I'm a Welsh-descended American and love this anthem as well. I also can't help but cry every time I hear it--can't quite figure out why? Consequently even though I know the Welsh words by heart as well as the English translation of those words, I get so emotional I am unable to sing it! I also get very emotional when I hear Yma o Hyd as well as Calon Lan. All truly mind-blowing emotional songs.

I'm English and have spent much time in beautiful Wales! The people, the music, the culture, the kindness, humour & hospitality are legendary! Also is their innate love of their homeland, seen clearly here, in that whilst the choir have their music, the audience don't need it to join in with gusto, from the oldest to the youngest, they ALL know the words by heart!! If THIS is the. terrible "nationalism", so derided & scorned by the progressives today, then love of one's homeland is no sin!! Oh, yes? The Scots have mostly spoken English for at least six hundred years, and their unique culture thrives quite well, thank you! Welsh is spoken by less than 20 percent of the population of Wales, but Wales remains as Welsh as ever. A language is only one part of a national culture.
@benheneghan86214 жыл бұрын
Not true. Ireland and Scotland are both worldwide brands, but they do it all in English. What happens is that they adapt English to their own ends (which is how dialects arise), to the point where it becomes a part of their own distinctive cultures. If Wales somehow no longer had the Welsh language, they could still find other ways in which to be excellent in their own culture, just as Ireland and Scotland have. Go to the South Wales valleys, which are no longer Welsh-speaking heartlands, and you'll still find a brilliant, vibrant culture like nowhere else in Britain.

The true beauty of this song, translated: This land of my fathers is dear to me Land of poets and singers, and people of stature Her brave warriors, fine patriots Shed their blood for freedom (Chorus) Nation! Nation! I am true to my Nation! As long as the sea serves as a wall for this pure, dear land May the language endure for ever. Old land of the mountains, paradise of the poets, Every valley, every cliff a beauty guards; Through love of my country, enchanting voices will be Her streams and rivers to me. (Chorus) Though the enemy have trampled my country underfoot, The old language of the Welsh knows no retreat, The spirit is not hindered by the treacherous hand Nor silenced the sweet harp of my land.

I know that the Welsh love to sing. It’s in theire blood. Many years ago I was a lorrie driver in Belgium. And on a nice summer morning I was driving on the E17 motorway to Antwerp (traffic was slow due to congestion) a lorrie drove past me, the cab window open and the driver was singing loudly, not a modern song he heard on the radio, but it was a beautiful song with words I couldn’t understand. At first I tought that maybe he had a few drinks. But then I read the company’s name and adres on the cab door (I can’t remember what is was). What I do remember was the name “Wales” at the bottom of the adres and the Welsh flag proudly painted on the cab door. It was a sight I never forgot.

I love this concert. The singers while all singing together show their individual joy of the music. The orchestra is magnificent. I'm a little obsessed with this concert and watch it nearly every day at the moment. I'm learning Welsh and trying to sing along.

Sung with feeling, and meaning, unlike many singings of national anthems where they just want to get it over with and go get another beer. Beautiful

It is wonderful to see all the audience standing and singing along with the Choir. I left Wales when I was five in '56 and the Anthem still sends shivers up my arms and the hair on the back of my neck. It is a beautiful Anthem.

The land of my fathers is dear unto me, a land where the minstrels are honoured and free, Its warring defenders, so gallant and brave, For freedom their life's blood they gave Chorus: Country, country, faithful I am to my country, While seas serves as a wall for this land so pure, O, may the language endure forever. Verse 2: O land of the mountains, the bard's paradise, Whose precipice, valleys are fair to my eyes, Green murmuring forest, far echoing flood Fire the fancy and quicken the blood Chorus… Verse 3: For tho' the fierce foeman has ravaged your realm, The old speech of Wales he cannot o'erwhelm, Our passionate poets to silence command, Nor banish the harp from your strand.
