Omg… we didn’t get a snack… we didn’t get a meal… we got a full seven courses! The WHOLE Blonde Ambition Tour in one reaction? Damn, girl. This is a lot. ‘We’re not worthy’… if you know, you’re a real one ;) Express Yourself - you’d already seen the MTV Video Awards performance, but this one is next level, with the male dancers adding some spice to the mix. I love when she sings ‘what you need is a big strong hand’ but she performs it where SHE is the one with the big strong hand lifting HIM up. She’s not only an equal, she’s the boss. Her duality of male and female roles was so revolutionary and powerful. Open Your Heart - still love the song… wish she elevated it beyond what she already did on the WTG Tour. Causing a Commotion - I enjoy the brattiness of M duking it out with Donna and Nikki Where’s the Party - I mean… it’s okay Like a Virgin - the SCANDAL! The Vatican tried to ban her from performing in Italy and she was almost arrested in Toronto. This is so damned iconic… the remix of the track and her Gauthier gold cone bra boustier. As far as I know, this version of Virgin was never released as an alternate single, but you’re right it could have been. Like a Prayer/Live to Tell/Oh Father/Papa - so beautifully staged and performed… theatrical… modern dance… tells such a powerful story Sooner or Later - classic and beautiful Hanky Panky - I love the costume and her playful cheekiness Now I’m Following You and Material Girl - fast forward. You can see now how much M hates Material Girl. She’s literally trashing and mocking her own hit. Lol Cherish - cute… love the mermen but that costume is hideous… what was Gauthier and M thinking? Into the Groove - ‘groovy’ remix and love the safe sex message during the AIDS crisis… M had our backs! Vogue - the dancing is epic, but this is a letdown, honestly. Lip synced and boring outfits… her later performances of Vogue are far superior Holiday - you can see the inner child her… after all the seriousness and sexiness in the tour, here she just lets loose and has fun. And the costume is classic and adorable Keep it Together - brilliant way to close the show, inspired by the film, A Clockwork Orange. Saving some of the best costumes and choreo until the end. Love how she says goodbye to everyone… the dancers… the BACKGROUND… the crew… her family… then one by one the band as they stop playing, until it’s only her left. Phenomenal. Truth or Dare will make you appreciate the tour even more… let’s get toooo it!

I was in the front row of one of the shows in London Wembley Stadium. Met Oliver Crumes (The dancer during Open Your Heart), as he came to the front of the stage to say hello. From a staging point of view you don't really appreciate it while you're watching a recording but that entire stage moved. At the beginning of the show there was nothing on the stage bar two drum kits. When the actual show began there was loud clanking of machinery, the two drum kits moved left and right and the platform, the gears and the stairs appeared from underneath...it literally built itself in front of us, there is a KZbin video live from Houston where you see the stage before the show completely empty. Then as the show went on, the metropolis staging went back down and behind the red curtain during Like A Virgin the church columns lifted out of the stage and the crucifix lowered down...it was amazing to see as it just sort of happened seamlessly. It's for that reason this show changed concerts, it was mind-blowing that stage and all it's hydraulics and moving parts travelled the world, it was technically amazing.

Aside from what's already been said, this was the introduction of what was called in the industry for a long time as the Madonna mic. She wanted a headset made to free her hands while singing - which set another standard in live performances
@dalee722 жыл бұрын
While that is true Madonna wasn't the first performer to have worn it. Janet Jackson wore one for her Control music video in late 86 or early 87. Madonna is my favorite female artist and JJ is my 2nd female artist.
@LaurentChevassu2 жыл бұрын
About that headset mic…. Kate Bush used one on her 1979 tour, tackling the same problem of singing and dancing elaborate choreos at the same time. What’s interesting is that in 1990, Tina Turner was still singing with a wired mic on her world tour. What a gap.
@joegotham272 жыл бұрын
It is rather interesting in how these creative decisions are made, right? I mean - even the Tina Turner concert - at which concert/performance does one choose to carry the mic and which ones not to - I supposed there would be some technical considerations involved as well - like perhaps the capabilities of the equipment to pick up and transmit the sound or maybe even the stage blocking - because in this concert Madonna does lug that handheld through a rousing number of Like a Prayer, so why?
@LaurentChevassu2 жыл бұрын
@@joegotham27 I'm pretty sure the handheld mic was superior sounding to the headset, and the wired was one even better. I think in Blond Ambition, Madonna does her serious singing with the regular mic and only uses the headset when absolutely necessary for the dancing. Plus the headset was probably uncomfortable. This said, the headset was also a statement (I'm pioneering) and a step towards musical theater (I could see her use one of those Broadway forehead mics, if she had a more trained voice). Just like Tina's wired mic was a statement nod to classic rock and undettered sound quality. If I remember well, Tina used a combination of wired and wireless during her 1990 tour (and that meant there was a stagehand moving the cord while she was going across the stage, there must have been a good reason).

Yes! Saw this live in Dallas. Right before my 19th birthday. I wore all black...fitted double breasted blazer, black bicycle shorts, knee high socks with garters, a bowler hat and gold monocle necklace. I was in first row of the lower balcony. On my feet the whole time. I guess during a ballad, the lady behind me tried to get me to sit down. I was blissfully unaware but my friend, a 6 ft 4 in drag queen, told her "ma'am, this is his IDOL he's seeing and he will NOT be sitting down! So don't ask again!" Snap! Then at end of Holiday, M said "thank you, HOUSTON!" where she'd been the night before!!! Oops! But before she changed for KIT, she came back out, got on her knees and threw herself on our mercy and all was quickly forgiven! It was actually cool because we knew, in a show so tightly timed and every moment choreographed, we got something EXTRA with that impromptu apology. So thrilled that you loved this so much! It's really such a landmark and in a way, it's almost like your journey really starts NOW! Like, everything before has just been leading up to this and the bar is officially set. Always darkness into light. One thing I will say Empress is that she is so physically exhausted by this show. Her voice is completely fucked. And she is so tired. No human had ever done a tour with this much energy involved. She has much better vocals in this tour. Barcelona is my favourite. I was 17 in Australia when I saw this televised and it changed my life forever. No performer including MJ had ever done a show like this. The Pope says this tour was the most satanic tour in the history of the world. The tour is about female expression, inclusivity, gay rights, HIV prevention, love of family, life and humanity. She did all this. It’s still incredible to me. My second favourite tour. But it changed my life. Anyone of my vintage understands this. Obviously all those hundreds of hours they filmed needed to be edited and also Truth Or Dare was released in cinemas worldwide so obviously it took some time to get it released but to me that's all about 1990. Justify My Love, the video, the controversy, Rescue Me etc. all feels like it belongs much more to the Erotica era.

The Blond Ambition World Tour was subject to controversy due to its sexual and catholic imagery. In Italy, a private association of Roman Catholics called for a boycott of the shows in Rome and Turin; Pope John Paul II urged the general public and the Christian community not to attend the tour, calling it "one of the most satanic shows in the history of humanity. The Blond Ambition World Tour has been noted for its theatricality and fashion, something uncommon for concerts at the time. Drew Mackie from People, said that "Blond Ambition changed the pop-culture landscape". The fact that the show was divided into different thematic acts represented, according to the author, "not only a level of creative planning unusual for concerts at the time but also the sheer volume of material Madonna had to work with". Lucy O'Brien noted that the singer had previously explored "conceptual musical theatre as concert" with her Who's That Girl World Tour, but it wasn't until Blond Ambition that "art, spectacle and dance really came together"Blond Ambition World Tour [...] would set the bar for every stadium show to follow. Time has failed to diminish its impact, with almost everything you see in a big pop production today drawing from its template: key arcs of creative themes parceling together songs into cohesive chapters; multiple costume changes, shape-shifting staging, battalions of backing dancers; narrative-enhancing filmed inserts and out-of-this-world graphics-and-light-shows. It was a masterclass in how to create 21st-century entertainment a decade ahead of the millennium"

And Cabaret was inspired by the 1930 film The Blue Angel featuring Marlene Dietrich as a dominant but sensuous female cabaret performer (she used a similar chair during her show). Madonna admired Dietrich and her strong feminist roles and character. @@dalee72 I only went to the one Blond Ambition show at Brendan Byrne arena. We got really lucky. My friend called Ticketmaster as soon as the phonelines opened and managed to get 6th row seats on the floor. I quite literally brushed shoulders with Naomi. The only reason I recognized her was because I had read a little snippet in People magazine about an up and coming model named Naomi. 😂 I bumped into her as we were lined up to get in our seats and I apologized and asked if she was Naomi and she smiled and nodded. That was my first brush with a celebrity. For Rhythm Nation we initially bought four tickets from Ticketmaster that were 1st tier I believe. So we asked two “dates” along. Then we decided to try and get better seats through Ticket House which was an aftermarket ticket agency. We managed to get two 10th row seats on the floor with a hefty markup. So we had this problem of having two great seats on the floor and and four ok seats in the 1st tier. My friend and I decided we would take the floor seats and our “dates” would sit in the tier seats. We were like 15 or 16 at the time so weren’t exactly mature yet. Anyway the day of the concert we were in the arena walking around and I noticed this dude who looked really familiar. It was Rene Elizondo Janet’s bf at the time. I had seen him on MTV and in the magazines. So we got up the nerve to approach him and ask for backstage passes. Lol I have no idea why we thought that would happen. He was like I can’t do that but I can give you front row seats. So he gave us four front row seats. It was one of those moments that just felt like magic. We were just on cloud nine but mildly disappointed we couldn’t go backstage. Lol. We were so lucky to have had tickets to the first performance because she canceled the second day because of her throat! (You'll find out more about this when you watch "Truth or Dare".)

Most college kids could get madonna blond ambition tickets either. This was before the internet made it impossible to score tickets as well. Remember the good ol days. We stood in line at the record store for the lottery. U got a number and that determined the order of the line. U wanted to draw a low number. So ur number came up and the store clerk tapped into some system and u hoped they didn't sell out before ur number was called. Lol i think it was some version.of ticket master wven nack then. She not only revolutionised how women were perceived in pop culture but she single-handed changed how live shows were made, nowadays you have Beyonce, Katy Perry, Britney etc back in those days she was the only star with the guts to do all those things and keep going regardless that abysmal backlash she was constantly under, no other pop star male or female would not dare be half provocative as Madonna for fear to instantly cancel, back in those days even if you change your hair colour would be enough to people stop buying your records, Madonna came back in every single album with a different face and completely different sound, young people nowadays have no idea of the impact she caused, this industry changed its rules by force because of her

I have been to every single Madonna show. Also had been to many concerts before this one, but this tour changed everything, no one had done a show that felt like a theater production before Madonna did. Non stop, cathartic is what she called it. Her shows just kept getting ether after this one. Not only Hers, but every single entertainer has followed the blue print of the blind ambition tour. No one does it like Madonna though. If you loved holiday here, wait until you see the girlie show. That show was fucking amazing too!

No one had put together a rock/pop concert tour that incorporated theatre production values to quite the same degree. The moving sets, the costumes (🙌🏻 JPG), the choreography and the entire art direction combined with Madonnas boundless energy and command of the stage was just so captivating. I remember it being on the news and current affairs every night for weeks in Australia and the tour didn’t even include Australia….lol we had to wait for the next tour.

Madonna used a combination of Donna Delory and pre-recorded vocals in spots to support her voice on this tour. You can hear quite a bit of pre-recorded vocals in "Where's The Party" due to how much dancing she's doing. You can really hear Donna support Madonna's high notes on "Cherish". There was a little controversy about using the pre-recorded vocals, but I think the quality of the show overshadowed that... besides there was so much more that was controversial about the show. If you watch again, I would suggest the Yokohama show. She's wearing the ponytail for that show. That is the show that was released on a laser disc in Japan. I was 18 years old, and saw Blond Ambition in Dallas, Texas. It was my 2nd Madonna show after WTG.

WELCOME to the THRONE ROOM 👑This is our Queen 👑 The semiotic depth and sheer stylishness of this tour was absolutely unrivaled at the time. There had been huge tours, like Pink Floyd’s and Bowie’s in the 70s, that used big set pieces and symbolism, but no pop artist, and ESPECIALLY no female artist, had ever created anything as coherent and unashamed of its symbolic depth before Blond Ambition. Michael Jackson’s tours were always incredible, always impactful and brilliant, but they were designed more to impress than express. Madonna brought a depth of STORY to the work, as well as a level of artistic risk that will always stand as groundbreaking. The closest comparison people could find in 1990 was Bowie’s Glass Spider tour of 1987, which had been impressively theatrical but hadn’t gripped audiences or critics, or flowed from chapter to chapter with the relentless energy of Blond Ambition. One of my favourite moments is the reversal of the “what you need is a big strong hand to lift you to your higher ground” line from Express Yourself, where Madonna and the girls instead lift the men up from their knees and march them forward. That moment defines the Madonna who would confidentially rule the pop world for the next 20 years, and still has an undeniable place as the OG Queen. The great Vincent Paterson was choreographer (he also worked with Michael Jackson to expand his dance language… wherever there’s showbiz greatness there’s always a brilliant gay) and being the clever collaborator he is, he was open to reflecting Madonna’s intention in the performance. She pushed back on any moment where a male dancer would lift or “support” her, and while he convinced her of some (the stunning lift in Oh Father, for example) she got her way with the feminist reversal of the “big strong hand” moment. I mean by this point can we imagine a Madonna who doesn’t get her way? For me the weakest point in the concert is the comedy throwaway section containing Material Girl and Cherish. She’s including them under duress, though she co-wrote Cherish and never had a problem with it, and obviously she wants to focus on delivering the strong stuff. The section is a welcome palate cleanser though, and it keeps the show from getting too heavy. I would say a better example of comedy in the concert are Causing A Commotion and Hanky Panky, and the ULTIMATE expression of fun is this version of Holiday!! I’ve always loved that costume too! You’ll see the top again in Herb Ritts’ beautiful photographs for the liner art for The Immaculate Collection. High points include EVERYTHING ELSE!!! But if I must be specific I think the best staged songs are: EXPRESS YOURSELF LIKE A VIRGIN LIKE A PRAYER LIVE TO TELL OH FATHER PAPA DON’T PREACH VOGUE HOLIDAY KEEP IT TOGETHER With a special shout out to the serious, controversial and more personal church section. Even the Like A Virgin bed was described as “cardinal red”, meaning the colour evokes not only red lust and the colour of blood, but the shade of red worn by Cardinals in the Catholic Church, the high ranking religious leaders who elect each Pope. Colour is used so selectively in the tour design, in both the costumes by GENIUS Jean Paul Gaultier and the set designs by Madonna’s brother Christopher. In fact for most of the tour everyone is wearing black, which brings a chic severity to the looks and does a lot to define her as a mature artist leaving behind the bright colour splashes of the 80s to enter the more serious 90s. It must’ve been startling for stadium audiences to see such drama onstage, without the usual garish costumes that pop stars employ to be spotted a mile away. The infamous cone “bra” look (actually corseted bustiers) were a gorgeous soft pale pink for Express Yourself, bringing a femininity to the aggressive way it literally cuts through the mannish suit, and an incredible metallic gold for Like A Virgin, then worn under the sheer black robes that follow. Gaultier is simply one of the greatest costume and fashion designers of all time. He’d been showing his cone bras since the 80s but they’d only filtered through to the public who were either rich or obsessed with fashion. It was this moment that turned them into full fledged iconography, and there was no other woman who could’ve elevated them to that status. This is why we see Katy Perry’s Fireworks bra or GaGa’s gun bra, and give a light golf clap… like go girls, but don’t think you’re starting something… The thunderous applause will always be Madonna’s. So much of the fun of Madonna’s work is that nothing is just for show, just for showbiz razzle-dazzle. You can be sure that if a decision has been made, from staging to costumes to musical arrangements, its symbolism and references have been thoroughly thought through by the lady herself. We were already very excited for you to be on this journey, but buckle UP, her career only gets wilder and burns brighter ❤️🔥

One of things forgotten about Madonna was her advocacy for those in the gay community with AIDS. Back then AIDS was devastating. Madonna stood up for gays and she fought for AIDS victims when our president wouldn't even acknowledge it. The man who taught Madonna to dance and encouraged her to move to New York to pursue her dreams was Christopher Finn. He later died of AIDS. This country has such a short memory. I don't want to compare the covid pandemic with the AIDS pandemic but it's hard not to. AIDS was considered a gay disease so politicians and the public didn't care. The most famous woman in the world at the time cared and she spoke up for us and embraced us. Madonna, thank you for all you did for AIDS and the gay community.
