I don't think the interviewer is bad overall (his interview with DOOM is excellent), but he certainly doesn't capitalize on the (few) moments when Madlib actually seems willing to say more about a particular topic. For example, when Madlib says he made the "No More Parties in LA" beat on an iPad the interviewer should do everything possible to keep Madlib talking about that. Instead he says "oh that's interesting" and moves on... Missed opportunities.

Producers who are introvert or shy is due to the heavy creative process and this also involved thier inner feelings used to create music. This process creates a strange awkwardness when they speak to the public due to sound absorbing. The creative process uses thier minds and captivates them into sound alone. Madlib speaks through music and music only. He has secrets of Dilla he will never reveal. I don't know if this makes sense as it's not easy to put your finger on it. R.I.P James Yancey

That's his zone though. He doesn't care about the fame. One of the most modest individuals I have seen talk. It's like he is famous, but not at the same time. That perfect balance. Madlib is definitely in my top 5 producers or top 3 no question. Madlib is the most abstract producer out of all those you mentioned though imo. He isn't meant for everybody. He is meant for those that don't limit themselves to one way of thought, especially on music. He does hip hop through all the genres of music. Has that universal vibe to him. Kind of why he is an alien. I just can't understand how Dilla and Madlib were able to know each other at the same time in the same places doing the same godly work that they do. It's insane. They both were born and raised around music day in and day out. And this is the result of that. 2 of the best hip hop producer/emotion to motion creators I to have done what they do. That's the power of music and love right there. Nothing else matters, but that to them. That's what living is about.

Thank you for this interview. Madlib is such an inspiration for many musicians including myself. His knowledge of music and his approach to it really motivates me to keep going. He is an Artist with a capital "A". He cares about it and wants to learn more and more, never satisfied. He always mentions great artists like Sun Ra, Lonnie Liston Smith, MF Doom, J Dilla or John Coltrane. By studying him you learn a lot. People nowadays are so focused on the technical aspect (like mixing) instead of the creative input of the artist. OK, those things are important but in the long run what matters are the ideas that the artist provides to the culture. Him learning all those instruments is also so fascinating and motivates me to do the same. He is a real artist and i'm glad that his name becomes a bit more mainstream because he deserves it. In a few years people will realize who he was and they will be blown away. Shout out to the Bad Kid !

Everybody talks about the Madvillian Lp quite rightly as a mad MF DOOM vinyl collector myself but my favourite Madlib album production wise was Lootpack Sounpieces Da Antidote in 1999 the production was ......if you haven’t checked it and your a madlib fan that album was the most perfect “madlib” production.the first time I listened to it,it blew my fuckin mind, words can’t do it justice! Side note-When Soundpieces Da Antidote came out it got 3mics in the Source which is hip hop blasphemy,Peanut Butter Wolf who as the head of Stones Throw was in Lootpacks corner & he sent a note to the reviewer in the next months letters page of the source basically saying “WTF!How the fuck can you give this masterpiece anything but a five mics,ya’ll are sleeping watch”I’m paraphrasing but that was the main point, history has proven Wolf 100% correct & the source 100% wrong.

Its hard for artists like Madlib to have interviews because when he makes his music its all about feeling and he doesn't think about it too much, so when the interviewer asks him about production and shit he can't really give a massive explanation on how he made certain tunes because it all happened at that moment in time

So much respect for this dude. I like how he can't resist looking in the crate during questions.

Madlib's always been the person to speak more through his music instead of his words. It's why he's more comfortable with producing and DJing. So it's not like he's being rude intentionally:he's just not the wordy type.

'iPad is the shit, thank you Steve.' I prefer his sort of blunt answers that tell you something about the artist than those long convoluted, off-topic answers that 'geniuses' like to give the fans. Madlib is ill. He has such a massive catalogue of music too.

Some people get it, some don’t. Madlib is just how he is, people tryna reason out why he answers the way he does or why he is the way he is like the interviewer, but my mans just is. He’s that great cause he’s just that great, no further explanation.
