Ray of light is a masterpiece. This song is about her ego and how she was after motherhood. How she stopped thinking only about herself. It also represents the elements of nature (water, fire, earth and air) and their meanings in a spiritual journey. That’s a difference from an artist to a singer only. she is not focused on vocals (not even if she wanted to), but on being a complete and representative artist of various fronts and concepts in a popular (pop) universe. Madonna has more than 70 videoclips and and she was named by Billboard as the artist with the best video catalog of all time. you still have a lot to see, in various eras.

Without her voice, Madonna's songs would have lost 99% of their greatness. Her voice is an extremely essential part of her magic. Madonna is not a zero vocalist like Paula Abdul or Janet Jackson. You might want to have your ears checked by a doctor. Need some intelligence as well.
@jonathanpessanha29073 жыл бұрын
@@CrystalCoffin No. I said Madonna is not a vocalist like Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, obviously she never will be. However she is perfect within her vocal limitations and has already proven that she can sing as well as in the Evita and Ray of Light era, but it is not her focus. She has always made it clear that she is not a great technical singer and that was never the goal of her work, but rather to be a complete, transgressive and avant-garde artist. She is way beyond singing pretty and doing the good girl line. She's always been provocative, smart, and in control of everything she does, far beyond the vocal divas. Madonna is a complete artist beyond voice, but a singer with intelligent content. You need to understand the basic of interpretation.
@leandroferraz37763 жыл бұрын
I understood perfectly what you meant by "she is not focused on vocals". In fact she does not have the greatest power vocal range, but her voice is still very unique; and everything else she manages to do (that no other artist can't) compensates her vocal rage limitations. When people don't have enough brains to understand a comment like yours i think it's best not to waste your time by replying to them. Great comment!

Madonna can deliver top-notch vocal performances as she did in Live To Tell, Papa Don't Preach, Oh, Father, The Look of Love, This Used to Be My Playground, Sanctuary, To Have And Not To Hold, You'll See, Joan of Arc, Evita film and the list goes on. She's also one of the few that could give a good live singing along choreography as in the Live Earth 2007

The lyrics are referencing how she’s changed after having her first baby. The bags represent children and the metamorphosis humans go through after creating life. The “zombie” looking people represent how she was travelling through life before she woke up to the reality that nothing really matters, love is all we need. Everything she gives her daughter comes back to her with 10x more love. She’s dressed in red while the others are dressed in white representing that realisation (red is love).

In 1997 Madonna gave birth to her daughter and her life changed completely. At the same time she started to study different religions and philosophies like Hinduism, Buddism and Kabbalah. Her album Ray of Light is heavily inspired by those events. This song from that album is dedicated to her daughter, she's singing to her. It talks about a change of consciousness, a process of growing up. "Looking at my life is very clear to me...Something is ending and something begins...Nothing takes the past away like the future, nothing makes the darkness go like the light...". And it also talks about a japanese concept called "the drowned world" (name of the first song on the album) which is the world of illusion, the modern world we live in which distract us from what's really important in life. The bag full of water she's holding is symbolizing her daughter. And also water is a healing element in most cultures. This video also shows a Japanese dance called butoh, in which the dancers perform strange but expressive moves telling a story with their bodies.

The red kimono Madonna is like trapped in that wooden box that All the people at the end are jumping around and pointing and screaming at almost ritual like to awaken her firey spirit. Her persona in this video was named “Hatsumomo” inspired by the best selling novel “memoirs of a geisha”
@howiet19713 жыл бұрын
To explain the Geisha element Madonna stated, "The whole idea of a geisha is a straight metaphor for being an entertainer because, on one hand you're privileged to be a geisha, but on the other hand you're a prisoner [...]" Madonna. She was very inspired by Arthur Goldens Memories of a Geisha and Hatsumomo specifically. Personally, I think the bag represents child and ego, but also the power of water as taught by Kabbalah. Water is very receptive to energy, negative and positive so if the water is also the child, then IT is receptive to same energies as we are largely made of water. Thats my take.

Like any piece of art, Madonna's videos can be open for interpretation but I'll share what she has said was her inspiration for this particular video. Madonna stated in interviews that this video is based on the book "Memoirs of a Geisha", the butoh dancers represent the distractions and trappings of fame, the large, wooden box that they dance around (and which Madonna is trapped inside of) symbolizes fame, and the blue bag of water Madonna holds represents her then-newborn daughter. Basically, the video was about how Madonna felt like a prisoner to her fame, and all that was associated with it (which is why she acted more and more erratic as the video progressed because she was being driven crazy), and she realized the only thing that was truly important to her was the love of her daughter. It is very similar in message to her song and video for "Drowned World/Substitute for Love" (which is also from the album "Ray of Light"), but the video for this song is more abstract.

She just had her first child. That's why she is cradling a baby at the beginning. The bags represent kids, not Canadian milk, but impressed with that reference. The lyrics talk about how selfish she was before but now she has a child, nothing really matters, love is all they need. Everything she gives to her child, all comes back to her. Pretty cool. And great song and vid.

Video's inspired by Memoirs of a Geisha(the book, movie was made much after). And she plays Hatsumomo, which was a geisha that changed the game in geisha world. See, when madonna is in red she dances really wildly which is the opposite of a geisha dance. If you look at a geisha performance, the first thing you notice, is that the dancing is VERY methodical and controlled. Hatsumomo took that and turned it on its head.

This song was the 5th single from Ray of Light album and was released in March 1999 and in US it was not very much played at radio peaking just at #93. Despite that was the #26 Best Selling Single in US Billboard 1999 Year End Chart. It was a TOP 10 in many countries (including Canada and UK) and was even #01 in Spain and Hungary. In US also peaked #01 on Billboard Dance Club Chart finishing the year as the #09 Most Played Song of the Year on US Dance Clubs. This single was short lived as Madonna released another song in May 1999 ("Beautiful Stranger") from an OST that became much more successful (Despite some global success this song failed to be TOP 40 Best Selling singles of 1999 - Madonna still charted #13 with "Beautiful Stranger" and #30 with "The Power of Goodbye" that was released in September 1998 but still sold over 3 million copies during 1999).

Like a couple people of said, Nothing Really Matters, as well as the rest of the vids from Ray Of Light, infused the use of the elements into them. Madonna took a ton of inspiration from a few movies for this, “Memoirs Of A Geisha” and “2001: A Space Oddity”. The bags of water are absolutely representative of birth and the beginning of life. There’s a lot of symbolism throughout the video that’s tricky to pinpoint since she takes from so many spiritual references as well.

Madonna was full on inspired by anime, kabbalah and oriental literature/misticism those days, so this is a mixture of all those influences. And incidentaly this music video inspired Masahiro Ito when making the Silent Hill 2 video game. In the mv she's a Geisha (a trapped artist according to Madonna) and the water bags and lyrics are about maternity, which changed her from selfishness to love. Great reaction guys.
@good2btheking Жыл бұрын
I think she was playing the once revered geisha (Hatsumomosan) from the celebrated novel called "Memories of a Geisha". The geisha who is not allowed to keep a lover goes crazy in the end, thus the depictions of her dance moves and the asylum like atmosphere. There is also a heavy does of Japanese symbolism.

The bags are filled with water that represents life and she's holding onto one like a baby. The lyrics "Everything I give you all comes back to me." is describing the nature of how karma works. What goes around comes around. You reap what you sow. I think her dancing was improvisational and she made up her own moves. Madonna plays a Geisha - inspired by Arthur C. Golden's book 'Memoirs of a Geisha' - in a red kimono and a black Cleopatra-wig. The other creatures in the video seem to be her followers. First they all treasure false forms of love, represented by bags of water. But that's not what really matters. Slowly they get the insight, symbolized with the people rising in the air. Madonna herself is walking and dancing through a long corridor. She has left the typical Ray Of Light-dance moves and now does a mystical Geisha-choreography. Madonna choreographed her own moves in the video, since she "[did not] like how other people say how I should move, I'm my own best choreographer." ("Entertainment Tonight News: Madonna, Behind-the-Scenes". Entertainment Tonight. February 6, 1999). Jean-Paul Gaultier designed the costumes. The singer told Entertainment Tonight why she chose the geisha look: "The whole idea of a geisha is a straight metaphor for being an [entertainer] because, on one hand you're privileged to be a geisha, but on the other hand you're a prisoner."

Most everyone has already touched on this. But, the water bags represent life. She’s holding the water bag in the beginning of the video which represents her daughter Lordus who she had given birth to a year before this album dropped. The birth of her first child changed Madonna’s outlook and her spiritual connection to the world. Ray of Light is by one of her best albums and is her most personal. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about Madonna in the 80’s. But this album brought great new sounds and such a diverse range of songs that have something profound to say about her, motherhood and love overall. One more note: I hope you guys go back and actually watch these videos again without taking and actually listen to her lyrics. I know you’re doing reactions and such but you need to really listen to the words and phrases Madonna is stating. As with most music, she is trying to proclaim something more thought provoking.

They're making Butoh dance! Butoh is an artistic manifestation that was born after the war and constantly seeks to reflect on Japanese culture after the nuclear disaster. Visually it's recognized for the use of erratic and grotesque movements, in many cases repetitive. Butoh themes are usually topics about identity, anxiety, chaos, criticism of postwar society, the construction of gender and sexual orientation. butoh is a danced lament, a writhing in the human condition. One of the visual references of its creators was the half-dead bodies that crawled through the rubble after the detonation of the Hiroshima nuclear bomb.

I don't think it's about how she changed after she had her baby. Sure, it is related, but it goes beyond that. It's about attachment to material things and how that doesn't mean anything. Basically what you were joking about in the beginning: in the end, nothing really matters. It also criticizes our capitalistic society. The bags they all hold in the beginning, including her, do look like a baby and that's no coincidence. It actually means the "nothings", the meaningless material capitalistic things we all think will bring us happiness, or even our ego, which we can feed endlessly (like a baby) but it will always be hungry and will never be satisfied. But for her what truly brought her happiness was her baby, that's why she holds it like that. The actor behave like zombies indeed. That's us. Us in this society. We spend our lives going after money, accomplishments, like zombies, without actually thinking about these things. The Japanese references and people in the video were chosen because Japan is actually a society that has both of those extremes, the traditional spiritual enlightenment (represented by the man being "elevated" at some point in the video while the others admire him while still attached to the empty bags) and also a very capitalistic fast-paced society. In the middle of the song, when the instruments go off in this chaotic piano riff and she seems to be crazy/desperate/drunk/happy/confused, again, that's us. We are lost, we're zombies, we're attached to empty promises of happiness and we dance/drink our problems away without trying to find spiritual enlightenment (not necessarily religion), which in the end, is actually love and that is what really matters. *LOTS of other references/symbolisms there, but I don't want to write tooooo much more than I already did. Lol

You kinda missed the song because you were too focused on the visuals. It has a beautiful melody. Ray of light is packed with deep stuff. The visuals are experimental. It's a whole art genre. Also, it's a kind of homage to Japanese culture and a critique of collectivism. Many Japanese feel very isolated and lost due to their country's ideologies. Collectivism robs people of their uniqueness. The title of the song is a serious play on the spiritual beliefs of eastern religion like Buddhism or Shintoism. That zen middle ground of not feeling the extremes of emotion (like loneliness or sadness which are totally normal to feel). Just keep cool, and acting like everyone else, and you'll be fine (but not because you've lost your true identity).
