Thanks so much for this tutorial! I repaired huge deep scratches on my car (took me maybe 10 hours all up across 2 days). I'm a car noob but following this video helped me get perfect results! I really appreciate the simplicity of this video and the fact that I saved around $1000 by doing this myself. Something I didn't expect however was the mismatch of my car gloss with the acrylic lacquer so I had to buff out the repaired area afterwards.
@Tim2525252527 жыл бұрын
good tip: in stead of using tape on the left on the bumper what will leave a line you want to use a A4 paper and fold it in half so you have the round side of the paper facing the part you want to paint. in that way you wont have a line but you have a smooth trasition.
@Mad4Motors_7 жыл бұрын

@paulhunter1232 жыл бұрын
yes theres a hard paint line where the paint was applied right up to the taped off area. This could have been avoided by not taping the masking paper tight down to the bumper but placed over it instead and secured. However with a fine wet and dry paper it could be feathered in and buffed up. which i later read is what the guy did and got a seamless transition. Good repair.

I enjoyed the video you made repairing the Audi, but this video made me believe that even I could do it. My biggest mistake in the past was not taking enough time ( impatience) and applying the paint too thickly, both of which I now recognise as my main mistakes. Thanks so much. Colin.
@robertcain34264 жыл бұрын
A tip. Apply the filler first and then sand the whole thing once. Yes, it's unorthodox but the deep part of the scratch has already been abraded so it will stick unless it's an old repair and has been waxed.

Very good and clear instructions on how to repair and repaint the bumper. However, I can see a line where the tape was on the left side of the painted area, meaning that the paint won't have a consistent color with the rest of the bumper. He should have repainted the entire bumper, so there is no line and the paint color would be consistent across the entire bumper. Even if you can get the same paint using the color code from the manufacturer, it does not mean that the new paint is exactly the same color. It appears that he did the work outside in the drive way or the street, which is no no for painting. You can do all the sanding, body filling, and scuffing outside to keep the dusts level down but you want to paint inside a garage or close space, so you don't get air borne contaminants to settle on your wet paint. The best option at home garage is really using plastic liner and masking tape to make the enclose space big enough to keep the car inside and prevent the dusts from settling on the paint. Of course, you would want to wear decent respirator for the entire time including sanding, cleaning, painting, etc. to protect your lungs from the nasty dusts and aerosol paint. He is right on one thing, the painting has to be done at the right temperature and humidity so that the paint can dry and cure properly or it won't last.
@patrickarseneault74076 жыл бұрын
great video but one thing you never do is cut a panel or bumper in half to prevent paint from going over. what it will do is leave a line when you tear the tape off like what happen at 8:40 . you should be better at leaving it open and light spray over to do a blend in

Be sure to designate a safe space for your vehicle, away from moving traffic. Ideally in a garage with adequate ventilation to prevent particulate matter from landing on your paint during each stage. Quite a great job! (I think it'd look stellar if you contacted your manufacturer and matched the make(I presume a Volvo or Saab) and model's paint to match the original engine manufacturer's (OEMs))

You need to start with 80 sand it until the BLACK do not do it like he shows, as the filler will not grab on well on the finish of the bumper! Then you will see deeper scratches fill those. Then use 80 again to take it off the filler. Then use 180 to smooth it out gently and primer it, a couple times then fine sand it, then paint it

At 9:04 when you remove the masking tape and paper you can clearly see the vertical boundary line where the new spray met the original coat. How did you remedy that line because that always happens to me on these kinds of jobs (complete DIYer) and I can never fix it. Also I noticed you very cleverly stopped the camera from panning all the way over to the line I'm talking about when you showed the final job and congratulated yourself on 'not bad for a morning's work'. Nice to see a fellow Irish man not afraid to get his hands dirty. I was at this today on our golf. 100% not the right conditions, I was huddled under an umbrella on a child's step for a seat. I got as far as primer and spotted a few pin holes. I want to try get it right so I'll get some pin hole putty. I seen your other video, the golf wheel arch, that's what I was doing. Really bad rust/paint blisters. Do you know the gold golf you painted. There is a block of foam in the arch, that's what the problem is, vs installed to prevent vibration. I grabbed a good 6" of it and pulled the fucker out. It was ringing wet. Just needs a touch up and rib down plus some more degrees before I paint. But it's too old to be sending it in for £1000 pound vs wings respray. There was a recall but they're no longer taking full responsibility. I must remember that when I committed murder. Arrested me? @charlesdudek77133 жыл бұрын
The color code is usually on the driver's door frame. Your owner's manual and/or dealer would help you locate it if needed. The paint is normally available at either an auto parts store (often cheaper price) or at the dealership. The problem is it rarely matches exactly. If you notice the new paint in the video doesn't appear to match exactly either.
