Have liked and subscribed to your channel. Thanks for giving reviews on so many things.

Ah the wonders of a cheap Fresnel lens. Someone was digging in their attic and saw one of these for an old GameBoy and thought "omg, phones..." lol. Fresnel lenses are very poor for the use they're pitching. Conventional lenses, like reading glasses, are always going to be better. Fresnel lenses need to be kept in lighthouses and old school overhead projectors where they belong. They weren't _really_ made for looking through, but rather to take light from a point (say a flame or bulb filament) that is omni direction (emits in all 360 degrees from the source) and direct some of it all in one direction. Well, in a really general sense. This means the photons that hit the lens more or less straighten out and exit the lens more or less all on parallel trajectories. This produces that nice beam of light that light houses emit, and illuminate the bed of a overhead projector more evenly. They were used in lighthouses mainly because conventional lenses or refraction solutions were very large, heavy, expensive, and not really practical. Anyway, not an expert, just sharing my 2cents. =3

It's just a fresnel lens in a cheap plastic frame and stand, isn't it? Fresnel lenses have their uses, mainly that they can be flexible and can increase magification without being thick, but they're prone to distortion which can be preferable for certain applications, but not when someone wants maximum clarity for things like reading or watching video. Also, they claim to increase it by 300%, that means it should be 4x, not 3x (as an 'increase of 100%' would be 2x). If they had said 'to 300%', than yes it would be 3x, but instead they went additive, instead of a straight multiplier.

The one thing I learned from dating a film major who did work on infomercials... The best way to view this things is from someone with a disability. For someone with a disability much worse than the norm. When my grandfather lost his glasses he used his phone to be able to see. Would put the phone to the correct depth to see and used the video of the phone to see what he was looking at. So something that would magnify would be good for him as he was legally blind without his glasses.

The reflections are intrinsic to this kind of lens, called Fresnel lens, so you can't really avoid it. Also, I saw a guy sell those in a train, obviously a knockoff, and it had worse reflections but it enlarged way more too. Edit: by "enlarge your screen by 300%", it wasn't really clear to me but I guess it is about area? So 4 times the area is 2 time each dimension (width and height).

In the case of Iphone 5, it does increase its area by more than 300%. Magnavision: 17cm x 10cm = 170 cm2 Iphone 5: 9 cm x 5.2cm = 46.8 cm2 Which is an increase of about 360%. So it depends on the phone.
@ddegn6 жыл бұрын
I was looking to see if someone use the area for the size comparison. Thanks for doing the math so I didn't have to. While I suppose one could use the area as you did (and as I was about to), in general magnification isn't normally reported this way. Normally something with 3x magnification should produce a 9x image area. I think this is one of those "marketers' specifications" we see all to often on gizmos like this.
