Vanity was one of Prince’s protégés. Prince at first wanted her to use another name; she refused. As suggestive as this song is, she released one that’s even more explicit. She eventually left the music industry and became very religious.

I was actually about 11 yrs old when this came out, so most of the lyrics at that time went right over my head. While my sister was 14 or 15 and she idolized Vanity and I'm pretty sure she knew what every lyric meant(and then some). If you ever listen to any Prince tracks from this period of time, the lyrics are truly just another day at the office. By the time I graduated HS in 89, Gangsta rap was a thing, and by comparison the lyrics here are still rather tame. All that being said, Denise Mathews(Vanity) became a born again Christian for the 2nd half of her life and renounced her "Vanity" persona, and toured the country speaking her truth. Sadly, she did a lot of damage to her body in her younger years, and past at the rather young age of 57. But I admired her for what she did here, her acting, as well as what she did in the back half of her life, I'm happy for her that she found salvation before it was all said and done. RIP Denise, as the world was a better place with you having been in it.

The rumor at the time was that the number 6 referred to 3 pairs of breasts. Vanity (R.I.P.) later disavowed not only this song, but her singing career. She became a Christian evangelist. The song seemed to me (age 31 at the time) as being kind of, "girls can revel in sheer lust, too."

Prince's always exotic sexy humor and reinvention of Funk for the 80s was groundbreaking. I saw this early tour with them, The Time & Prince, but the Queen Diva of erotic Funk was Betty Davis (RIP) in the 70s, who was too nasty for her time & still remains underappreciated yet she helped open the door for Prince's acceptance. LOVE this simple but hott video. Vanity was too gorgeous!!! Betty Davis' NASTY GAL kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJeYf4h4fsh4r7csi=VzxjeHNwokHaRG6k

Yes, it was a little much for the 80’s but Prince wanted to push boundaries. Denise, was a girl who came from Canada, had a German mother and African-American father who was very abusive to her. She went on to do pageants, modeled and a few films while she was still quite young, early 20’s before meeting Prince. She fell very deeply in love with him and never stopped loving him even when she turned her life over to Christ. When he heard she’d died he talked about her in his Melbourne concert, almost crying as he sang to her, changing words in his songs to substitute her name in them. They were each other’s yin to their yang. They have a Rolling Stones cover where they look incestous twins. When I was a kid nobody, I mean nobody was Mixed Race and there really wasn’t any representation on TV so when I saw her I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up and that was a bad bi. tch. 😂😂💋

By the time this came out in the 80's, the shock value had already been absorbed by other acts. This one really didn't seem to raise the bar.
