Madame Web is a terrible movie. In this video, I go over my thoughts on Dakota Johnson's performance, the baffling plot, Morbius, and so much more. Sony. Please Stop.

So the future madame web sends visions to the 2003 madame to warn her and protect Mary Parker, still gets her powers the same way.Emma Roberts and Adam Scott had a bigger role before the reshoots, That's why the girls stay with them.

It'd be a lot more interesting if they kept Web's disabilities and powers from the comics and used it to flip the film on its head: a blind, paralyzed woman with incredible psychic abilities who needs support from the girls (who in this version are volunteers at a nursing home or something), while the villian wants to kill Web because he made her blind and wants to finish the job. Now you have reason for the characters to care for each other, the villian has a semblance of a motivation, and even a nice message about how the disabled and elderly aren't useless.

It would have been great, but would have had to face a ton of right wing "anti-woke" criticism for daring to have a superhero film centered on a disabled protagonist. Granted if it was good enough, it would shake off the "anti-woke" criticism (look at Barbie and Across the Spiderverse), but given how awful these writers are, it would probably have just been another example of sacrificial trash (ala Ghostbusters 2016)

Right-wing antiwoke criticism??? This is a terrible and easily disproved generalization. Conservatives like myself love GOOD CHARACTERS, like BLIND Daredevil, AMPUTEES Lizard and Winter Soldier, the PARALYZED Charles Xavier, DEAF Hawkeye, EYELESS Nick Fury, etc. Hell, Doc Ock could count because his prosthetics are fused to his spine, and Cyclops, who has to wear his special eye gear at all times because he can't keep reliable control of his mutation without them. DC's own Cyborg, who is largely made up of advanced biomechanical prosthetics, is a widely popular character that struggles with the resentment, dehumanization and isolation of what his father attached to him without consent after the lab accident that left him disfigured and killed his mother. DC's Barbara Gordon (OG Batgirl) spent a few years in a wheelchair as Oracle after the Joker left her to die after he shot her and almost severed her spine. If Madame Webb and Echo and whoever else are rejected, it's not because of "right-wing antiwoke criticism," it's because they're badly written and acted.

You’re close with the tax write off idea, but I think they’re doing something a little different. Sony’s contract with Marvel back in 2000 requires Sony to produce and release a “Spider-Man” movie every 3 to 5 years. Otherwise the movie rights go back to Marvel. What I think they’re doing is giving themselves a cushion where they’re releasing lower budget movies that use characters in their Spider-Man property every year. They don’t have to worry about getting a proper Spider-Man movie out at a certain time to fulfill the contract or constantly make direct sequels or reboots. Morbius had a budget of like $80 million and still broke even with $160 million. Madame Web has a similar budget. Last year’s Across the Spiderverse made $690 million, which covers its own $150 million budget plus almost 7 Morbius budget movies. Even if all their terrible movies flop, Sony still really wants to keep the Spider-Man rights because their successful movies make them so much money.

Like yeah they get money, but for anyone who's a fan of any of these actors, its just such an rare opportunity for any movie to afford so many talented ppl and then its spent on something like this. Like I think many of us have seen all these actors in many different roles b4, hell people like Celeste O Connor and Isabela Merced in the past years been making their name known, I thought O'Connor was rlly quite good in A Good Person and pretty decent in Ghostbusters, and Merced was pretty great in Sicario 2 and seems to do some interesting stuff in Dora, Instant Family, Father of the Bride and Rosaline (and will be in a John Green adaptation). A dogshit film like this probably matters very little for Dakota Johnson, who at this point seems to just coast on nepo-baby status and Fifty Shades, but honestly its a shame it might hurt the careers of less-established ones.

The premise could work, because it kinda did, there was a late mid 90's comic that's just Madame Web and the Spider-Women, doing stuff, but you know, that would cost more money than 80 million, and would be more exciting probably not, since Sony Pictures is behind it.

In my opinion it was never fun to begin with. The first Iron Man movie was okay as a standalone film. The second one was incredibly dumb and boring. I watched the first Avengers film when it came out and couldnt believe how dumb the plot was and how bad the jokes were and how cheap it looked. Didnt watch any of the sequels. I did like the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, it felt more like a sci fi comedy movie and not like a comic book movie. But then the second one again was really bad so i didnt watch number 3. Overall Marvel has had way more misses than hits. People were just caught up in the hype and childhood nostalgia for people who read comic books. I read books without pictures as a kid so I dont have the nostalgia glasses.

When someone first described the plot of this film to me, I thought "A film where Spider-Man is this Anton Chigurh level of unstoppable force trying to stop a bunch of superhumans. Where we see it from the superhuman's perspective, that's cool, I'd watch that." Too bad it wasn't like that. Think about it, Spider-Man is agile, he's fast, and he's super strong, if you're a teenager just discovering your powers and he's after you, that's pants-shittingly terrifying. Even Spider-Man’s humour would be scary, imagine this unstpppable force that’s been hurling shipping containers at you for an entire film and thwipping to where you are after spending minutes skillfully outrunning him just stops, puts his hands on his hips and starts quipping. That would be terrifying, you’d think he’s unhinged! If that was the film we got, that would have been super cool.

It is possible Johnson and Rahim did make more interesting choices on unused takes, but these 'just do it like it's written' takes are the ones that got picked for the edit. This looks like a director who didn't trust his actors to get on with their job.

Absolutely agreed, I think online you see anyone who's a fan, is a huge fan of the Planet of the Apes movies, and while sure it made a lot of money, it doesn't seem like its talked about much at all anymore, i guess cuz its cgi animals ppl dismiss it, but Matt Reeves' direction and writing and their work with Andy Serkis was just masterful, thats not just relying on CGI, its using it as a tool to enhance an already great story. Definitely one of the best trilogies of the 2010s, it had a really strong narrative throughline, rich themes, great characters who were memorable and didn't rely on an actors face, but on their performance as the character, which is tough to do. I'm very skeptical about the new one, since Matt Reeves is out, and its Wes Ball and his crew from Maze Runner making it which is honestly so dull. I think ppl give it the trailer too much credit for just having good ape effects, but the strength of the original story was very much because of the writing, hell there's been like a dozen Planet of the Apes movies inbetween the '69 film and Rise of the Planet of the Apes that people hardly remember precisely becuz the writing wasn't always as strong. Just having apes in a dystopian world isn't good enough, Tim Burton showed that. So idk, as long as the writing is great, it'd be awesome to have another Planet of the Apes movie, its definitely a concept ripe for stories.

I wanted to like the film as the idea of constantly getting visions is an interesting idea, it just felt like they didn't go far enough. Ezekiel also felt like a weak villain. He has bad dreams so he gets renderings done based off his memories and then those renderings are de-aged arbitrarily by 10 years and when 3 teenagers show up that maybe look like those drawings he decides "sure I'll kill these random people". He had too much unnecessarily backstory when a simpler premise might have been better. I wish they had gone full terminator and used a more straight forward villain like Scorpion. Ezekiel just felt odd. He is suppose to evoke spiderman but without the webs so hes just a guy who jumps around and sometimes crawls. He sometimes wears an costume but then sometimes doesn't so he obviously doesn't care about people seeing him kill so why wear the legally distinct spiderman suit. His strength is also weird as he doesn't die from a being hit by an ambulance flying through the air or a speeding car but he does die from falling sign parts. Honestly the film felt like a first pass of a story. Lastly, its weird that Cassandra steals a taxi and then proceeds to use it for the rest of the film. Like if she took it and then left it I could see it as a desperate get away but the fact she decided to keep it seems weirdly criminal.

This could have been a secret weapon response to The Marvels, and had the 3 Spider Girls drive the story, without even touching the character of Ezekiel. Instead, Madame Web would be blind and paralyzed in 2008-2009 (the time between Raimi and the reboot), remaining intially depressed "alone" before psychically casting her first "strandline" to the first Spider-Girl in 2019 (a year after the Snap) with the other 2 following in 2020 and 2021. This would be one born out of the absense of a Peter Parker, creating a universe accessible to Strange or others (but left untouched). Web realizes that MCU's Peter's absense along with the events of Far From Home caused additional Spider People to be made to exist in his place, having never known Peter's family and having their unique origin stories and tragedies already predetermined. Instead of Ezekial, I'd rather see Kane and Ben play a villain red herring duo. Kane initially appearing as the bad guy who just wants to kill Peter's clone Ben Reilly, who has donned the classical Scarlet Spider costume with blue sweatshirt in true recreation to 1994. Kane is actually trying to stop Ben from killing the other 3 Spider-Girls, who is secretly using Web to learn which universes he can jump to (instead of his lie in asking for salvation from Kane). Ben knows that his status as a clone can easily render him obsolete, while the Spider-Girls have true unique capabilties despite being "young new heroes". The 3 girls and Kane kill his evil version of Ben Reilly (who is a new casted male actor who has features of all 3 Peters), allowing Kane to don the sleek new Scarlet Spider costume, fullfing Ben's fear he tried to prevent. Web helps him replace Ben Reilly in his universe, with the 3 Spider-Girls now linked with Web. The movie ends with Web more happy in having 4 universes to "grandmother", instead of taking on a more stressful role of Strange. Kane would be casted in late 20s/early 30s to possibly anchor the Sony universe. But this is if effort was put in.

It bothers me a little bit that people are surprised this was terrible. The moment the poster and cast was released, it was clear what this would be. Hell the movie poster literally looks like a 12 year old did it.

I think the issue that Madame Web went through isn't exactly a bad premise as much as ABYSMAL execution. Like I think the concept of this movie actually sounds interesting, and if an experienced director led this, or even if it was in the MCU, it probably would have felt a lot better thought out, but the meme culture around Morbius essentially taught Sony that bad movies can still make a "cultural impact" and now, Madame Web exists because of course this is the darkest timeline

From your description it seems like the movie should've been like The Craft. With the girls finding themselves and Madame Webb feeding them clues through some mystical psychic visions or affecting the environment around them as she is also discovering her powers and trying to protect young girls who have yet to realize they have them. Maybe she even speeds up up their spider power awakening as she's the one who is accidentally leading the villain to them at the same time.

If Sony isn't going to give up the rights then heres what they need to do. Hand all the film rights back to Feige and just focus on Spiderverse and Insomniac Games. Feige has his flaws but he dose care. Sony's strength is animation and video games, not films.

Just by looking at the Wikipedia articles and TV tropes pages for all the characters in the film, and I was able to think up an entire trilogy of films that would have been far deeper, more epic, and entertaining than this was - all while sitting on the toilet one day. There was so much potential here. Sony just has no clue what to do with it or just straight up doesn’t care.

I too could come up with a better script while taking a massive shit. The story of my epic shit would be a better script.

The opening Sony/logo had the whole glitch/visions thing the movie did, but it was kinda weird, especially since the logo in general was otherwise normal (i think it was made for the regular logo in mind, but when the film was rescheduled, they were told they had to use Columbia's centennial logo *which in iself is a whole another thing with its appearance here*)

If you ever feel stupid, remember there are people who actually think Sony can make better Spider-Man live action movies than the MCU

So...who's excited for Kraven?! On a serious note, I have no faith in Sony in making another one of these standalone Spiderman character movies. Venom 2 was alright, but Morbius was horrible, and this appears to be even worse. And I would not be shocked if Kraven turned out the same way. I'm not sure whether they intend to have all of these characters converge in the MCU in a future Spiderman movie, but they seriously need to rethink their approach. If they wanted these characters on the big screen, they should have made them central characters in a future Spiderman film, not spin them off into their own nonsense stories that have no connection with anything Marvel, aside from the main character and villain.

I kind of want to give Dakota Johnson a pass, because if I were handed this script and given her paycheck, I'd immediately understand it for the absolute joke of a film that her performance suggests it is. There's no amount of work or investment on her part that could have rescued this thing. She'd be better off going to Kevin Feige and asking him if he'd pay her to sabotage it so marvel studios can have the spider-verse back from Sony. (they can finish the animated stuff)

Well, I can think of two VERY big, Sydney Sweeney related things that weren’t in the movie that made me feel ripped off. 1) she wasn’t in her costume enough, and 2) she wasn’t in her costume enough.

Been waiting for your review. You've been such a consistent and fair voice since I started following you. I don't have time to watch terrible movies, so I thank you for this on a very practical level. So, so, so disappointing that live action Marvel films have consistently screwed the pooch on multi-verse plots.
