Why do I even bother with other reviewers? You’re thorough, objective and honest. Classy. Thank you.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
It was a pleasure to read your kind words. However, other reviewers do often identify concerns and delve more deeply into some issues. I would suggest that basing a decision on one article, or video is hasty.
@MrCPH225 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the advice, but I don’t tend to make hasty decisions. There is simply to much “binary” information in most reviews. A camera is either the best or the worst, which is polarizing and confusing. I appreciate the subtle nuances and find your oppinions mostly in line with mine. I turn to Gerald Undone and Chris Nicholls for technical aspects, and to you for a measured overview.

Your reviews are, there’s no other word for it, epic! The amount of work you must put in before each video is very impressive. I can’t afford a full frame camera at the moment but part of the fun of our hobby is learning about new cameras and making a mental wish list for future reference! And there are no better reviews to help us than yours. I had several 'full frame' cameras in days long ago, including Fujica and Minolta models which I very much enjoyed. Why are full frame cameras so expensive now that the film is replaced by an electronic sensor? Well, there’s the answer I suppose, all the electronic stuff is very expensive! I guess if you added up the price of all the rolls of 24 and 36 exposure film we bought and added the cost of processing/printing them to the cost of the cameras it might be a better comparison - now we have to buy it all at once! Ah well, looking forward to more 'epic' reviews from you!
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Your kind comments are appreciated, thanks. It does take time, but these are projects that I enjoy. It's the sensor that's expensive. If there's a failure on a die making smaller sensors, there are many more that are OK. With full frame, a failure is more expensive - in addition, of course, to all the other factors like larger/faster processors for handling more data.

It’s great to have the detailed walkthrough of the camera features and menus, but to be honest, the one thing that you never seem to spend enough time on is the most important: image quality. Including dynamic range, rendering of skin tones, landscapes, high ISO performance, etc. you mention at the end of this video that the distinction between mirrored or mirrorless no longer matters, and I agree, but I would also argue that adding more and more bells and whistles also no longer matter. It’s all about the final image.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Yes, good comment, fair complaint. Here's the thing. The quality of all the cameras that I review is high, and while the issues that you mention are clearly of interest, for these cameras those are small details and differences. Video is not the ideal medium to address those (what could I show, or what could you possibly discern in a 4K (8Mp) video - even if you are watching in 4K, KZbin's bandwidth severely compromises quality. In addition, I do not have the setup (or discipline to be honest) to configure a test scenario that is repeatable for all the cameras I review. Quality analysis is an issue that's very technical and readily available on many other websites and channels (dpreview, tony northrup and many more) that I don't feel the need to do that. I'm not sure that I agree about the bells and whistles, although I do often feel that, particularly at the high end, manufacturers add more gimmicky features than needed. The intention of my videos is to give you a hands on sense of how the camera works. I provide detail on all the features, functions and capabilities, demonstrating the implementation and results. I comment extensively on usability. I hope that those are issues that are also important and in my judgement, it's an area where there are not many others providing their opinion. Finally, although there are some objective measures for quality, in the main it's a highly subjective field, and rather than to share my opinion I prefer to let my viewers come to their own conclusions. Sorry to post such a long reply, but I do thank you for your kind words.

While the f1.8 aperture will provide better photos in low light, 50mm is a little long for food photography - you may end up standing on chairs. The 24-105 is likely the better choice, but a wide-angle large aperture prime might better - or add a flash to your purchase.

Thank you so much for the wonderful review. I’m planning to buy my first full frame camera and I think RP going to be good choice ( after your review). Just one question: is it difference in image quality between kit RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM Lens and RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM? Thank you. David

A lens with a fixed minimum aperture (F4) is always preferable to one with a ramped (F4-F7) aperture. Thanks, a pleasure to read your kind words.

I find Canon's menus easy to navigate, it's Fuji's that give me a headache. Overall a solid review thank you.

Thanks for the kind words. Over years of reviewing, I've learned that familiarity makes menus easy to navigate. They generally have a fairly steep learning curve.

A very useable focus stacking routine is part of the free DPP software that comes with the camera so you do not need Photoshop.

I've argued with a lot of critical people on internet about this camera being logical for the customers to buy. Unless one shoots fast action photography or professional video, this will cover all their needs. At a price point that is hard to argue with. And for the thousands and thousands of Rebel series users out there, for example, this is a perfect upgrade, that will come with next to no learning curve and significant improvement in capabilities and IQ. I see the argument that RF lenses are very expensive a void one too. There is abundance of lenses for Canon EF mount out there, both cheap and expensive, big and small, consumer grade and professional. One should buy what they need, want or can afford and just go use the camera.

I agree, this camera doesn't get the respect it should.

We just bought one - having some issues taking pics of moving subjects - we primarily wanted to be able to shoot bans at concerts - sports etc. all moving targets- any pointers. surely this camera is good for this - we are entry level and used a T7 before - this is our first full frame so be gentle on us - we just need some pointers! Thank you in advance

Excellent, comprehensive review. You noted the lack of panorama. Is there a simple way to video and later convert to a pano still??
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. No. Just take stills and use photoshop or other to stitch them together - that provides a better result anyway.

Yes indeed, a fine camera combined with a superb *NEW* RF 'L'-lens. All together within a nice set price. A very thorough, although 'fast', review - that even an EOS RP owner have to play/replay to get it... :o I've had the RP set for a couple of months now, still learning, also from Your review ! Good job ! ... I Wonder how Nikon ppl. celebrates summer this year ;-)

The sensor in the RP is fully exposed when changing lenses. It does not have a cover that comes down and covers the sensor, as the "R" version has, making the sensor vulnerable to dust when changing lenses. This is a real thumbs down in my opinion, along with no in-body image stabilization (IBIS). It's a decent price, if those things don't matter to you. Canon will need to bring down the prices of its R, R5, R6 bodies if they want serious DSLR users and lovers to switch to mirrorless. Prices will need to match current DSLR prices.

I am mainly interested in still photography, what do you think about the use of manual focus lens on this camera? The absence of internal image stabilization sparks an hesitation in me.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Support for manual focus is reasonable. Peaking offers fewer features and is less sensitive than most. The 10x view though, is very good and useful, although it would be nice to have it switch automatically when using manual focus. While stabilization can be useful, faster lenses, optically stabilized lenses and tripods all provide alternate solutions. I was puzzled that it's not included for stills, as the IS for video is very good.

very nice review ! did you ever miss not having an internal flash ?
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. I didn't, but I don't use flash much and when I do an optional flash is much more flexible and useful to me.

Nice video. However I wished you touched on using EF lenses or third party EF mount lenses using an adapter. I hope you make another video on this. Thank you.

That's an excellent suggestion, however, I don't think I can accommodate your request.

14:34 "In Program mode there's no shift mode for alternate shutter and aperture combination". I'm not quite sure what you mean by shift mode, and I don't know about this camera. But Canon's standard method of selecting a different combination has always been simply to roll the "main" (top) dial - no special mode required.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you know exactly what I mean and I was as surprised as you were. I triple checked that I hadn't missed some button to activate it, but the manual also makes no mention. Such an odd omission.
@skakdosmer5 жыл бұрын
Remarkable! But then I must confess that although I mostly do shoot in P mode, I've never actually changed the combination in this way. If I don’t like what P mode suggests, I always go to a different mode, mostly Av. So this omission wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for me. But the fact that you can’t record video in 1080 with an EF-S lens attached is! (And I don’t like the small battery - why not an LP-E6n?)
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
I don't shoot P either, but felt I needed to mention that for those that do. Right, not a great video camera on any count.

Why do you suggest using Photoshop for reconstructing focus bracketed images rather than the free DPP facility. Does the Canon software not work?

Hoi Maarten, Kun je me als beginner vertellen welke camera beter is canon rp of sony zve-10? Canon rp gebruikt met 50mm lens 909 euro of sony zve-10 nieuw met kitlens 699 euro? M.v.g.
