Amy Lee is the best female vocalist of the last 2 decades. She is so underrated by the industry and the public.
@larrylindgren9484 Жыл бұрын
I was trying to think. Ronstadt was before her and was crazy good. Rimes was crazy good too. But before her. You might be right it's been a long time. She'll be one you miss when she's gone. But don't listen to when she here. Amy's problem she doesn't come out with an album every day like someone like Taylor Swift seems to. She gets lost. Too bad The Bitter Truth was very good and sold way less than I should have. It was better than 95% of the crap out there. Maybe even 98%.

Still remember listening to Evanescence in the mid 2000's. Now, as teenage boys, we didn't want to admit to listening to this, instead of rap and hip-hop tracks. But we all just fell head over heels for Amy Lee, and personally, she still has my heart in a vice grip to this day, along with Nightwish's Tarja. The way these ladies can appear both vulnerable and all-powerful is incredible, and it's a testament to their ability to project emotion through music. Amazing.

I love this. All the boys I knew in the (ahem) early 2000’s (I’m old) loved Evanescence. It made me really happy to know that some of their favorite songs were by a female lead, with emotional and vulnerable lyrics. (And Tarja and Floor are amazing, too!)

Amy's voice was warmed a bit now that she's 41. She enjoys it, sounds a bit more Alto in areas and even more powerful belt and insane high notes. She sounds the same live and in album, it's crazy.

Speaking of lyrics....Evanescence has so much more going on than just what is on the surface. They have a narrative that runs through almost all of their songs. Basically she is living in a split reality/personality. "Going under" represents running away from the real world and its pain/tears. "going under" has many synonyms: sleeping, dreaming, dying, lying, not breathing/drowning, hiding and more. Of course, the opposite of those things means coming back to the real world. There is also a Gollum/Smeagol thing going on. In this song the 2 personalities are battling each other for control. The "60s radio" is Gollum and the normal voice is Smeagol. Gollum's job is to deal with the pain in the real world. When Gollum is in control Smeagol goes under. Once you see it, you will never listen to Evanescence the same again. It can get pretty dark.

The face effect on Ben (the guitarist) at the end is I think a reference to how fame can change people and how it can affect the inner workings of a band.

There is so much to enjoy about Amy Lee's voice and voice technique. She has amazingly tight pitch control, which is absolutely necessary against metal instrumentation and those big thick complex chords with gallons of dissonance. She is usually working a lot of dynamics while then locking into big fixed FF long notes. Her ability to hold long notes with no vibrato and then phase in light vibrato when it fits and not clash with the big chords is amazing. She runs her vibrato, it does not run her as I have seen with so many singers.
@larrylindgren9484 Жыл бұрын
More than a few singers today use way too much vibrato. It not a good sound at all.

This song has a lot of meaning for me, when it was released I was in the middle of a total breakdown and complete wreck, this song helped me a lot at the time but takes me back to those memories. I have an ex-girlfriend who was an opera singer, and she said this was one of the most difficult contemporary songs to sing live. You can just hear that it obviously requires a lot of breath control and lung capacity. The usage of vowels is tricky and not so helpful either.

Also the end when Ben's face changes, there is a reason. Amy and Ben are the co founding members of the band and notoriously didn't get along, Ben wanted her out of the band and in the end he left the band in the middle of their first tour for their first album, Fallen, that had blown up big time. So that clip of him looking like one of the ghouls, says a lot.

I believe the "radio" effect is technically known as a "notch filter," which removes frequencies above and below specified limits, allowing only those which fall into a defined "notch" to pass. Edit: Whoops, got that backward. A notch filter _removes_ frequencies inside the notch. The correct term is "band-pass filter."
@martinhafner22012 жыл бұрын
If you saw it in a 10 band EQ on a sound board, it would look like a triangle with the peak at 1-2 khz and tapering down linearly in either direction. Known as radio or telephone effect. As heard in the Beatles "The butter wouldn't melt so I put it in the pie" in Uncle Albert. It can be made narrower for severe effect or wider for a more subtle effect. There is so much fun to be had with sound systems.

Hi Maggie - I want to suggest you react to Geddy Lee's voice of Rush. The song is 2112 from their career changing album in 1976 titled 2112 (like the year). This is a 7 part suite lasting 20:38 (like a Washington National Opera's 20 minute mini operas). Geddy plays 2 characters in this epic piece which talks about a future civilization ruled by priests, and a citizen who finds something strange and unknown - a guitar. The official Vevo version is a comic storybook with lyrics - you really get the full understanding of the story. Sometimes it's blocked - but you can just put up a picture - as long as you can see it. It will be a completely different experience from anything you've ever listened to. The Rush Army will be there to support you. Maybe you can find a group to produce this as a short opera - would be a great project for Julliard.
