In case you're wondering about the title - it's actually a written requirement for tech KZbinrs that they use a device for at least 169 hours before writing a review. However, for MacBooks it's actually 420 hours, but I got special permission from Tim Cook. Stay tuned for the "long-term" review at 1337 hours!

The MacBook air is a good deal everywhere except in Kenya. It has an unacceptable price here. See the comparison between it and the 14" MacBook pro. MacBook Air M2, 8GPU cores, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD goes for KSh. 255,000 i.e 2,125.51 USD MacBook pro 14", 8 core CPU, 14 core GPU, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD for KSh. 305,000 i.e 2,542.28 USD. We get the MacBook pro with 512GB SSD for KSh. 275,000 i.e 2,292.22 USD. There's no way I can buy the M2 MacBook air in Kenya however light it is with such small price differences🙅

I'm a developer that puts a heavy load on my laptop. I first bought a M2 Air with 24G ram, then a few days later ended up buying the 14" M1 Pro partly because these KZbin reviews. After using both of them, I'm keeping the Air and returning the Pro. The Air is night and day more portable, lighter, easy to hold in one hand, easy to put down and pick up. The pro is a heavy beast in comparison that feels awkward to hold. Also the Air demolishes any task I throw at it. It gets hot very fast under a heavy sustained workload but it has no issues and is literally as fas as the pro (sometimes even faster) 95% of the time.

After moving to Apple Silicon, I don't consider the Macbook Air line to be just the "entry level" laptop or the "average daily user's mac" any more. I consider it to be the entry level "Pro" laptop that is both flexible and powerful enough to do almost anything. It's a big leap from how it was initial marketed when it was still running on Intel. Heck you couldn't do much editing on the old Airs. This "entry level" macbook easily competes with intel i7/ i9s or the latest AMD processors.

Love your “alternate” take and the points you make, especially that the 14” M1 Pro isn’t the automatic choice once you start upgrading the Air. 14" MBP is a brick. MBA M2 is as portable as your iPhone. Finally a reviewer that does not just say to get the MBP just because price/performance is better. You just don't feel a performance difference. Either you want the Mini-LED Display and additional connections (MBP) or you need a lighter device to carry around (Air). And it is not just a bit lighter, what many reviewers say. You really feel the difference and can do the things you did on a MBP on such a slim device. If you don't want to carry it around at all, get the MBP - In this case I don't see any reason to get the Air. Just my two cents.

Exactly the form factor is its biggest asset. To have MacOS on a device as portable and light as an iPad (Pro) is insane and having used the "base" for 2 weeks it is completely worthwhile speccing up to 16G of UM and 512 G SSD even if it does almost cost as much as the 14" MacBook Pro.

I mean sure, the Air is even ever so more light and compact than the 14" Macbook Pro but if you want to fully use the M2's power and get the suggested 16GB + 512GB SSD model, at least here in Italy, you're at 2000€(a bit more if you also want the GPU with two more cores) and at that point you're 200€ shy of the base model 14" Pro which is way more powerful, has an headphone jack, it won't throttle as much all at the "cost" of some grams of weight more. @@ValentinoNicko yep that's exactly what I thought myself, but if you consider you're getting these devices to keep them for a long time(unless you have money to throw away) if you don't prefer the Air's portability at that point it's just better to save that 200€ and get the Pro rather than speccing up the Air and pay that crazy amount of money for it. Another great option would be to find the base M2 Air but with the 16gb RAM upgrade at the price of the one with 8gb, that would be a good deal without spending the money for the Pro while giving the base M2 Air a huge boost in terms of performance, as I red these M chips really benefit from the added ram and you could make sure your Air is futureproof.

Hello, I am considering getting the M2 Air and am wondering if it is a good idea to upgrade the RAM or SSD. I can't really afford both. The slow ram speed of 256GB doesn't really bother me other than it being slower swap memory. Would upgrading to 16GB make it so I don't have that problem? I dont really need the extra storage and if I do then I could just get external storage rather than buying the worlds most expensive SSD. I plan on using it for school, maybe video editing in the future and some occasional gaming on games like CSGO. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Any comments on the typing experience? I've heard some reviews claiming that the M2 MBA keyboard and trackpad felt cheap compared to the M1 MBA, that it felt like a downgrade, rather than an upgrade. I've heard that is less stable and less sturdy than the M1. I compared the M1 and M2 MBA, side by side, in an Apple Store, and I didn't get that impression, but then again I just tested it for a few minutes. Any thoughts after hours of use? I do type a lot on daily basis, so that's an important issue for me.

M2 Air with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD (if you can afford the extra SSD upgrade. If not, just upgrade the RAM). It will be enough for simple video editing, anything more intense and the 14" M1 Pro is better.

For those into digital arts, I still think the M1 MacBook Pro 14 inch is the better value. Digital art being defined as front-end website development, photography, video editing, sound engineering, and DJs. However, M2 Macbook Air is great for ameture digital art work and casual internet use. Even better if someone is small and light weight.

I have the 14" Pro already and just bought an M1 Air as the M2 Air just sits in a weird no mans land between the two laptops, its all about your use case. The Pro for me is about doing work, maybe schlepping down to the coffee shop. The M1 Air is a more personal device to chuck into my backpack when travelling. I can do light work on it, but more likely it'll be consuming KZbin / Netflix or browsing the web. With the M2, by the time the RAM and Storage is bumped to make it a useable work machine you're paying near the same as a Pro.

Couldn't agree more on this, I opted for a Midnight M2 Air 10 core GPU 16GB unified memory & 512GB SSD and form factor was my main focus given it's for use on the go. Really in most workflows I find there are diminishing returns from moving up to a Pro unless it's your main system, but I've got a powerful Ryzen desktop for that. Most people forget that only a few years ago, we would have dreamed of this level of performance in such a small form factor with battery life that can comfortably last an entire day or longer.

@@pressrepeat2000 I can answer your question. I got it myself and its perfect. I am doing web dev, full stack, tons of apps, IDEs, docker, chrome, win11 with parallels - NO problems at all. Max CPU temp I got while running everything at once is 55 Celsius. Most common temp is 35-40 C. It happens, that the process WindowServer starts consuming 100% of 1 cpu core for some reason, it seems to be a bug somewhere, - at this point - idle temp goes to 45C. Overall this machine is 100% perfect, its beautiful, lightweight, thin, best apple device I have ever had. My config is 24 RAM 10 cores GPU 1 TB ssd. It never goes anywhere close to being warm.

@@pressrepeat2000 1 thing I have forgot - there is a setting in battery options, Low power mode - this setting makes this machine super cool. It limits its power and I have forgot that I turned it on. During work, I haven't felt any downsides of having it on low power mode, but if low power mode is turned OFF - and I throw everything at once, so the win11 is running with its DEV environment + mac with its own dev env, - then this machine turns warm and temp even spikes to 100 C. Yet even so, I would not trade its form factor. For example, now I have YT, full stack dev env (rider + webstorm), zoom for calls, docker, db, nodejs and machine is 36 C constant. Win11 is suspended. Low power is ON. But there is no any kind of lag or anything, everything is smooth, so even if this machine is somewhat limited - personally, I am fine with that.

In terms of price and capability, the spec you choose vs base Pro are almost equal. It comes down to physical form. Do you want lighter laptop or chunkier? Also, if you upgrade the Pro it will become significantly more expensive but ask yourself if you need all that power? If your answer is yes, I would advise considering desktop with wide screen option.

To be honest 13 inch is too small giving user terrible experience for coding, photo editing or video editing. For M2 price they only give user 8 Gb of Ram, 256 Gb Disk Storage (with 6 times slower speed on base model, is 256 Gb even enough in 2022 ?), 13 Inch feels like "iphone Mini" that no one use too.

I don’t get it why people have become so dumb that they can’t understand an entry level laptop is not built to do heavy tasks.
