I disagree with the notion that the average M1 user would use GarageBand over Logic Pro. Just because these are entry level Macs doesn’t mean that owners are just going to use entry level software. Since they are more than powerful enough to run pro software very well, it doesn’t matter if they are entry level or not.

Geekers, I purchased the M1 Air for the occasional off-campus, on-holiday music production. But rather than Logic, I do Studio One. It fits my aesthetic and workflow nicely. It runs under Rosetta on the Air and seems stable enough. Using the obligatory dock (Belkin Thunderbolt 3), I patch into many a toy including a Presonus Faderport 8 (as seen on TV) and a Behringer UMC404HD USB audio interface. Am I going too geekoid here? Whatever. Anyway, the Behringer clubs the CPU monitor in Studio One into absolute submission the minute they connect. You don't see this on the Macbook Activity monitor, but it still renders Studio One braindead. So, no input. Sad geek. Thus, deciding to just headphone mix for a while and disconnecting the audio interface, the overall rig is a beautiful thing! Fast. I use the EastWest sample library hosted on an external 2Tb SSD and it rips right into the session! Noice! Yet, on occasion the Mac will toss an odd bit or byte at the Thunderbolt 3 and it'll go stupid, rendering everything into a state of duh. The only option is to unplug the USB-C cable from the Macbook and then plug it back in again (seems I've heard that somewhere. Sounds really familiar.) Naturally, this really spoils the mood. So then, the question...is anyone else having glitchy dock botching? (Don't worry about the Behringer. Their community forum is dowsed with UMC/M1 users going, "HEY!") I am on the latest Big Sur or I couldn't run my beautimus 49" super ultrawide monitor with M1. Oh yeah, geekin' deep. Standing by...

I haven’t tested on the 8GB version, so I can’t say for sure. Multi-threaded performance will be the main factor, provided the system has sufficient RAM for the instruments and plug-ins being loaded. In real-world use the additional RAM would make a difference.

Your 2013 MacPro got to 115 tracks?!? I have a 2013 MacPro 8 core with 64GB, and Logic Pro overloads the processor constantly. I would never get anywhere close to 115 tracks.
@ConstantGeekery3 жыл бұрын
I had the 12-core and it was a good example that scored very high in benchmarks. I also took the whole thing apart and reapplied thermal paste etc. In most general use, the 8-core is faster due to the fact in can boost more cores to a higher frequency, but when you’re pushing to the limits, those extra 4 cores do make a difference. I am by no means a pro musician though, and a benchmark result is not necessarily indicative of real-world usage.

Electrics are not my strong point… but a PC PSU takes a three pin power cable, and the Mac Mini has a two pin cable. It must be earthed differently and perhaps this is the issue? I have old Mac Pro 5.1 (2012) with AMD Radeon RX570 8 GB and it’s running out of memory all the time, especially when I’m using Adobe-apps, like Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I would like to know what’s behind this. I guess the computer is too old and that it isn’t made for the apps of today. It’s more than 10 years if you look at specs. I run 11.0.1 on it now, thanks to open core.

With Activity Monitor open, press Command+4 or go to the Window menu and you will see an option for GPU History. It shows you the GPU usage. On the View menu, you can select GPU Processes. The computer isn’t compatible with Big Sur. The cheapest new Mac Pro I have seen on eBay costed around 5 000 US Dollars (with Windows 10 + MacOS installed, it was probably used) but with the same specs otherwise. I have a new Mac M1 mini (August 2021), my old apogee duet 2 enables me to use/Hear my hardware and use Logic Pro. But, I can not record into logic with it. (I get a white noise recording or no sound) Apogee are not responding to me. These reviews tell you what audio interfaces work but do not show if they record into logic without this issue. Something due to the converters requiring software that the silicon chips will not run. Does anyone know what interface will work correctly without these issues ?

Have you tried running Logic through Rosetta? It can help. My Antelope Discrete 4 interface works fine recording into Logic on the M1 via USB (doesn’t work via Thunderbolt last time I checked).

The M1 is not compatible with Thunderbolt 3 Interfaces.

The M1 most definitely has a thunderbolt 3. I think what you meant was there are no audio interfaces that are compatible with both M1 and thunderbolt 3. If that is what you meant, that was true when you posted this comment. However, Antílope Audio recently came out with Zen Q which is compatible with both M1 and Thunderbolt 3. However, it only has two mic pre-amps which may be good for some but I need at least four so, still waiting on the next gen audio interfaces to catch up with M1 and Thunderbolt 3 combined.
