Magneto Speed Sporter vs V3: Which One Should You Buy?

Here’s a quick video showing some of the differences between the Sporter version and the V3 model. The Sporter fits my needs perfectly and will get the job done for sure. Long term durability might be a concern due to the cheaper build quality but I’ll report back on that later! Y’all have a good one!

a tip for everyone ; I placed a small piece of velcro (female side) on the inside of that nylon strap where it touches the barrel just to help with tightness and slipping on a stainless steel barrel. Works very well and would highly recommend doing same guys even if your barrel is painted. You get a real snug feeing when you tighten the thumb nut. :) 👍

One of my friends just bought a Garmin Chronograph. Sold me his V3 at a great buddy price. Looking forward to checking all these different 300 Blackout loads I've worked up.

Thanks for pointing out the differences. I've got a V3 which I bought before the spotter model was available. It's been the most reliable and accurate chrono I've ever owned. It has always worked. Have fun with your new Sporter!

Great video. One thing i would add is that if you want to chrono pistol at all then the v3 with the pic rail adapter makes that possible . I only own the sporter as well and i was disappointed when i realized the pic rail adapter only applies to the v3 model. Thanks for sharing.

I just bought the sporter for exactly the same reasons as in the video. It will do the job, and I am not keen on spending a shit load of money on a radar that needs to be set up and adjusted, which is often a complicated procedure especially here in Germany anyway (everyone has to stop shooting on the range when someone has to go beyond the barrier - this is not how to make friends on the range). Rather spend the money on more shooting. Cheers from overseas

I wish the sporter had the same mounting system as the v3, $450 bucks is ridiculous just to be able to mount it to a suppressor.

I have the sporter and use wood dowels to verify bayonet clearance. For 25s and up a quarter inch works just fine. I also have a 3/16inch for my .204 and 6mm. They are about 12 inches long. Of course you can look down the barrel on bolts and single shots

As far as pistol stuff ???? I’m on the same page as you as far as all I need is velocity data to make better Ammo. But I need to be able to use the Sport or on my pistols

I bought the Sporter and sent it back after one session. Super cheap construction, could tell it wasn't gonna last at all. Had to adjust it after every shot due to sliding forward. On a muzzle braked 30-06AI so no crazy recoil.

That’s a great question…I always write the velocities down as they come in and go back and delete stuff so I haven’t run into an issue with that yet. I’ve gone up to 60 shots without deleting the info though.

Big difference is v3 does pistol, rimfire and others Sporter does not.

Alignment rod under $5 at local hardware store. I just got the sporter and plan to try it out tomorrow on a ladder test. I think magnetospeed could send a 1/4" rod out with a $180 sporter model, just my two cents, but I picked a rod up for $2.80 at Cole's hardware.

@@alabamareloader What I have seen from reviews of you and other guys out there I believe I will be pleased with my purchase. Over all I think it's going to be a great asset to my load data. I'm glad someone else agrees with me with the alignment rod, I mean for what would cost them maybe $1 per sporter it would be one more step to keep human error out of shooting off the end of the bayonet. Great video, I appreciate watching reviews to better help me spend my money wisely.

Will the sporter model measure subsonic rifle velocities ?

It doesn’t work for rim fire stuff but it does say it works with center fire stuff like rifles and revolvers so I bet it would. Can’t seem to find a velocity minimum on the website though.

Good concept for the video, but execution could use some help here. Be more organized & prepare before starting your video. Have the units disassembled & parts laid out side by side BEFORE beginning. These are essential for doing comparison videos. Unfortunately this fell short. Plan and prepare better before making a video if you want more likes/followers. Best.
