Regarding the last photo, where the wind made it difficult to get a sharp long exposure: one way around this problem is to take many shorter exposures (preferably in burst mode) and then combine them in Photoshop using the median or mean stacking algorithms. You need to load all the images as layers, select the layers, convert them to a smart object, and then select the Layer>Smart Objects>Stack Mode>Median (or Mean) from the top menu.

20:34 I honestly never understanded people that love this type of long exp. with the water & making it like "fog". I may be strange, but.. I like it "natural" , faster (or NORMAL) exposure and sharper image.

I have tried doing multiple exposures times to see which result I prefered. My personal preference is somewhere in the middle. So, an exposure when you can still see wave patterns, but enough exposure to make them soft. I feel the contrast brought about by the harsh waves makes the frame a bit too strong for my taste. On the other extreme, a complete still ocean makes a photo look rather cartoonish which isn't my cup of tea either. So I guess it comes down to personal preference, unless one is trying to tell a specific story and not aiming exclusively for what one might find beautiful. Wishing everyboby happy holidays!

Lands end is sooo beautiful!! Shot one of my all time favorite images there of a seagull flying above the blue waters. Shot everything in auto mode back then. Makes me wonder how on earth I managed to capture that...

I think on this occasion Mads, I preferred the fast shutter speed image at the end as it encapsulates the conditions you were dealing with. The Mayon Cliff lookout makes a great Milky Way foreground in the Spring too!

Hello Mads. So lovely to see you in the county I grew up in and still live in today. What a fabulous bit of coastline between Sennen and Landsend . Did you see the ship wreck that’s along there? The RMS Mulheil which ran aground in 2003. It’s a Germany cargo ship. More importantly did you photograph it? Hopefully there’s more videos of Cornwall to come and the cracking photos you took 👍

great shots as usual. Another way to overcome strong wind when you are trying to do a long exposure is to take 10 to 50 quicker exposures and then blend them in PS - you get the same long exposure effect, but with fast shutter sharpness.

Super video. Incredible tips. Where I live, one of my biggest challenges is high winds combined wwith the resulting sea mist. 50 to 100 km/hr winds are not uncommon. With the high winds and tides, we also experience some unique sea surges. The valuable tips you have passed on are greatly appreciated and will assist me with these challenges. Thanks so much.

20:00 The long exposure sea is pleasant to view. The best edit would be to: 1. Use the sky from the short exposure, it's lovely. The blurred clouds from the long exposure are nowhere near as compelling as the painter's sky in the short exposure and not they do not lead the eye blah blah in any useful way. 2. rather than a ton of sharpening, just use much of the rock structures from the short exposure in the long exposure, if you would use that picture at all. The short exposure, with the perfect wave crash, is superior. Another alternative I have never tried but seems like a good experiment here is to stack a large number of short exposures and mask to blend the ocean only. The sea might come out very strange, and potentially very beautiful.

Thank you for this video again, Mads. Incidentally, if you like Cornwall then you must visit West Wales which is equally and sometimes more spectacular, especially the whole coast between St. David's Head (Whitesands Bay) all the way up to Cwm Tydu in Ceredigion. The coast offers a wealth of wonderful scenery! Regarding the last picture, I find the sea a bit "milky" though there is a case for long exposure but maybe not as long as this.... If you do want it then I would take another fast exposure (but exactly the same amount of light going into the camera) and then blend that for the non-sea bits, and this will also work with woodland flowing water when you don't want the fluttering leaves to blur. Finally I agree with your preference here for the quicker exposure. It has become a bit of a cliché to smooth out water all the time: the argument does seem odd that is generally used which is to cut out the "distraction" of the water surface - are we distracted by what is often the main interest in the scene - water, the character of whose surface is so infinitely variable and expressive.... though having said this I do also enjoy longer exposures with water, though mainly when this suggests motion. Thanks for the video. The coastline of Devon and Cornwall is amazing. In the last photograph, I much prefer the faster shutter speed. I’m not a great fan of flattening out the sea entirely - but that’s a personal preference for me. I liked the last lighthouse image where you had the sea stacks as foreground. For me, the other lighthouse images were too small and distant in the frame.

You could always put the clouds from the long exposure with the shorter exposure and see what that looks like. I loved the leading line you captured with the waves leading to the arch and the crashing wave on the cliff...nicely timed!

I think about shutter speed a lot. Like James, I find tripods a pain in the butt and will try to use faster shutter speeds handheld, especially when using my long lens. My style of photography is not to plan for a particular scene. It seems to me that most preplanned shoots rarely work out. Rather, I will just go for a drive or hike and if I see a shot I take it. Many times the scene is fleeting so setting up a tripod may mean losing the shot. If I need one though I'll certainly use it. Another thing is I prefer my photos not to have a person or manmade object in them for the most part. I know they give a sense of scale, however, I think they take away from any perceived sense of remoteness which I like to convey. Obviously there are exceptions. Sometimes they're essential. Lastly, I prefer the version with the faster shutter speed. Best shot in this video. Beautiful image.

It depends on which motion you are trying to freeze - the birds' horizontal motion across the scene, or the motion of the wings flapping. Due to the small arc the wings make, the distance from the camera doesn't matter much, so if you want to freeze the flapping of the wings, you'll need pretty much the same shutter speed regardless of how far away they are. I think.

Ah, this made me home sick. I am from Cornwall and spent many days climbing looking at the wonderful scenes you captured. Ironically I took no photos!! Doh. But I aim to rectify that in spring when I shall return to my home land and spend 3 or 4 months filling sd cards. Great video, and that last image was Fan bloody tas tic. Is your editing course for beginners or folk that know their way (or at least think they do) around light room?

1:58, 6:18 if you don't play dramatic mood music with the image, it's a throwaway snapshop. Beware talking up a mediocre image. It's a useful stock. The problem with the lighthouse is that it is not an aesthetically pleasing object, because of the flat superstructure. These pics are not even interesting.

If the composition allows it, shortening the legs of the tripod, to reduce the profile, will steady the camera more. You may not get two minutes, but it will be better.

Fast shutter far better . Sometimes , I have had success in high wind is to get yourself steady and with elbow into body, literaly take a firm grip of one of the legs, but also relax if you get what I mean, this seems to take out the mini vibrations in the tripod but you have to make sure you are balanced and take the lateral pressure off your arm to avoid other movement. Hard to explain.

All the numbers and indications on SD cards are getting very messy and confusing, indeed. V90 is good, fast, but still doesn't tell you everything. The "300MB/s" is read-speed. What's most interesting to me is sustained write speeds, which I did not see for these Sandisk cards. (The fastest cards achieve 299MB/s write speed and even those, I don't know what is the sustained speed for writing larger amounts of data!). Fast write speeds matters not only when shooting video, but also when shooting in burst mode. The SSD drive, how fast are read/write speeds on that? I have a very fast SanDisk 2TB which was about the fastest I could find when I bought it earlier in the year and I'm wondering if this model is same or faster. About the small vibrations in the tripod from the wind - how well can image stabilisation (in lens of in body) help to solve that? Generally when shooting from a tripod the recommendation is of course to turn off image stabilisation but in windy conditions it might be better to turn it on?

A couple things you can do for wind. One some tripods have a hook at the bottom, hooking your camera bag or weight it down with a rock, can help. Two try turning off and vibration control in camera while using a tripod. I'm not sure about in board stabilization, but I'd guess turn it off too if you can.

Mistake 1: calling it shutter speed. The correct terminology is shutter time. 1/500 of a second is time. 500 mph is speed. Speed is time over distance. There is no distance in shutter measurements.
