Ronnie Van Zandt said once that a good songwriter has to be able to relate to the people. This is why you can connect with all of us, Pat. We can relate to you. You’re not some overly tactical douche always going on about spec ops, teams, rangers and all things operator. You get that even guys with combat experience can’t grasp the current “business model” of high speed, low drag individuals. Instead , you break it down crayola style and we all can relate. Thank you.

That's pretty much the way they taught me at Gunsite back in '92. Some points: the speed load is the critical one, because your gun is dry and the fight is still on. So that's the one you should be best at. The Tac load, by definition, is done during a lull in the action, so you don't have quite the stress, quite the immediacy of an "oh shit, my gun is empty" load. At Gunsite it was a big no-no to get caught at slide lock. It meant you weren't managing your gun. While I agree to an extent, in reality it meant we were doing almost no slide lock reloads, the ones they we should be best at. There is a drill I use in my classes, (I didn't invent it, can't remember who I stole it from. ) In one drill, with little expenditure of ammo, you learn all THREE loads, Speed/Combat, Tactical, and Administrative. Start with a round in the chamber, empty magazine, spare mag in pouch. On Go command, draw and fire two shots. You will go to slide lock halfway through, requiring a speed load to get off the second round. After firing the second round, come back to Ready, check your environment. If everything is cool, do a Tactical load and holster. Once holstered, pick up your empty mag and do an Administrative reload, leaving the pistol in the holster. Lather, Rinse, Repeat. Each repetition only uses two rounds.

Had a civilian lecture me on stowing my half empty mags & not using them up or almost completely up then letting them fall to the ground, I just told him I like to keep the junk in the trunk. Love how you described that as “When you want to not when you have to” on mag changes. Every opportunity I had to put a new mag in I did bc that was typically the couple of seconds of calm in an engagement.

Where i train, we also pull lightly on the bottom tip of the mag right after slipping it in the pistol, before initiating the reload, juuuuuusssstttt in case it did not click just right on the way in. This saves you the "oh shit" moment of seeing your magazine drop to the floor as you pull the slide to put one in the chamber.
@douglashornell-scott51262 жыл бұрын
Great stuff Mac. With tactical reloads, couldn’t agree more. The way we did it was to return the partially used mag back to mag pouch but invert the opposite way to how the full mag is carried (as you showed). That way, everyone knew instinctively that they had a partially loaded mag even when performing tac reloads in totally dark environments. I would add that any reload be done with eyes towards the threat. The eyes should never drop to the pistol or mag, either reseating a mag or returning it to the pouch. When we ran range and shoot house drills, instructors never forced the guys running through the drills to tac reload, unless it was a specific drill set. Guys had, had to decide this themselves but woe betide anyone who suddenly ran out because they forgot to tac reload!

I say: always ALWAYS have at least 1 extra pistol mag. Also, clean-check your spare mag, holder. Dust, lint, sweat, water may seep in. Inspect the carry ammunition too. Crud, grit, gobs of oil might show up. I often download 1 or 2 rounds to reduce the spring pressure but with modern semi auto guns that's not vital.

Something I concluded was to cant the gun and bend my arms in the ways my hands most naturally come together, just below about chin level. Also, one thing I was taught on tac reloads was that you’ve probably expended twice as much ammo as you think you did, or at least us mortals.

Robert Keller has an interesting philosophy when it comes to tac reloads, which is to basically just do a speed reload and then pick up the dropped magazine afterwards if you have time. Gets your firearm back into a ready state as quickly as possible in case something comes around the corner. Not sure if that applies to pistols as well and may be a slightly different definition of "want to" (perhaps closer to the "have to" side) but I thought it was an interesting alternative perspective on the classic tactical reload.

Why would you want to stow the mag? Seems to me if you are doing a tactical reload and come upon a “have to” reload you would want to find the half spent mag in the speed reload pouch… or is he going off the idea of having multiple mags on your belt?
@damiansar15 Жыл бұрын
Why present the fresh mag on the bottom side of the pistol instead of presenting the fresh mag on the top? This allows the higher priority magazine to be more visible/closer to face during the mag change, yes?
