Gary too he is real shy that's why he stands in the background so much. Gary and Allen were best of friends and they used to practice together in Allen's bedroom every day. It has been said many times that they could switch their position on the guitar and no one could tell the difference. That's how much they grew in that room. I was there on the night of the crash I only live 5 miles from it and stood on that wet country road at 8 yrs old while my daddy talked to our friend and sheriff about helping but he said they had plenty so we went home. It was the next day when we found out who had crashed. I got a guitar that Christmas and wore out 3 of their cassettes with fingers bleeding playing along.

Hats off to Gary Rossington, as an original member , he has never forgotten about where and who "Lynyard Skynyard " came from. Ronnie, Gary, Allen, Ed, Leon, Artiamuiss , Billy. I really respect Gary Rossington for his respect for his friends, and bandmates. He has always given respect to all of them, and knew that without them , there would never have been "Lynyard Skynyard ", he has always given respect to all of their fans, always thanking them for all of their success. This man is known worldwide for his phenomenal guitar work, and never have I seen where he was conceited or obnoxious to anyone, alot of waylesser artist's sure have. And often do. He knows that through God , his friends and fans, he was blessed with success. I'm proud to say that I was lucky enough to get to see them in concert a couple of times before tragedy struck them, a devastating end to what was just beginning. Through their awesome music, "Lynyard Skynyard " will live on .....Always.

Allen Collins never truly got over the crash I believe he had a lot of survivor guilt the others probably did too bu then losing his wife Kathy during childbirth that was another blow he lost the child too then he got in a wreck later with a new girlfriend and she died so he had that on him and he was severely injured as seen at the tribute concert as sad as his death was to the people that love him especially his parents his death was almost a merciful end because he was suffering so much by then I mean not just emotionally but he was in a wheelchair and I believe he was paralyzed from the chest down ? thats no way to live and he died of aspiration pneumonia which means he choked on something and got Pneumonia and died I believe he was being fed through a tube correct me if I am wrong please but I feel so sorry for the guy but now he is in Heaven and he is whole again they all are

They are. They were one of the absolute most talented rock bands of all time, of any genre. RVZ was a gritty poet, and the musicianship was absolutely fantastic across the board. In any other band, any one of their four guitarists (yes, four - Rossington, Collins, King early and Gaines later - and that's not counting Rickey Medlocke who was with them briefly and is outstanding as well) would have been a star, but they each had their role in part of the greater whole and together were stunning.

A few yrs ago the local Harley dealership had an event and the entertainment was a cousin of Ronnie's (I think his name was Jimmy). They shamelessly tried to pass him off as Ronnie.

Unfortunately this happens a lot when celebrities die unexpectedly and without a will. The same thing happened with Dale Earnhardt when he passed. He started DEI with the intentions of his son Dale jr. Taking over the company one day. When he died tragically in 2001 his wife Teresa got everything and would not give Dale jr. Controlling interest in the business. Jr in turn left and Teresa ran DEI into the ground.. unfortunate but a reality

I think maybe johnny stayed in the background and let ronnie's widow judy and ronnie's daughters take the lead. It really annoys and pisses me off what people say about the band and especially johnny. Nobody ever said he was trying to take his brothers place or to imitate ronnie. If you knew any of the history you would know johhny talked it over with his parents and made sure they and the remaining band members were all ok with the band getting back together. No band other than zz top has all their members for 40 plus years. Is any other band given as much grief as lynyrd skynyrd for having a different front man. Are all these other bands now "tribute" bands because the front man is no longer there. I think not. Why in hell cant people be grateful that after that horrific plane crash that the survivors and johnny wanted to continue playing the words penned by ronnie van zant. I think its the best gift all of them could give ronnie. Gary told johnny once when he wouldn't or couldn't sing freebird " ronnie was a song writer and a singer, he didnt write these songs to never be sung again" Be grateful that they give us that. Ok rant over

Sad to know that Gary Rossington and Artimus Pyle are the only classic members still alive. Edit: Since I know someone will bring it up Rickey Medlocke and Greg Walker were pre-crash members too and are still alive, but they were only in the band for about a year and only appear on some demos and outtakes, and never performed on a studio album before the crash hence they aren't considered "classic members", but if you wanna count them as pre-crash members then that's fine.

Pre-crash and original are two totally different things. Artimus was NOT an original. He replaced Bob Burns who was the original drummer. Ricky Medlock came on the scene several years AFTER they formed LS. The original members were: Van Zant, Rossington, Collins, Burns, Langston.

Umm- Gary wasn't running anywhere from that crash- he had many broken bones, including his pelvis... I believe you're thinking of Artemis. Ronnie and Steve died instantly on impact, there was nothing anyone could do. If you're gonna hate someone, at least do it for real reasons.

With only two original members in the band some people say they’re just a tribut band to the original.

Ed King came in after the band got going and left before ✈️ 💥 that fateful day. But in that time he contributed a lot to Skynyrd. He brought a Fender Strat into a Gibson heavy crew and came up with that main lick to Sweet Home Alabama. Ed also wrote the riff to Saturday Night Special. And I’m sure there’s more, but those 2 are definitely Ed King riffs.
