Imagine how hard it is for somebody less-confident to get them to go away. Off camera the day before I had to get quite aggressive to a young lad. He only walked away when I passed my stuff to Tanya, showing him he was about to get chinned. I think he got the idea then. 😆

@@M88ULV We are very sorry for inconvenience they caused you and many other tourists. A simple tip is to go inside a shop owned by locals not brands and ask them if there is festival and ask them to tell those people to go away. It's sad thing that happens but they are trying to make a living from that though but they try very hard which is very inconvenient for tourist. If you find them again say "Malai painting kinnu chhaina tesaile tapai janu hos", which means I don't want to buy painting so please go. If they still keep coming then tell them that you will call police. They will go away quickly.

Emilicia ma'am we are very sorry that you have to feel and witness these thing ☹ Our humble apologies. Tell them to leave straight and boldly and if they won't go then go into shop and ask them to tell them to go away or tell them that you will call police. Telling them that you don't want to buy things from them no matter what they say will demotivate them and leave you if no further interest is shown or interacted with them. Being a Nepali this deeply sadden me that you and Mulvey have to witness this. ☹

You do not have to entertain them. Just being blunt, and saying : no thank you and walking off helps. The more you try to be polite and have a conversation, the more they will bother you, thinking you are some easy target! Just wave your hand and say a big NO! Best wishes, from a fellow Nepali.

I noticed many beggars and robbers come from India because of the open border, in 2008 during my college time we used to hangout in thamel a lot. It used to be a less crowded and peaceful area. Most of the businesses used to be run by the locals. Now I can see many shops are owned by Indians and Chinese citizens. Also many Indians residing in Thamel, some of them are very good hard working but most of them enter with horrible intentions.

im in Kathmandu now and have had these exact conversations like 20 times with people. Turns out, most of them are from India as the first guy in the video stated. My hostel owner said its common for indians to move to KTM and they have a nice little scam where they take you to see their "family" and they show you how poor they are then ask for a donation or to buy a shoebox so they can find a job as a shoe shiner. Turns out the shoebox salesman actually just takes half the cash and they repeat the process... Normal Nepali people don't approach you like this - at least not in my experience. 10/10 times someone has been trying to scam me, guide me or sell me something. But other Nepali people who are minding their own business tend to be very shy and and polite. So fair warning to tourists in KTM be very cautious of every single person who approaches you to strike up a conversation...

But not once has anyone mentioned anything about any kind of hassle, and I couldn't help thinking that it must exist there. Now I know, so cheers for that! I've been to Morocco many times, and in a lot of places there you get hassled all the time as a foreigner, so I know how to deal with it, but it's good to know that Kathmandu's not as hassle free as many KZbinrs make it out to be. 😁 P.S. sorry about the ginger tea, you must be gutted. 😆

I try to check into my resort, propellers come out and the building flies away. No one takes my cash, not even in the local currency. Fish don't swim and birds don't fly. The sidewalk is mud. The train caught a flat. Then why travel, you ask? Well, the same thing happens at home; I can afford to; and, I have a lot of time on my hands. So why not? 😂 I mean, "Thank you for your video." Nepalese in general are very friendly and do not scam anyone!! Most of the people begging on the streets of ktm don’t even understand the Nepalese language. They come from bordering country- sad but it the fact. And it’s a desperate time since Covid .. there are hardly any tourists and people have no business. If you were planning not to go on a trekking trip, you could have gone to Pokhara and worked - you could have escaped the hustle bustle of ktm and be near to nature.

2nd guys name is Bicky. He's affiliated with some thanka painting businesses amd schools. He has injuries from the earthquake for which he needs money to get medical help but the bills for healthcare in Nepal are so high that it's unlikely he'll ever get enough from tourists to pay for it. Unfortunately it's these guys with limited english who annoy tourists and give a bad impression of poor people when there are so many deserving Nepali people. Remember the tourist areas of Nepal have the most cash and most facilities for locals, there is a lot of food around and strong community so they get by without the tourist dollar. Even though these street guys are indeed poor they are young and healthy. Visit a public hospital in Nepal and upgrade someone to a better hospital for the same amount as 2 or 3 of those guys would take you for and spend on alcohol. Even if you buy rice and veggies for someone they'll often trade it for whatever. Just have to be firm in your stance knowing that most people in the tourist areas have enough to eat. Should make it easier to decide who to give your money to. The people who collect plastic are generally some of the most grateful and beautiful as a small amount can really enhance their day and when you see them again they will not harrass you. Each to their own but that's a bit of what I've learned in Nepal. Excellent videos Mulvey. Craic from Pokhara :)

No mate, I’ve been to well over 50 countries and it doesn’t happen in most. Scams happen in a lot of places, yes, but what I showed here only happens in a few. Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia for example. It’s down to the police and authorities to stop it, but they must have a reason not to stop it. They definitely know it’s happening, but either don’t care or don’t want to stop it.

"There's no need to be driving on these roads." Hit the issue right on the nail, mate. These roads you're walking on have been inhabited for a couple millenniums now. And now people wonder why there isn't enough space for vehicles. It's not made for vehicles! How hard is that to understand? Hopefully, we get someone with a spine in charge of the government to ban vehicles on these ancient roads. Also, just tell them you're not interested mate. That's what we do when travelling to India. That happens a lot to us too. The more you engage, the more they engage.
@M88ULV

Spot on mate, it also feels like there's an attitude of 'I don't care who I inconvenience' from the people driving there. They can literally just use the main road, but they choose to save like 1 minute by driving through crowds of pedestrians. Glad I'm not the only person who thought it was wrong! All the best mate.
