Thanks for the video. I have the base m2 for my wife and I and it handles everything we do without using any swap whatsoever. I was regretting going with 8gb memory but the more I use it I know I made the right decision. People say go for at least 16gb to future proof. Well when the time comes I’ll just upgrade to a base m4 or m5 (whatever model is out when it’s time).

This is exactly what I say! Use that $400 you would have spent on storage and memory and the sale $$ to buy a new base model in 3 or 4 years. I’d rather have a base M5, M6 or M7 at that point rather than an old M2 16/512. That is if 8 GB does not hamper your use today.

For the internal SSD life span, you can install you OS on the external NVME enclosure and run from there. In this way, no worry on the life span of internal drive ever. Now in US, top 2TB NVME SSD is just $100. 8 times of the 256GB with much faster speed: in my case WD SN850X. You will also need to buy a decent TB4 NVME enclosure which keeps the NVME SSD cool. I am doing this on my M1 mac studio basic and this had worked great so far.

I'm a PowerShell developer primarily working in the Microsoft ecosystem and Python for automation of systems PowerShell can't touch or it'd be too much of a hassle to build a module for. I hate how everyone who recommends Apple machines always recommends those above the base model, but to be honest, there's truly no reason to stray from it unless you do intense video or photo editing. I'm so happy I bought the base M2 Mac Mini and haven't looked back since all I do is remote into VMs, servers, develop scripts using both of the mentioned languages, and your typical everyday stuff and I don't have 1,000 tabs open in Firefox. As a sysadmin, I never see myself needing something crazy unless I want to build VMs on the machine itself. All in all, an amazing purchase that so many people glimpse over.

@8:24 I did exactly that for my M2 Mac Book Air, upping it to 16GB and 512GB respectively, because I wanted longevity. It made the M2 MBA a lot more expensive, approaching MBP territory, but I did it anyway. I open lots of chrome tabs, I edit videos and also have chat apps like whatsapp in the background, and despite having 16GB, I regularly have the main SSD doing swap for RAM. Then I'll reboot to ensure everything is wiped clean so it won't use swap. Imagine I only had 8GB, it'll be SWAP everyday all the time. Your use case may be different and may not experience constant swaps.

Really interesting insight into the SSD. Apple M chips memory swap a LOT on systems with less ram. I'd argue to get the most ram and biggest SSD you can afford, and add a dock with external storage for your files, Im gonna go for a Pro with a 512gb drive, 16gb ram and a dock with a 1/2tb mechanical drive. (better for long term storage). Best future proofing i can afford and not quite enough to upgrade to the studio. Also I already have a monitor (a 2004! The SSD speed reminds me of the difference between a V8 and V6 engine. Yes the V8 will get up to speed faster or have more torque. However how often do people drive with the accelerator pedal to the floor? Either engine is still faster than a 3/4 cylinder engine with small displacement. Save some money and used external storage that can also be connected to another computer (either now or down the road).

My old 2014 Mini (secondary computer for financial stuff only) had become almost unusable, with the SSD portion of the 1TB Fusion drive having basically worn out. Performance was really dismal - taking almost 25 minutes to boot, and around 5 minutes to open the financial app I use, then checking for updates and opening my "since the beginning of time" financial data file - which is admittedly huge... Anyway, I bought a "base" Mac Mini M2 to replace the old one. Even with the 256GB SSD, what an amazing machine this is! I did not really need the 512gb storage but several reviews said that the base model with 256gb was limited much more in both speed and MTBF- you state it as well. My usage for this machine requires little; however, the need for RAM in PLEX is a bit higher. This is replacing my 2018 Mac Mini i5 3.0GB 16GB model. My Goal is to be able to transcode 4K to remote location which PLEX says requires a higher CPU than my current model limited to 720p by their specs.

I personally did some tests with Macbook 14 inch M1 Pro (10-core 1TB SSD) and Macbook 14 inch M2 Pro (10-core 512GB SSD). M2 Pro is even faster in data transfer from external SSD (despite the slower SSD)! I made various exports video in multitasking with Final Cut Pro X, with timelines of 2 min, 5 min, 10 min and 1 hour and 30 min. M2 Pro always on average 20% faster, even about 25% faster in the export of 1 hour and 30! I've also seen some comparison tests from Max Tech where he's gets almost the same results as the 14" M1 Pro 8-core, but honestly I don't know how that's possible, since to me it's even faster than the M1 Pro 10 -core version! Probably he had a version with a chip not yet perfectly optimized with updates (I suppose). There was excessive and stupid hysteria with M2-based SSDs, in my opinion.

You made some good points regarding SSD life span and write cycles. I will also go with base model because here in India, its Rs. 20K ($243) for RAM upgrade and another $243 for SSD. Manny bro, Are you from India?

I plan to make the switch to mac os from my current amd pc I built around 2017 or so and yeah I think this will be a good upgrade, I can always just use a external drive and go for the 256 gb model.

Hey , I am from India, i was thinking of getting one mac mini m2 as my primary machine, but my requirements are a bit high.. you know running those hefty designing and drafting softwares on a regular basis demand for a fast and capable cpu as well as tons of storage, will the 16gb 512gb version be enough for me. I feel that the storage is too low.. i feel that i would a storage of minimum 2tb to a maximum 4tb while i am not sure about the ram thing, in windows i would love to have 32 or 64 gb but only 16gb is there to be got, but since its a m2 chip so i am not sure how to compare or whatsoever. Please help me reach a decision

Wow, this video has really cleared up a lot of questions I had and some I didn't know I should have been asking. I love your ability to get straight to the point and then bring in other relevant issues. I have a couple of 2012 minis but I know I need (or would love) to upgrade them with newer models. Thanks to this video I am now reasonably clear on what my Ram and HD needs are. Thanks Manny.... well done mate.

Fantastic non bias review. Question: will virtual memory extend out to an external ssd ?
@MannyRataul Жыл бұрын
Short answer is yes. Long and complicated answer is it will probably not make a difference unless you understand memory management better than Apple Engineers. For the average consumer, allocating virtual memory to an external SSD will not be an easy task or make much of a difference.

I do have the M2 with 256gb SSD, and have 1.62tb of iTunes media on a 2tb SSD external drive. I already have 90+gb of music on the M2, so it’s too late to consider the 512gb upgrade. If I obtain another 2tb SSD drive, how do I set it up to assist the 256 SSD internal to extend it’s life?
@pauldewar626 Жыл бұрын
My iPhone has 256 GB storage. For a desktop this is simply not enough storage. Upgrade to 512 GB for $200 and double your SSD speeds too !
@MannyRataul Жыл бұрын
Thats only if you absolutely need it. There are cheaper solutions like cloud storage and external SSD’s. Not everyone needs a 512GB to perform their tasks. As a matter of fact most users wont even notice a difference in SSD speeds with the work they perform who are interested in the cheapest base model.
@jinkertsun Жыл бұрын
512gb is also supposed to speed up file transfer as 256gb only has one ssd fitted in the machine. £200.00 in the UK for an extra 256gb storage is an Apple rip off.

That amount of money is a total rip off. I bought an Acasis nvme Thunderbolt 3 enclosure and a 2TB Samsung EVO 980 Pro nvme for approx €250. Which gives me 3000 MB/s read and write.

@MannyRataul Жыл бұрын
Yes you absolutely can. The only thing you have to make sure is that its formatted to exFat or Fat32. Before doing this you can check the current formatting in properties. If you do need to format, make sure to back all your data first as formatting erases everything.

With a budget of around $700, which one would you pick for light video editing, multi tab browsing, client for virtual machine, and day to day email, and movie watching. M2 with 8GB ram and 512GB drive or 16GB ram with 256GB drive? Again, only M2 and no M1. Which and why?
@MannyRataul Жыл бұрын
16gb of Ram if you intend to use VM, you will need the extra memory. Also you can buy external M.2 Drive enclosures and expand the storage (larger and faster) much cheaper than what you would with Apple’s upgrade.
@deamondeathstone1 Жыл бұрын
Personally I'd rather not spend €230,- for 256 GB of extra storage when I can get two 2 Tb of nvme ssd's and two external enclosures for them for €20,- more. Enough storage for all your iTunes and Time Machine needs.

I am looking forward to your suggestion.

No, you should never go 512gb mac mini. You can simply upgrade to 1TB or even bigger ssd by connecting to a USB4/TB4 Hub. If you got a limited budget, you should upgrade to 16gb Ram instead 512GB SSD.

Hello Manny so my question is using one of the thunderbolt ports and the right adapter cable can I drive a monitor that has a display port (TB4 TO DP 2.0) thanks
@MannyRataul Жыл бұрын
Hi Bryson, there are thunderbolt to DP cables that will work for a display. I recommend this over an HDMI to DP because the thunderbolt port has a higher bandwidth that will give you higher refresh rates.
