I remember watching this interview. I was a teenager; and even though I had already kinda written off Top 40 pop in favor of grittier music, I always kept up with Madonna. She always had something interesting to say, and I admired her poise. I still do. This was also the moment that “bustier” entered the pop culture lexicon. I hope Madonna knows that there are lots of women my age who found inspiration in everything she did. ❤️

I miss Johnny. He really knew how to let the guest be the guest and didn't control the interview 90% of the time like most modern hosts. Just a classic that will never be replicated. Both of them.

I think her personality in interviews changed because eventually journalists caused her to become somewhat defensive. It's insane how STUPID all the questions at that time used to be. Knowing her as we know today, with all the intelligence, it's so clear that she's feeling unconfortable with all these stupid nonsense partly-sexual questions, when she was actually for sure ready to talk about anything, subjects that this man couldn't even guess. Im glad it's so different nowadays. She doesn't let people do that to her anymore and she'd rather make other people feel uncomfortable with her sharp comments than being spotted as a sexual object like that again. Madonna is a real icon.
@GuyOnTheInternet537 жыл бұрын
Jeff Vilaça "that man" is Johnny Carson who had a level of class you don't see on any talk show these days, and I'm sure Madonna had a great respect for him.
@jeffvilaca24397 жыл бұрын
What I'm trying to say is that all the questions have a sexual content being it about her body, her clothes or her sexual taste... whenever he goes into he personal life he finds a way to play another sexual content joke that is clearly making her unconfortable. When she starts talking about her story, there comes another sexual joke. FOR ME it's embarassing. She's spetacularly smart and knows how to play it back all times but you don't see the same questions being addressed to a man at any time.
@GuyOnTheInternet537 жыл бұрын
Jeff Vilaça wasn't her whole career based or played off on her being sexual tho?

Not quite the moment to have an in depth interview to peer into the soul of an artist or something. They're on a stage in front of a couple hundred people who are screaming and cheering. Madonna used her sexuality and had no shame doing so, seemed like a sex positive person.

This was broadcast June 9, 1987. She seems so innocent here. This appearance was much better than her first two Letterman interviews. The infamous one with Sandra Bernhard was just a little over a year later (July 1, 1988) than this one. But what a change she underwent during that time. And the notorious f-bomb filled one on March 31, 1994 marked her nadir of talk show appearances. Johnny would never have stood for that behavior.
