While at Best Buy. I ran a piano sampler instrument through an apple midi loop. It was an an 2019 13” MacBook Pro. It ran over 48 tracks. With a buffer size of 128. At that time I was fairly impressed. But M1 is the real deal.

Need a DJ-centric version of this type of analysis. I can confirm that at least Rekordbox 6, although not officially supported, works well on M1. I have Pioneer DJ's DDJ-FLX6 controller, and DDJ-XP1 sub-controller; both are only USB bus-powered, but work fine on my M1 MBP. Now my DDJ-1000 is somewhat shelved, waiting for official driver support.

What can't this guy do?!😂 Excellent video as always and the one I had been waiting for personally as a LPX user. This seems an amazing option if I needed something right now but my mac mini 2012 quad core i7 is still hanging in there (just) so I think I will wait for the 'pro' line of silicon with great excitement. And you are certainly right with plugin companies being slow to support OS updates.....! Look forward to the next video and Happy New Year!!

I disagree with the notion that the average M1 user would use GarageBand over Logic Pro. Just because these are entry level Macs doesn’t mean that owners are just going to use entry level software. Since they are more than powerful enough to run pro software very well, it doesn’t matter if they are entry level or not.

I literally bought an M1 macbookpro 13 to use Logic. Once I STARTED messing with the M1 Garageband and realized all my plugins run perfectly, I decided to just use gband. Anyway I got the Mac mini and than realized I did not do enough upfront research. But I have to say, luckily my workflow for what I do works great. Had some minor issues setting up my development environment but after some googling was able to get it working. Great machine, I got the 16gb version. So before you buy, definitely do you research. BTW this channel did a great job covering the things that were important for me. Lol. I bought my Mac mini fist and than watched these videos to confirm my purchase. You should probably watch the videos first. But after using my Mac mini for a months I am really satisfied with my purchase. PS beware of some Midi keyboards.... my old trusty Edirol PCR500 needs an app to program the sliders, knobs and switches, and that didn't survive Catalina, let alone Big Sur M1. And some of the software associated with my Allen and Heath QS-16, namely the DAW control app from A&H still hasn't been certified for Catalina, although it does actually work. Caveat Emptor, they say, so ALWAYS check to see if drivers/mixer apps etc are compatible on the manufacturers website first!

Geekers, I purchased the M1 Air for the occasional off-campus, on-holiday music production. But rather than Logic, I do Studio One. It fits my aesthetic and workflow nicely. It runs under Rosetta on the Air and seems stable enough. Using the obligatory dock (Belkin Thunderbolt 3), I patch into many a toy including a Presonus Faderport 8 (as seen on TV) and a Behringer UMC404HD USB audio interface. Am I going too geekoid here? Whatever. Anyway, the Behringer clubs the CPU monitor in Studio One into absolute submission the minute they connect. You don't see this on the Macbook Activity monitor, but it still renders Studio One braindead. So, no input. Sad geek. Thus, deciding to just headphone mix for a while and disconnecting the audio interface, the overall rig is a beautiful thing! Fast. I use the EastWest sample library hosted on an external 2Tb SSD and it rips right into the session! Noice! Yet, on occasion the Mac will toss an odd bit or byte at the Thunderbolt 3 and it'll go stupid, rendering everything into a state of duh. The only option is to unplug the USB-C cable from the Macbook and then plug it back in again (seems I've heard that somewhere. Sounds really familiar.) Naturally, this really spoils the mood. So then, the question...is anyone else having glitchy dock botching? (Don't worry about the Behringer. Their community forum is dowsed with UMC/M1 users going, "HEY!") I am on the latest Big Sur or I couldn't run my beautimus 49" super ultrawide monitor with M1. Oh yeah, geekin' deep. Standing by...

Apologies if answered elsewhere on the channel: is the amount of RAM important to the Logic benchmark test you ran? I note you mentioned you were using the 16gb version.
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tested on the 8GB version, so I can’t say for sure. Multi-threaded performance will be the main factor, provided the system has sufficient RAM for the instruments and plug-ins being loaded. In real-world use the additional RAM would make a difference.

Your 2013 MacPro got to 115 tracks?!? I have a 2013 MacPro 8 core with 64GB, and Logic Pro overloads the processor constantly. I would never get anywhere close to 115 tracks.
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 3 жыл бұрын
I had the 12-core and it was a good example that scored very high in benchmarks. I also took the whole thing apart and reapplied thermal paste etc. In most general use, the 8-core is faster due to the fact in can boost more cores to a higher frequency, but when you’re pushing to the limits, those extra 4 cores do make a difference. I am by no means a pro musician though, and a benchmark result is not necessarily indicative of real-world usage.

Just curious why you are creating a separate channel for the podcast. It seems odd to risk splitting your audience up. Even large channel like LInus Tech Tips keep their podcasts on their main channel. A lot of channels seem to be splitting themselves into multiple channels over the past few years and I just don’t see the point in it. P.S. sorry, this is the 2nd sort of “confrontational” comment I’ve made on your channel. Please know that I really enjoy your videos and this one was really great and answered some questions I had. We’re doing it because KZbin’s algorithm is incapable of understanding different content types. The podcast (naturally) appeals to a smaller audience, but YT views this as a failure and starts showing my content less. If I have a video doing well and then launch a podcast episode, it kills the previous video. Given the amount of time, money and effort that goes into making some of these, it’s pretty frustrating to not get views.

Electrics are not my strong point… but a PC PSU takes a three pin power cable, and the Mac Mini has a two pin cable. It must be earthed differently and perhaps this is the issue? There are ground noise removal gadgets available on Amazon. Pretty frustrating that you should need them though. I haven’t notice an issue with mine but I’m pretty sure my Antelope audio interface has something built in to suppress any noise.

@@ekkso5630 It’s already on your machine because Logic is a universal binary. Right click on Logic and select Get Info, then check the Open Using Rosetta option. You will give away a chunk of performance, but some have reported it can help with some of the incompatibilities. Worth a try.

@@ConstantGeekery thanks heaps, but it's still making horrible crackling noises when I play back, dropping audio sources, playing back tracks within the one project at different tempos... I'm almost wondering if I've got a lemon.

It is strange. I had a Scarlett a couple of years back and I don’t remember it needing any proprietary drivers. You’d think it would work fine. Have Focusrite support offered any insights? If other USB devices work, I doubt you have a lemon. Could be a software issue that a macOS reinstall would sort, but I’d check if others are having the same issues before taking that step.

One thing is on my mind: Why isn’t there any info about videocard in activity control? You have info about everything else. I have old Mac Pro 5.1 (2012) with AMD Radeon RX570 8 GB and it’s running out of memory all the time, especially when I’m using Adobe-apps, like Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I would like to know what’s behind this. I guess the computer is too old and that it isn’t made for the apps of today. It’s more than 10 years if you look at specs. I run 11.0.1 on it now, thanks to open core.

With Activity Monitor open, press Command+4 or go to the Window menu and you will see an option for GPU History. It shows you the GPU usage. On the View menu, you can select GPU Processes. Between the two views you can probably figure out where the pinch point is, though I agree it's not very user friendly to find the info.

@@ConstantGeekery Thanks, I tried it but didn’t get much out of it. When I pressed command+4 a black window appeared with some staples in the right corner, nothing else. No info about the staples either. I guess you need original videocard to see more. Well, I need a new computer, Mac or not. Open core is working but gives some issues, I guess. The computer isn’t compatible with Big Sur. The cheapest new Mac Pro I have seen on eBay costed around 5 000 US Dollars (with Windows 10 + MacOS installed, it was probably used) but with the same specs otherwise. And then they will release it with ARM-processor... Wonder if this big thing is going to be dropped for something else? Apple can’t be selling much of that expensive one. Have they sold any of the one with top specs, I wonder...

I have a new Mac M1 mini (August 2021), my old apogee duet 2 enables me to use/Hear my hardware and use Logic Pro. But, I can not record into logic with it. (I get a white noise recording or no sound) Apogee are not responding to me. These reviews tell you what audio interfaces work but do not show if they record into logic without this issue. Something due to the converters requiring software that the silicon chips will not run. Does anyone know what interface will work correctly without these issues ?

Have you tried running Logic through Rosetta? It can help. My Antelope Discrete 4 interface works fine recording into Logic on the M1 via USB (doesn’t work via Thunderbolt last time I checked).

@SherydaTaylor 3 жыл бұрын
The M1 most definitely has a thunderbolt 3. I think what you meant was there are no audio interfaces that are compatible with both M1 and thunderbolt 3. If that is what you meant, that was true when you posted this comment. However, Antílope Audio recently came out with Zen Q which is compatible with both M1 and Thunderbolt 3. However, it only has two mic pre-amps which may be good for some but I need at least four so, still waiting on the next gen audio interfaces to catch up with M1 and Thunderbolt 3 combined.
