting out about 10-13bhp... and I'd snap chains, so had to bump up to 428.... the surron at 5hp could possibly, possibly use a strong BMX chain but still way too sketchy for consumer market. in my experience, bike chains can take about 5hp max before you start running into stretching and snapping issues.

Would luna cycles ever consider selling custom batterypacks with 21700 cells instead of 18650 cells? By doing some light math you see that the basic samsung 21700's gives 8,1% more power, and thats without changing anything besides the cells inside the casing, if youre willing to make the frame an inch or two larger i bet you could probably get upwards of 2,5kwh or even 3kwh

Cody Yes as it’s a false economy to purchase poor batteries as they inevitably fail and you end up buying twice. It’s all relative to the cost of the machine, if somebody is happy to spend big on the machine then paying extra for the batteries and parts it deserves makes sense.

I do know of one company competing with sur ron. Onyx mopeds. They are still young but the have a 6000w geared hub motor in the rear wheel, and a 72 volt 23 ah battery. I will let you guys know if it sucks, got one slated to be delivered next month. 6 month waiting.

I must say, I do like how this guy holds his suppliers accountable and asks them the tough questions. I've got two B-52 Bombers your welcome to test, compare and contrast against the Sur-Ron, if you are ever in the Bay Area? Also Tesla uses a proprietary cell developed jointly with Panasonic and they are specifically not the same as the GA's in that bike battery.

Tesla has used PF and GA cells in their past and now uses both 18650 GA and a new 21700 cell which is available to any battery builder on the open market now. I forget what the name of the cell is... maybe a 40t? but it is widely available to battery builders. We do not use it because it is a very low power cell.... but very energy dense... perfect for a car not so good for an ebike.

No mention of the Harley Davidson bait-and-switch. If you want to back up your claims that the Sur-Ron is "better" well get on with it then and do an homage to the Alta Motors drop test and racing PR with Red Bull and other events where Alta Motors featured and did well. Just get a handelbar riser with generous rise handelbar and you can always get the pegs lowered easily yourself or aftermarket parts will no doubt be made I've got an lmx p2 I've added a 3 in riser bar with mine and its transformed the handling and ride I'm 6ft 1 no need to drop the pegs I don't own a sur Ron but my friend does its quite heavy but it is got a good motor with torque I wouldn't trade my lmx for any sur Ron but you'd be surprised it's well worth 4000 I'd like this ludicrous version no doubt

The noise of the chain is nice! it makes up for the lack of "motor noise" coming from ICE engines, even thou electric motor still whistles. Plus it's actually safer to make a little noise when you're on the road!

Based on all the video I've seen, they really need to consider upping the size of this bike and consider squeezing in another battery. This bike just looks so tiny under every single rider I've seen on it. It's smaller than my mountain bike by several inches and all the riders look so cramped on it. If it was even just a few inches taller and longer I feel like you could easily fit a much larger or second battery in it and the rider ergonomics would be better.

Hey Luna Team, I've just seen the Ludicrous model on the shop and it looks kick ass! I am really excited to order my own Sur Ron X soon as I am moving and it will become my main form of local transportation. I am pretty new to the eBike/EV world and I was just wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing as to why the Sur Ron is superior compared to other bikes like the Onyx RCR? At around the same price point it has slightly more range and is about 10-15mph faster. I really do want a Sur Ron as that was my primary decision, but I'm only slightly interested in the Onyx for it's higher top end. So now I'm just having a tough time deciding between the two. I'd really appreciate any input, thank you.

Would like to see some of the following on the bike. Better Tires with thicker tubes, preferably Shinko 244 Rear / Maxxis Front and Michelin Tubes, Better spoke and hub setup (spokes way to thick), Larger wheel Size, Higher Rise Bars Like a Protaper 3” Rise, As mentioned before more power using better cells (Better Power, Range, Upgradability), Higher tooth Sprocket for climbing, Better Brakes (Thicker and Larger Rotor, Bigger Caliber, better pads), Ability to adjust height in the rear, Better padded seat, front rash guard protection, Like the Rock-shock upgrades, but perhaps an option to a better rear shock. Some type of audible warning before battery gets to certain levels before it defaults into a ep mode (beneficial to those racing or riding hard), a quarter throttle assembly (stock throttle is just way too much), Additions for accessories - some type of system to carry things like panniers or other items, maybe some type of trailer. Overall I see a future with many steady improvements to the product. I see many things that can be added or upgraded to give a better bike overall with minimal costs or upgrades in manufacturing all the while providing a better experience to the end user. I am considering using two bike to go along with my vehicle in an overlanding setup. Would end up probably talking to Sur-Ron on some type of collaboration into this market for our push from Alaska down to Baja Mexico using the bikes in places to explore where vehicles cannot go. For example in Oklahoma at Black Mesa one can either walk 15miles to the dinosaur tracks or use a bicycle to get there, no vehicle access. Being a combat disabled veteran post 9/11 I could neither walk this far with my injuries or even stand to ride both ways on a pedal bike. With using a ebike suck as this with an ability to carry some small supplies it would make a trip such as this simple and is such a large untapped market. One in which others are trying to enter but with price points msrp off at least double and without the full capabilities of the sur-ron. Anyhow liked the video and would to speak later on about this project we have coming up with our new overland build and launching our media channels to document our Overland Travel through parts of the Pan American Hwy from Alaska down into the Baja of Mexico and possibly further on the mainland of Mexico, (some concerns with security, fuel availability, and medical concerns going further). He asks the question why are off-road bikes so big (tall). Seems obvious to me. Ground clearance & suspension travel. My Yamaha YZ has 14" of ground clearance the Sur-Ron only 8". And all full size off-road / MX motorcycles have 12-13" of suspension travel. I also have a 2010 Zero MX. It has the same seat height as a Kawasaki KX100 or any big wheel Mini. You can't compete at the pro level without the ground clearance & suspension travel of a modern off-road / MX motorcycle. The Alta is a good example of that.

RST were always the cheap option, never as good. Rockshox have a huge history, and besides a few moments where they weren't quite so good, they're definitely a leading suspension manufacturer. Ditch that stem and use a direct mount stem, and you'll be winning.

Love watching the tech upgrades. One rule I live by is that "Only the rich can afford poor quality." Keep up the good work guys. Your an inspiration. I would like to get into building E-quads. :) That would be awesome. I see the future of all our motor sports having an electric option. E-quads, E-snowmobiles, E-jet ski's. You name it. In 10 years it will the norm. Love your video's. Currently building an E-chopper motorcycle. It is my first build, and I am learning so much. I am using real motorcycle parts, springer fork, Harley wheels and tires, motorcycle hard tail frame, and whatever I need to make it real. Wish me luck. I will get my motor parts and batteries from Luna Cycle. I just need a little education. But I go to car and bike shows all the time and it will be fun to show off. Everyone I talk to loves e-bikes. This thing will be incredible when I'm done. I've built many Harley's and done show winning paint jobs on many bikes and a few cars and trucks. My ebike adventure is exciting and I'm motivated.
