aside from just the race issues i don't understand hollywood's obsession with sexing up adaptations of children's media, we saw this same thing happen with the percy jackson movies. not only does it alienate the core audience (children and families) but it leaves us with something that doesn't appeal to families and children and also doesn't appeal to teens and adults. so who is this kind of stuff being made for? atla's success is proof that you can make intelligent shows directed at children which are still entertaining to adult and teen audiences

This happens to Indigenous people a lot it's really sad. Another example is Kelsey Asbille in the show Yellow Stone. She's an Asian woman who used to go by Kelsey Chow but changed her name and falsely claimed native heritage to play an Indigenous character. The fact that Indigenous representation is already so small, and people still take the few roles that are available to them makes it even more upsetting to me.

It reminds me of the casting of the actress who plays Flora in Fate. I saw only positive comments about the actress being Latina. But in Latin America, she would be considered white. I don't mean that being white nullifies her identity as a Latina. Or that any indigenous avatar actor is less indigenous for having light skin. But it bothers me to see people acting as if they haven't noticed that diversity in Hollywood is always light-skinned.

I was thinking the same thing. There are literally native people the same complexion as Katara and Sokka. Hollywood loves to get Poc as light as possible. It's sad. After that dumpster fire of a movie I had a shred of hope we'd have a heavily melanated Katara. Especially being that she's seen as sweet and the love interest. Girls and women with darker skin are often portrayed as aggressive. It would have been nice for them to show representation deading those harmful stereotypes, but I guess that's too much to ask 😒

Indigenous representation is extremely rare itself, with only a few types of media that actually tells indigenous stories without being racially stereotypical and not playing into the whole “cowboys and indians” setting. So seeing people who aren’t apart of the community want a grab at something we have so little of is frustrating to deal with on its own. I want to mention yes, pale natives exists, brown natives, dark natives, mixed natives, lightskin natives, etc. we do come in all different shades, but even so, they all deserve their own proper representation, since some are seen a lot less than others.

Someone commenting "you Taylor Lautner'd us" on his instagram made me laugh... so true. I had no hope for this from the beginning, hollywood and netflix especially has always ruined stuff like this, and when Michael and Bryan walked off I knew it wasn't gonna go well... I think I felt a small glimpse of hope when we heard about Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh (and some of the other good casting choices) but urgh I still think even if they did the casting 100% right, it's probably still going to be bad for other reasons, ESPECIALLY the fact that they reportedly are wanting to make it more ~edgy sexy and adult~ which is just terrible for a series which is so wholesome and beautiful and originally centers on a bunch of kids/teenagers like that's so weird to age them up and make it SeXy... you don't need to make things gritty and dark and sexual to make them enjoyable to adults, the original series is HIGHLY enjoyable for kids and adults alike because of the phenomenal writing and topics of politics and trauma and family and various social divides... it just feels like using ~edgy~ elements is a cheap cop-out to make up for less effective writing and characterization.

This is frustrating when some full blooded indigenous people can't get enrolled into a tribe because they are of a bunch of different tribes and none are 1/4. It's not our fault we've been so displaced... But why take advantage when these things are for natives? I'm 1/4 apache, 1/4 navajo, and half german (to my knowledge since I have yet to get blood tested) and I look white. I feel verrrry hesitant about taking advantage of the services for natives and just don't mark my nativeness since I've never even been on a reservation. It's weird and dishonorable to lie about that for me...

Yeah, I come from a somewhat similar stance on this. I think it’s actually pretty likely he wasn’t lying about his ancestry, I honestly think as someone who’s grandpa resigned his Osage Native tribal status when he moved out here to the west coast, it would be super cool to have a local community here to be able to better participate in the culture and practices I feel this connection with, IF there’s some cool thing like that for him/his local community that’s awesome!…. But… If it were me I’d feel pretty uncomfortable taking that sort of role. I’m 1/16th Osage, and like 1/8th Swiss Austrian, as well as a fair bit Swedish, and I’m VERY white+white passing. One of my sister’s looks more stereotypically native, with the higher cheekbones and the super dark brown eyes (from the other side of the family with the Swedish genes, oddly enough). I could probably go get a tan and dye my hair back to my natural color and maybe someone would believe my indigenous ancestry. But it would just feel a little icky to play that as a part in a tv show. I mean I’m pretty anti identity-politics/specifically not in favor of liberal identity politics (which always feel a little racist and co-opted to me) and I’m in favor of abolishing the concept of race and having a more global ancom society personally, But right now the reality of the system were in it’s pretty rough for representation in the media. And it would have been cool to see some more of these characters represented more aligned with the real world cultures they’re based on.

@@chibi-bombyx I agree that in an ideal world where natives weren't abused and displaced there would be no need to split hairs when it comes to native ancestry. Sometimes blood quantum feels uncomfortable to have to deal with like we're dogs. But the fact of reality is that roles for natives should be given to natives since there is already such a disparity in opportunities for native actors. They keep making roles for natives and give it to white people. There's even been a history of really weird fd up racist depictions mocking indigenous people and red face. I used to work at an indigenous museum in Chicago and the amount of white people claiming to be Cherrokee would surprise a lot of people. Many would claim to have a "Cherokee princess" as an ancestor which DOES NOT EXIST by the way. Whereas when actually natives came to visit, they never flaunted their status, and it would deeply sadden me when many white people interacted with them because they would treat them like children in a way or act like they were an artifact.

i am so frustrated with hollywood's insistence on casting the palest possible poc and then going, aren't you happy we gave you representation! like no ! I think it's a little problematic to bring up his family's political beliefs as proof of him not being a poc bc poc and native people are not a monolith and have varying opinions on politics (not saying that I agree with these politics, i don't). I also think it's worth noting the US government's history of blood quantum and separating native children from their families. This means a lot of people have native ancestry that they don't have a way to legally prove because they don't meet blood requirements (something we don't do for any other race/ethnicity). Plus there are tribes that aren't recognized by the government and therefore are people who have native ancestry that aren't able to claim it legally. considering the US government's history of racism and genocide regarding indigenous people's should we trust their authority over what actual native people are saying? In Ian’s case, Cherokee is a nation so for him to claim nationality to a tribe and then have members of the tribe confirming he isn't a part of it seems very suspicious to me, and if he is pretending to be native and is taking a part from a native actor that's horrible considering there is already so little positive native representation in the media. idk the fact that ian or netflix hasn't said anything about this bothers me and if there's already this much controversy before production i can't imagine what the show is going to look like...

Personally as someone who is actually half native (Athabaskan) and definitely white passing, I don't get why people lie about this stuff?? Let actual natives have native roles because at the end of the day, non-white people are still till this day discriminated against and representation is still pretty tight (although representation is slowly getting better, some of it is trash.) All in all, if you are obviously 100% white, do not claim to be something you actually aren't. In the end, it hurts the community you are pretending to be in.

You can want them to cast a fully native american person, but saying doesn't "look poc" enough is just rude. Also, the Cherokee nation he's enrolled not being officially recognized by the government does not mean he's not indigenous? Also why are we all just watching one tiktok video and collectively deciding it's all 100% true? Even if it is true that he lied, my point still stands that mixed people "look white" all the time and it doesn't make them any less of a person of color than a mixed person that does "look poc" Edit: I forgot to add this, but if he isn't lying, then he doesn't need to provide any explanation. He doesn't owe anyone proof of his ethnicity

I'm mixed and I was gonna say this as well. I'm white passing thought people can tell im "not from here", although they can never accurately guess where I'm actually from, and I hate when people expect us to look a certain way because otherwise we're "fake claiming". I mean my dad looks sort of ambiguous but more white but his brothers look almost fully asian and have darker skin. Being white passing doesn't mean one's more obviously non white family members just dissapear or that one's culture or background they were raised in dissapears. I find trying to determine if someone's lying about their heritage or trying to figure out their "blood quantum" just absurd.

I suppose there's a very different approach in thought process here in Australia; To say that an Indigenous person doesn't look indigenous because they pass as white is a very offensive thing to say due to how our government tried to essentially 'dilute' their culture and ethnicity. Here, you'll see many shades of First Nation's people and that doesn't make anyone less 'indigenous' (Insane thing to say). So, to see this video and hear what some people are saying about his identity and ethnicity seems so bizzare and downright like erasure.

you know with big projects like this, the actors usually have no idea what they’re auditioning for. ian likely had no idea he was auditioning for sokka, and probably didn’t have any idea he would get the role. assuming someone would intentionally lie about their race to get cast is a big accusation. i am very sure he’s not out here rubbing his hands together like “hehehe let me lie about being native so i can steal this part from a full native actor 😈”. like seriously does that sound like something someone would do? it’s so totally clear to me why he got casted, his face shape and voice are so close, honestly if i closed my eyes i might think it was cartoon sokka talking. also he totally killed it with his acting, him and zuko stole the show. stop treating this fairly young actor as if he’s the face of white americans’ oppression of natives.

I wouldn't say its impossible for someone to do something like that; however, you are probably right that he didn't lie about anything regarding race/background to get cast. I was REALLY hoping to see D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai casted... He did amazing in his role on Reservation dogs and I feel like he would be perfect for the role.. I also agree with the whole "picking the lightest poc possible" thing. So many people who wanted to see D'Pharaoh play the role were responded to with rhetoric like "he's too dark to play Sokka".. SOKKA AIN'T EXACTLY LIGHT!! It's just really sad. Growing up as a native, the absolute best representation I had was from a movie where the main character was a yellow horse (Spirit of the cimarron) !! Everything else was villainized racist caricatures of my people. I'm really hoping new generations will grow up able to look at the screen and see themselves as a princess or the hero of the story. :')

Absolutely disgusting (and quite frankly racist) to hound the actor and demand "proof" of his heritage. Firstly, because he's very clearly NOT 100% ethnically white - just look at his facial features. Look at his bone structure. Sorry, but you just need to glance at him for 0.2 of a second to see that he's not white. I'm seriously doubting whether the people complaining he looks white have ever seen a native American person before. It's so ludicrous it's honestly sad, and the number of people calling him white and then mocking his facial features - his eye shape and chin shape, for some reason - makes me think they just wanted an excuse to be racist without being accused of being racist. And please, I'm begging you, don't get your information solely from a loud few people on tiktok and twitter who want to cancel actors. Listen to actual native people on this one - MANY native people are not federally recognised, or are part of 'illegitimate' tribes. The reason being the forced migration and eradication of native communities. Thanks to the treatment of native people throughout the last few hundred years, many native people have no ties to their community, or records of their heritage other than tradition and family stories. To gatekeep and deny them their heritage because of this is just racist. So what if there are some white people who take advantage of these 'illegitimate' tribes? I'd rather put up with a minority of white people making up stories about being native than deny a majority of actual native people access to their identity and their spaces. Many native people have also pointed out to these 'fans' that the concept of having to have your native identity recognised by the invading government in order to be considered legitimate to internet sleuths is frankly disgusting.

I am mixed race but I'm not white passing, meanwhile some "full blooded" (BQ is racist but for the sake of this conversation) Natives look "like just plain old white people." Indigenous is not a look. I totally agree that white/white coded/white passing (really whatever you wanna call it idc) Natives are constantly chosen for opportunities over Natives of color, but that doesn't make white Natives less Indigenous...? I just think the intricacies of this conversation, especially when it comes to "fake tribes" should be handled by Natives? I have my own suspicions about the tribe but I think accusations without proof do more harm to Natives as a whole than good. Some people don't believe the Lumbee tribe is legit, for example, because of Black ancestry. It's just a slippery slope. The best we can do is leave it to genealogists and other professionals. Speculation is dangerous.

This is exactly what I’m thinking!! I did like this video, but questioning percentage of native blood is exactly what those white colonizers did when they took over their land. Even if that actor isn’t native, saying “50% native” or any other percentage will always rub me the wrong way and will always be wrong. I feel like a good portion of the conversation on Twitter are natives calling out bullshit, although that app loves to drown out POC voices. I agree, if you aren’t that actors doctor or native yourself-sit this one out on trying to make a trillion Twitter posts. Netflix will probably recast anyways, but who the hell knows. I feel like there is substantial proof of him lying.. but it isn’t my place to say he’s without a doubt lying. @coffee cats Yes as a racialized Native I am aware there are certain features associated with certain Natives from certain areas. But my epicanthic folds and flat nose are not typically what people think of when they think of Native Americans either, it's always dark skin and high cheekbones with angular noses. As it turns out, different people will have different ethnic features, so no, there is no one Indigenous look. Some tribes were paler than others. Some had white ancestors marry in but it doesn't make them less Indigenous. Blood quantum is racist and assuming you can tell who is or isn't Native by appearance alone is racist. All that aside. Personally I think the actual issue here is casting someone so incredibly light skinned, who is not Inuit, for a dark skinned Inuit role.

this is a completely diff convo tho...like this actor is deadass white. and white passing native americans have white privilege. not to mention issues with colorism within the native community (remember that tiktok trend where light skinned native americans were mocking darker skinned ones for looking burnt?) I think shifting this convo to the oppression of white passing natives is bullshit. this is about the lack of representation for native americans and brownface. at the end of the day a white passing native is going to be treated white...trying to act like they are victims is bs. the girl that plays katara isn't brown either, so let's no act like white passing natives are under represented when most native representation is done by white passing or white mixed natives.

I kinda don’t understand why it’s so hard to have an open casting in like Canada and/ or Greenland where most people with inuit backgrounds and/ or inuit tribes live today or something so people who are supposed to play the roles of katara and sokka and the rest of the water tribes and maybe just don’t have a chance to travel by plane to go to a casting or don’t have a big following on social media and therefore won’t get recognition that easily still have the chance to play these characters. Like there are tons of yet unkown great children and people there who can act AND deserve a chance to represent these characters! I mean Netflix definitely has the money! And in general .. wouldn’t it make sense to AT LEAST make sure the characters who are supposed to play siblings have the same background? And at least try to cast kids who have at least a few slight similar features so they‘d actually look like they’re siblings ? come on… that’s just lazy ..

As someone who's half Asian half white I can say that the actor definitely doesn't look 100% white to me. Maybe he's not Cherokee, but I don't believe he's fully white either, he's got to have some Native or other non-white ancestry. Most of my cousins and family friends are half white half Asian and a lot of them look even more white than he does, some even with blonde hair and light eyes.
