Since you can only buy this kind óf ram and storage with the m4 max chip from apple. So for anything other then on the way video edditing I take a 5000$ custom watercooled desktop with even more ram, more storage, a way better gpu then even the asus laptop has and better connectivity options.

A common recurring theme while seeing laptops comparison is that latest M4 GPU is being compared with basically 2 year old gpu architecture, RTX 5000 series is around the corner, it'd be more accurate to observe the comparison between them and see where the industry is, and what would be a better buy for GPU intensive workloads (apart from gaming).
@brian.z200521 күн бұрын
Well they’re not here yet, and the other laptop is more expensive. When they do come out the 5000 laptops will be even more expensive than the m4. And a comparison at price level would leave whatever CPU in the laptop completely in the dust even if the GPU is better. That being said, 4000/3000 series released in fall/autumn, the m4 pro/max also released in fall. So you don’t actually know that 5000 series is right around the corner. HEVC have many different variants. While Apples variant is fast to export, it might not be the best in terms of quality per byte. To test video export properly you’ll also need to look at the quality of the exported file. Regarding this I would also like to se a comparison between the older M1/2/3 encoder vs. the M4 encoder. Is the M4 encoder just faster, or is it faster and better? Or maybe it is faster because it is worse. I think you should have (at least) 3 standardized shots that you always use to judge codec quality. A shot with many particles moving in random directions. A dark scene with some simple movement and smooth gradients, since dark scenes are usually compressed worse. And a normally lit static shot with some simple repetitive motion. Export should also be done at different bitrates. Codec differences are often hard to spot above 15Mbps, but are often easy to spot at 5Mbps. If there is still no difference at 5Mbps, export a 2Mbps version just to check if they aren’t identical. In the Windows community NVIDIA is generally considered to have a noticeably better video encoder than AMD in terms of quality. Only when turning off hardware acceleration and using the software encoder should the HEVC file be the same across both machines. That would be a more useful test to test performance. Quality of a software encoder is also usually better even if it is a lot slower. Also note that NVIDIA and AMD doesn’t have hardware acceleration of 4:2:2 H.265/HEVC and 4:2:2 H.264/AVC. Only 4:2:0 and 4:4:4 H.265/HEVC and H.264/AVC. 4:2:2 is most common in professional cameras.

I run a development environment with several docker images, several VM's such as iOS, Android and Windows and if I run those together on my M2 Pro Mac Mini I run out of memory. No matter how efficient the memory is, it will still run out of memory and no way to upgrade it. I made the mistake thinking my M2 Pro Mac mini 16GB would be sufficient because Apple said 8GB is actually 16GB. I now run my dev environment on my Windows Machine with I9-14900KF and 64GB of ram and use my Mac Mini only for the iOS and Mac Catalyst emulation. Maybe just a use case but I can see many in the same position.

The real crazy thing is that that MacBook can do all of that without breaking a sweat, and do it all on battery with no performance compromises while running for at least 12 hours without needing to be plugged in. Apple may not do gaming, but they definitely understand the assignment when it comes to portability.

Well done, however u should first of all when doing any computer comparison either Mac vs PC or Mac state their maximum power pull/wattage in standby and maximum performance mode in both power unplugged and plugged in with every tests u r doing in order to determinate performance per watt in particular test and for overall average based on all tests. If this would be done we could easily compare both machines from the power draw with battery drain and performance per watt perspective. It's quite unfair for Mac to not highlight that plugged in PC laptop like this one with AMD HX 370 + RTX 4070 probably takes more than twice amount of the power under maximum load.

To not let down also music producers you should have a cross platform test using either Reaper or Cubase, which by the way use ALL cores instead of just the p-cores, as Logic does. And that way we can also see the power, or not, of the AMD and INTEL chips in action. 2 cents.

I could even counter argue that all macs are good at is just photo/video editing and maybe audio/music production but PCs are used for all other kinds of work. Civil engineers and architects, mechanical engineers, off-shore oil rig workers, product designers, circuit board designers, automotive and aviation workers, movie and animation studios, etc. all prioritize PCs over macs for their professional work so it is ignorant to say windows is for gaming or creating games only.

I just tried a Lenovo that’s probably closest to the MacBook Air. It’s slightly older and was $479 for Black Friday and normally $799. You can’t deny that the nvidia graphics will beat the brakes off the m1 m2 maybe even m4 base models in terms of graphical performance unless it’s a metal framework game or something. I ran llama3.2 on an m1 air vs the Lenovo and the Lenovo was twice as fast easily. The m4 might be much more competitive. For the price it’s not bad. But at the end of the day I prefer the MacBook because macOS is smoother and the hardware feels way better. I liked using wsl on windows but with tools like home brew and macOS being Unix based, i don’t have a good reason to switch unless I need graphics performance for the same or similar price
