Click here for more Madness: madnessband.lnk.to/bestofID
British band Madness had a major UK hit with this song in 1981, and with good reason: heartfelt and nutty in equal measure it still brings the house down at every Madness show. The video - filmed above and below water - is one of their classics, with cameo appearances by big bird, a killer whale and Mr Labi Siffre, who wrote the song.
Lyrics
I never thought I'd miss you
Half as much as I do
And I never thought I'd feel this way
The way I feel
About you
As soon as I wake up
Every night, every day
I know that it's you I need
To take the blues away
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
Nothing more, nothing less
Love is the best
How can it be that we can
Say so much without words?
Bless you and bless me
Bless the bees
And the birds
I've got to be near you
Every night, every day
I couldn't be happy
Any other way
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
Nothing more, nothing less
Love is the best
As soon as I wake up
Every night, every day
I know that it's you I need
To take the blues away
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love

After 28 years of marriage my husband passed on Valentines day this year, This was always our tune and played it at his funeral, He loved me always like I was his queen, and even though my tears flow when your song starts to play by the end I am smiling and remembering the way he always looked at me and sang the words while we danced away, Thank you Madness for giving me a banging tune to remember my Gary

Fun fact: The violinist on the right (0:44, 1:26, 2:17, etc.) is Labi Siffre, the writer and original recording artist of this song. He honestly loved the cover so much that he asked to be in the video!

Thinking about how important (and brilliant) this song is. I first heard it, inevitably, when the video was shown (as pretty much all Madness videos were!) on Top Of The Pops back in 1981.. I'd have been 9 years old. I was already a huge Madness fan, and would see them live for the first time in November of that year. Such a hugely positive song at such a wildly negative, divisive time. Thatchers perncious, evil policies running wild.... we're still suffering today. The moment at 2:49 is still so shocking - the snare drum fill / machine gun fire... Chas/Carl in full uniform collapsing. I find this incredibly powerful and moving. Love this song very much and Madness too.

Listening to these songs (and occasionally watching) as a teenager I loved them. Back then I knew I was hearing something special, but I had no idea why they spoke to me so strongly. Coming back so many years later I still have very little clue as to why that is, except to say that the music makes my soul sing along. Thank you Madness, from a tone deaf teenager, and a tone deaf coffin dodger. You made my day in the '80's and you can still do it now. If I live to 100, I'll still feel uplifted by this music.

I remember this song well because a schoolmate was a junior sound engineer at the studio and I sat in. I totally missed it at the time that the song is about loss. Good to know that you learn as you get older.

This sums up what we're all missing what we have forgotten especially in the light of the recent tragedy in Liverpool! The lads of Madness in this song speak a whole lot of sense especially in the light of the garbage uttered by Patel!!! I listened to this piece and thought and prayed for wee Olivia and her folks! God rest Olivia rip!

I really miss these singers from the 1980's. Growing up as a teenager and listening to great music like this will never leave my heart. EVERYTIME I hear today's music (if that's what you call it) I think of my generation of music from the 80's. Today's music just doesn't have that sound. Music today is all digital where it is just one sound. In the 80's we had analog sound, Drum machines, Synthesizers and much more.

the strings at 2:38 are divinely inspired. they seem to yearn and swell as the song builds, mirroring the lyrics. given that most of the strings for this song are plucked sticatto notes, the contrast of the drawn out sliding tonges really helps add to the impact of this moment, and differentiates it from the rest of the song. its as if they where played on his very own heartstrings

I lived as a schoolboy through the '80s, and I think that decade was quite poor for pop music compared to the sixties and seventies. It's continued to decline since. Why do people always think the decade when they were young was the best?!
