For context, the season previous was considered such a disaster the show was nearly cancelled by NBC. Hence why Madonna here is reading a letter that says "it was all a dream." Season 12's new cast and writing crew pretty much saved the show.

In 1985, Michaels came back to SNL and changed things up a lot and it didn't go well at all. So, he changed things up again in 1986, hence this statement.

@@LinyraPia The 1985-86 cast featured Anthony Michael Hall (at 18, the youngest ever SNL cast member), Terry Sweeney, Randy Quaid, Robert Downey Jr., Joan Cusack, and Danitra Vance (the first regular, Black female member); Billy Martin set them on fire in the season finale and all but Nora Dunn and Dennis Miller “perished”...while Jon Lovitz outsmarted them and escaped unharmed.

it was also a reference to the tv show Dallas which had just erased an entire season of episodes by having a character wake up and realize that everything that happened in the previous season was a dream.
