The scene where his dad talks to the media and says that his son has done no wrong, while showing the flashback of his mother beating him up when she found out his sexuality is a really powerful scene. It really shows how we are quick to judge the father while assuming that the mother is always more tolerant and accepting. In this case, it clearly shows that such stereotypes are flawed, and fathers can be more accepting and compassionate than mothers.
@sagarikasuresh3 жыл бұрын
Though you interpreted my comment wrong which had nothing to do with gender norms, I absolutely agree with you here. That scene was powerful not only from an LGBTQ perspective but also to break stereotypes of how the mother is always shown to be understanding, while the father is portrayed to be repressive.

Korbin is absolutely right about the British rule ended years ago and now it's 2021 and it's all upto us, to claim the basic human rights. We have no right to call ourselves a progressive country. A developing country does not only need people who have good educational qualifications but also an open mindset to accept people as they are, and at the end we are all the same.

The level of layering on the show is insane. The landlord is closet gay himself, and is probably a bigger victim than Karan because it was far more difficult for homosexuals even a couple of decades ago. He is still living a lie, and to cover it up he has to throw Karan under the bus. Yet he is so enviable of Karan. Karan's Mom is shown to be super caring and supportive from the start, and the father is shown in negative light as he is pestering his own son for money. Yet eventually we realise the Mom is just compensating for her guilt, for not letting her son be himself. It was not that she thought the father wouldn't approve, she herself didn't approve and only pinned it on the father, as so many of our Indian moms do. One of the best series to come out of India, hands down. How Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti are able to write these gems is baffling.

Gaumarum and Ganapathism came later inducted into these sects and Vedism sort of linked all together and annexed these various sects into an association. The origin of Ganapathy or Vinayakar worship is sort of depection of the decline or conquering of buddism and the buddishist symbol of elephant was place on a child's body and annexed a part of the followers into saivism. Jainism was an extreme monasticism which had memebers who were great monks who dedicated their life in fields of medicine, literature, philosophy etc. Then these works were brought into the major 5 sects of Hinduism and made it theirs with Vedas.

But whereas in the south of India water was considered more sacred than fire and rituals performed on dieties were with water. They brought the Vedas to the land, thus came the Brahmins and created a highest social order claiming that they were the disciples or priests of all gods and they should perform the rites IN the temples. The Brahmins who claim to be the descendants of highest order according to manu smriti IN the past were pious and would only eat by begging everyday. They denounced all material pleasures in life and seekers of the truth of life and devoted to the gods to search for it. But now after the bakti movements in the 1 century bc the Adi Sankara they claimed the highest position by unifying various sects of native worshipping and practices into a family headed by shiva thus creating a modern form of Hinduism we know now. Under various kings and created agamas to govern temples and claimed influential positions in kingdoms and temples thus attaining a highest social order as we know today

I would like to mention article 377 is a gift(curse!) we got from Brits! 200 yrs of their rule many laws were taken as it is in IPC( Indian penal code) ...just serch homosexuality in ancient India and you ll realise it was recognised, it wasn't looked down upon, we have our temples with sculptures depicting homosexuality ! ( Not making up this fact) one more thing, it's very easy for Western nations ( especially America) to look at the countries in Asia from western lens. And judge them, and call them upon for human rights , but just understand the history of a region ! Asian countries are not a "collection of colonies making up a nation" like usa where you took up the good from all cultures , our culture, our beliefs has been shaped by years of history , in many cases rule by the colonial powers! I am huge supporter of gay rights but I still understand that it won't be easy to ensure them in india...it ll take years for society to accept them ! So easy for you ppl to say .....how can people here not undertand love beyond gender, but please look with an Indian lens !

From my understanding & a little discussion I've had with people who are a part of the legal fraternity, one of the reasons fr gay marriage still not being legal is the way India's marital & other relevant laws are written Our marital laws (like most other Indian laws) are extremely gender specific & biased since the focus is on the words "husband" & "wife" The words husband & wife decide the responsibilities & rights instead of it being the word "spouse" Fr having gay marriages be legalised, they'll either have to create completely new laws giving similar rights & obligations to both partners, or make existing laws gender neutral The probablity of the first one (i.e. new laws) is exponentially higher than the second one (i.e. having gender neutral laws) bcoz of the extreme pushback in India to gender neutral laws People have tried in the past & everytime it leads to protests & damage to professional & personal reputation of people involved....so much so that anyone who has the power to spark a change doesn't even try anymore, & most people don't even care about it till the time it personally affects them This is not the only reason, but it is one of the reasons There's probably not enough political will to dedicate the time, effort & resources required to draft new laws fr a small section of the society that doesn't have a big impact on the vote bank

That's why Universal Civil Code proposed by the Government is the need of the hour. Currently, there are different set of laws regarding marriage, family, divorce, inheritance across religious communities. Once that gets fixed and uniform across, incorporating same sex marriage laws would become much easier.
@sanjuktachakraborty21393 жыл бұрын
our marriages are not gender specific. At least the Hindu Marriage Act. It's never written that that a woman can marry only a man or vice versa. it's implied, but legally, you can find a loophole. And this is coming from a legal attorney who has been consulted by a friend of mine. This is on the basis of which the current group of petitioners and lawyers are fighting in the Court for gay marriage rights. The only problem we had was the prejudice and hatred. That prejudice still exists, but it now exists in a more layered manner. So yeah, the present laws can be accomodated to have gay marriages.

I love Satyameva Jayate (a tv show) where Aamir brings LGBTQ activists together and educates the public. Instead of spouse it is written as husband and wife. So who is the husband and who is the wife in this scenario. There are many other legal ramifications. So Gay marriages need to be legally permitted. But is not going nto happen any time soon as there is a lack of political will and it is a complicated matter requiring lot of legal changes. If it is just matter of living together then why have some states in US permitted Gay marriages?

@@akankshapatwari4167 what happens if single person adopts a child , will his child considered heir in ancestral property? Same should apply to gay marriage. As you correctly mentioned US has also not acknowledged gay marriage as per law in all states . gay marriage law has nothing to do with social acceptance , cultural issue or conservatism. Law just mentions financial part. In fact marriage laws in India are too burdensome to husband / male . Should have been simplified as US.

@@akankshapatwari4167 also it’s not about political will. Does community feel the need of such laws? In fact straight marriages I find law should be removed . Why should govt care, how much I should pay whom ? When to separate or live together? it’s personal thing.

The Law has to be ideal as well as practical. I would like to give an example to elucidate this. In an ideal world child marriages should not take place. But they do. Child marriage is illegal. But law provides a method of making it legal. They boy or the girl when they turn 18 can declare through affidavit that they were kids and didn't understand what marriage was and don't want to stay married. Then the marriage is dissolved not annuled. It is as if no marriage took place. They are given One years time. If no affidavit is filed, it then becomes a legal marriage with all its attendant laws. This so that if they have any children after 18 years they are legal and not out of wedlock. India is very complex and change is not that easy. It should happen and it will happen. Let us not try to run before walking.

Religion, caste, all these artificial nuances of our country perpetuate fear. Fear stops real progression to happen. It's sad, and horribly real.

Thank you for your wise thoughts on gay marriage becoming legal in India, it never occurred to us. We're just ignorant people who need speeches from you to see the light. On a serious note, please stop with this bullshit white savior complex nonsense. I'm willing to bet that most people who watch your content are already aware of the issue, and advocate for it where they can. We really don't need a white person lecturing us on how to better society. If you really want to help, do something meaningful like contributing funds to LGBTQ+ alliances in India.
