Good summary. I also have both, although I don't have a physical Revolut card. The big advantage I see with Wise is I can receive income in various currencies and convert it to Euro relatively cheaply. Revolut is very widely used in my country so is excellent for sharing bill and transferring money to friends and some small businesses too. I intent to keep both also

I have both and travel a lot as a digital nomad, but generally prefer Wise, just simpler to use, completely transparent, card payments are always reliable and does not try to do too much. Revolut is bit of a jack of all trades but not the best at any, if I want to invest there are better companies, same with crypto. Neither are actually banks so do not put a lot of money in them.

Revolut is a bank. it has a bank license of the EU, UK and also in individual countries for example Netherlands and Lithuania

Revolut has payment links. You send it to someone and they can pay you with ApplePay or any other credit/debit. Wise does not have that. And for me that makes Revolut nr.1 And customer support is crazy good. And referrals are crazy i get 180€ monthly from referrals. They give you 40€ just to invite someone! And on Wise after you invite someone in the app they have to make 3x 250€ transfer for you to be abble to get your reward lol. Idk just sayin

You will never know how much this video helped me. 👏👍 I bought a place in France, and needed a French bank account. That can be a horrendous challenge, because they want all your tax returns from your home country, and a large deposit. Etc. So I set up a WISE account instead. So very good. All my property insurance and utilities are set up with auto pay via WISE. It was seamless. Thanks!!!🙏

Revolut is prepaid and wise is debit card. That also might be issue sometimes. For example I can’t pay Italian highway toll with prepaid card.

the fee on the weekend is for exchanges of currency. You can do this before hand and when you pay it will use the local currency account.

Good work summarizing both of them , just 2 things to correct 1 = You can charge your wise balance with your bank's card the same way as revolut , in both cases you might be asked to confirm transaction using 3ds from your austrian bank , otherwise no big differences 2 = in wise you also have vaults , they are called jars i 100% agree with your advice about using both , while keeping your old regular card , and so far i also havent found the perfect debit card provider , cause each has his pros/cons

Thanks for clarifing that. 🤗 You are right, it‘s indeed possible to charge the Wise account via another bank card. I never noticed that, it‘s quite hidden. But I still have to say that for that, I prefer Revoluts process, because to me it‘s much more straightforward. Also, the Revolut vaults work better for me. As far as I saw, I can‘t share the vault with other persons, which is essential for me. :)

Nice job, Maggi. Interestingly, Wise has policies and limits that depend on your country of permanent residence. For US residents, there are very restrictive limits on free withdrawals of cash from ATM machines, regardless of where you are traveling. Once the limit is reached, there are heavy fees that apply.

Same here with my account, the limit is not very high either. But as I mentioned in the video, I rarely cash money anyways, so that has never affected me. :) I agree about the fees, but compared to what my bank would charge me, it’s the way cheaper option.

@Helena Carlock “Heavy” is a relative term. Wise puts limits on free withdrawals, both the amount and the number per month. After the limit is reached, there is a fee…$2 might be right. I haven’t paid attention exactly since I try NOT to use Wise for cash withdrawals at a machine. I have other bank cards that charge no fee, so I don’t use Wise for that. Using wise for a purchase, on the other hand, is free! If you live in the US, you can make unlimited cash withddrawals without fees by using a Capitol One 360 or Charles Schwab debit card.

@Helena Carlock On my Revolut account, it’s 2% (min 1€) over 1000€. I think thats very cheap, compared to my bank back home who would take 2% as well, but a minimum of 7,5€ plus for example in Brazil, there are no ATMs where I can get money for free with my Austrian card so they carge ~4€ per withdrawal (with Revolut I can get money for free in all Caixa banks) and then my bank uses a bad exchange rate… so while getting 100€ from Revolut cost me either nothing or 2€, my Austrian account would cost me 10€+ in fees…

Hello Maggie, I use the Wuse card for 2 years now. First: it's very easy to.put money on the Wuse account: either via Sepa transfer from your employer, or from your private bank account, it takes about 24 hours. From the Wise card of my son it takes seconds. You can easily split money between 2 Wise cards and it costs nothing. Paying bills with the Wise card costs nothing in Euro snd o ly a small amount in foreign currency. I think k you should correct this. Kind Regards, Gaby.

I believe I gave Wise a very good rating, after all I still use it in the areas it shines, but I stand by my opinion that Revolut makes it easier to charge the account and does things like the shared vaults better, which is useful for me and my husband while traveling. I just got back from Thailand and was using both. Had an incident where the atm rebooted during a wise withdrawal. Money was debited from my account, but no money dispensed. Rang wise and after some paperwork, they submitted a charge back to visa. Took 30 days, but I got the money refunded including all the fees. I thought my money was gone, but thankfully it was resolved. Took 30 days. Wise was very helpful. So I'm pretty thankful.

I am still on the free account on both services, so with the basics that I used, I haven‘t noticed too many changes… 🤔 The way I use it is still the same. Revolut introduced many new features, but they are mainly for the paid accounts, so I don‘t have any experience with them. Hope that helps! :)

My WISE card DID NOT WORK when I most needed it. After being in transit for more than 24hr, I arrived to pick-up a rental car, but WISE declined the payment. I called support but no one answered as it was out of their working hours. My purchase was within the card limit and I had 10x more funds than what was necessary.

Oh no, that does not sound fun at all. I personally always book (and pick up) my car rentals with my credit card from my home bank. I never use Revolut or Wise for this, because I think they technically count as prepaid debit cards, and debit cards and car rent companies, it’s always a hit or miss and many of the rental companies don’t accept them at all or only with restrictions.

I am an older (70+) traveler & not quite sure I understand the difference between using the cards you are reviewing and my regular credit cards. My credit cards have no international transaction fee's for purchases and no fee's for accessing cash at a bank or certain ATM's .I do carry cash, which I replenish as needed. I auto-pay my credit cards statements in full each month, so I never have any interest fee's for that either. Also, when I use my credit cards for purchases, I have certain protections/warranties, that I otherwise would not have if I was purchasing with cash. So, if all I am doing is transferring money from my bank checking account into one of the cards you are speaking of, what is the advantage of them? I'm not quite understanding the concept. Are you saying that when using my 'bank ie Chase Credit card, they don't give me the best currency exchange rate when purchasing? Today's exchange rate for a purchase might be different, more or less, than it would have bent first exchange the money that would be put on the cards you are mentioning. As you can probably tell, I am even confused trying to figure out how to ask how it would be different from just using my bank credit card for purchases & or using cash that I have withdrawn from my bank checking account via the ATM. Hope you can clarify a little on that. Thanks & I love all your video's. Getting ready to do 6 months in the EU with a 40L backpack. I am excited & nervous at the same time. 😊

Hi DiAnn! Well, if you’re bank account charges you no fees, then you indeed have no use for a card like this. Austrian banks are thieves as soon as you want to pay with any foreign currencies and charge a lot, so I save a lot of money using Revout and Wise. Hope that helps. :)

That‘s definitely a challenge, especially with all the seasons! There is no way around taking special medications, but regarding the rest, don‘t forget that you can buy almost anything anywhere… I love layering my clothes when it‘s getting cold so I can wear the same clothes as in warm weather, but I would probably treat myself to a new winter coat when it gets really cold instead of hauling it around for months. 😅 I also know a few people who mail themselves a set of winter clothes and mail home some summer clothes. :)

Hi Maggie! For US residents beginning 1 March 2023 its 2% on anything over $100 (one-hundred-dollars) with Wise. I dont think Revolut is available to us yet 😥 I still like the idea when traveling to EU to be able to have 1 card that has both USD and EU stored for the convenience and maybe a CC for backup though. Is Apple Pay widely available in the EU like it is in the States? Next trip Id love to be able to just use iphone/watch for payments like home. And not have to worry about/deal with cards at all 😉 I can dream right? lol

Hi! Many places I traveled to recently (Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal) support contactless payment, either with cards or with the phone. Most supermarkets and stores have it. But I would not recommend it as the only mean of payment, because many small restaurants etc. don’t have it. And I was amazed that there are still places that don’t even accept any cards and only want cash… so I joing your dream of a day where all of this will be easier… 😅

Just open a charles schwab investor checking. Use atms worldwide, the regular atm fee is reimbursed 3 weeks later. Always say YES local currency and NO to check balance and requests by the atm to convert currency those fees don't get reimbursed and its a rip off

Interested to hear your view about carrying cash. Last month we travelled to Europe and UK, and was very surprised that cash is still often asked for, and on some occasions the only form of payment. We had to scurry to an ATM for cash, and of course got the high fees and exchange rate. It was very surprising, especially in Amsterdam and Berlin. Many thanks.

Unfortunately still necessary… I always keep around 30€ in cash and use it when I have to. In Austria, we have lots of remote restaurants that don‘t have internet connection in the remote mountain areas, so there it‘s a nobrainer. But unfortunately many other restaurants insist on taking cash or only allow to pay with card if it‘s more than 20€.

But I’m a bit confused- putting money on my Wise Card is easy - you either transfer it from a regular bank account after the first transfer it’s instant or for a small fee you can Apple Pay it. You can do both, you can charge via transfer or just use your normal debit card (then it’s like buying something online, just that it charges your account). I always keep a little bit money there that I would need for the next few days. Recharging is fast and in theory you could do it on the go, but you would need an internet connection for that, which is sometimes tricky to do while traveling. With a virtual card, you can only buy things online. Even though you could theoretically put a virtual card in your wallet on your phone, I personally prefer having a physical card, just in case.

As a resident of Japan, will the JPY on my Wise debit card be automatically converted at the mid-market rate whenever it's used to pay for something in another country? I'm trying to get my head around why travelers would hold multiple currencies.

The value of currencies fluctuate a lot. You can convert currency when the exchange rate is in your favor, and hold it in your wise account. Yes the JYP will be automaticlly converted, BUT, what if the exchange rate is better today? You can take advantage by holding that foriegn currency in your wise account.

Yes, it‘s very easy to return the money back. You could just wire it back. I usually use up the money at home by just paying with card. Unfortunately, I haven‘t been to those countries yet, so I am afraid I am not a big help on the second question. :)

Thanks for your helpful video! I was a little worried after hearing that there were some charges on balances. After some investigation, it seems that the fees on Wise vary a lot depending on what country you're in. In my country for example, all the fees have been dropped this year. Also, I started with Revolut and found that the experience can be vastly different to others depending on your country of citizenship. In my case, I received a Revolut account in my home country and it had vastly different capabilities (much less) than a friend of mine from Germany. I suggest doing an investigation based on your own country of citizenship.

Yes, you are right, the „details“ really vary from country to country. The charges on balances never were an issue for me because it is not my main bank account and I never keep that much money there. Only enough to travel and then I recharge as I go. But at least in my country, those charges are already history and now they even started paying me some interest every month. 😊

Thanks for the clarification - Revolut is actually a bank in Austria, but you are right about Wise. I could have been more clear in my review, but to be honest, none of the two is my main bank account where I keep my money, so I never worried too much about the deposits guarantee. I always just add a little bit of money as I go, also just in case my cards get hijacked while traveling. :)

Thank you for your review. I have a Revolut account which is great mainly using where I can buy currency and store at a great exchange rate on the card. I use other debit cards which charge no international exchange fees and are also very good on the exchange rate. I can freeze my debit cards when not in use too. The Revolut card is free here in Australia but the Wise Card has a nominal fee. ATM, I am finding it a little difficult to just have the Wise card activated for use on my Google Wallet. Regards, J

Thanks for the nice comparison. A quick question, withdrawing money from ATM using Revolut card on weekend wouldn't cost anything if that currency is already in your account ? For example one can exchange Euros to Dollars on Friday and withdraw on Sunday, it should be free or ?

The way I understand it, you should be right about that. But I don’t know 100%, because honestly, I have never had the chance to try this, because the currencies of the countries I travel to (like Brazilian Reais atm) are not available as account currencies. So I am stuck with the exchange rates. :)

I can't figure out which Germanic language you speak as your mother tongue: Swiss or Norwegian. Ah, now I got the fact: Austria. You speak softer than German but not as lilting as Swiss-German. So, now I learned something linguistic as well as financial. Thank you. I too am interested in both of these cards - Revolut I had some problems with and Wise has poor customer service. I will keep my bank in Canada, but use these for what they ere really designed for - cash in foreign currencies while travelling or doing business overseas, not so much for purchases. BTW, I can recall a time not that long ago (25 years?) when we got a better rate at the bank counter than the ATM when outside of my home country. Now, it seems there is no difference. BTW, great dentist!

Hm… good question. To get a 100% certain answer, maybe reach out to their customer service. I know from experience that Revolut „blocks“ payments when they seem unusual, a lot more than my bank does. I then have to go to the app and confirm that it is me, then it goes through the second time I try. That happens sometimes when I am in a new destination and use it in a new supermarket or try to pay online etc. So that makes me feel quite secure. But other than that, I always just keep a little bit of money available on the card itself. It is so easy to recharge it from my actual bank account when I need money, and I also have a little bit of money on the savings account (vault) in Revolut, which is not accessible for payments by the card, but I can move it there with a few clicks in the app. I personally see it more as a prepaid travel debit card, so I don‘t keep my money there. I just recharge as I go.

Wise has virtual cards too. It is so easy to move money, some banks (particularly USA) still make wiring money resemble a Space Shuttle launch..

Hi! I am not sure if everyone has the same cost structure of if they change a little bit by location of the cardholder, but we had no fees for paying with the card, currency exchange is free for up to 1000€ (except 1% on the weekend) and also no fees to withdraw money up to 200€ by Revolut, but most ATMs charge you quite a lot, usually 20 - 25 Reais (4-5€). However, we found out that when you go to Bradesco banks and use their ATMs, they don‘t charge any fees, so we did that most of the time. If you type „limits“ in the search bar in the Revolut app, you can access the limits page that shows you how much you already spent. I hope that helps. :)

I am not the best to give you a definitive answer because tax laws may differ from country to country, but I would be extremely suprised if money your father gifts you counts as taxable income. That being said, if it does, you will have to file it directly with your government and not with Wise.

Best would be to compare their fees with your existing credit card / debit card. For me it’s a good deal. If you already have better conditions, then you are right, there is no point in getting it.

Today I wanted to send my daughter who lives in Thailand some Christmas money. My Sparkasse wanted 35 € for sending 100 €! That's the fee of both banks and currency exchange. In January I'll move to Thailand and want to transfer my savings from my Sparkasse to a Thai bank. Again, it'll cost me almost 100 € for transferring 50.000 €. So I wonder if there's a cheaper way and came across WISE and Revolut. But once I am in Thailand I will use my Thai ATM card, so I don't really need a complicated banking service. Is there a better way to do a couple of transfers, and if not, which one would be better, WISE or Revolut?

It‘s crazy what some banks charge, no? I am not sure which one would be better in your situation, maybe you should compare the rates for wiring money? They should have them on their website somewhere. Other than that, if you don‘t really need money in a Thai bank account, what would speak against just having a Revolut or Wise account, keep some money there, use the cards for spending whenever you need something and save the expensive costs for transferring your money?

You can also send money to their bank accounts, but I guess it would be cheaper if they also had a Wise account? But I am not 100% sure about that, there are so many differences between the countries, so if I were you, I would ask their support. :)

You say that you have to pay fee for paying in the weekend with Revolut. I think you mean that if you try to pay in GBpound and you dont have GBpound in Revolut, but you have plenty euro and whatnot, that the app then exchanges some of your euro to Pound so the card-payment works in the visa-machine (small thing you stick your card in(or swipe)). Is this right ?

I usually travel to countries whose currencies are not available as an account in Revolut, so that’s why I have to pay the conversion fees and I always just leave all my money in Euros on my Revolut. But to me that sounds logic what you wrote - when you pay in GPB and you have money in GBP on your account that it can draw from, it should not charge you the exchange fees on the weekend. But I have no experience of my own with that usecase. :)

I used it as a card to travel Brazil as a tourist, so for me, charging it with my account from my homecountry and then spending money with the card was awesome. If you want to transfer money within Brazil, I am not sure if it would work and how high the fees would be.

I think which kind of account you get depends on where you live, but you can open other accounts in other currencies. But if you want to send money to and from a foreign account (and not charge it with a e.g. bank card), I guess there will be some fees.

Hope this hasn't been asked... is it possible to transfer money directly between a Revolut and a Wise account? The logic is that I prefer Revolut, but it isn't available for use as widely, which having an account on Wise would solve if they "speak to each other."

Recently there was a commenter that told me that you can actually charge Wise via a credit card, so you could use your Revolut card to charge Wise and vice versa. I am not sure if you want to “automate” that. On Revolut, you could set that it recharges your account regulary (e.g. everytime the balance falls below a certain threshold). So there it would work. I am not sure though if you can do the same on Wise. But you would be able to transfer your money back and forth in seconds. I really hope that helps! :)

Hi! I personally find it useful to have them both, because I am on the free plan on both of them. If I had to pick only one, I would probably choose the Revolut because the app is more targeted towards travelers, but both have their pros and cons.

Sorry to hear that your girlfriend was injured. She has no travel insurance that jumps in in that case? Other than that, I believe that it would be an option when you need to deal with different currencies. However, you need to have sufficient funds in your account, otherwise the payments will not go through.

Hi. Solved the problem about verification for wise. The photo wasn't clear enough. I repeated the process and managed taking a cleaner photo of my passport and it was verified within 5-10 minutes. The card was shipped within 3 days. Thanks! Revolut: I cancelled! Didn't like their customer service.
