Interesting game. A very good example that, even if you are the World Champion, if you disregard the principles in the opening, you'll get in huge trouble. Magnus went all in a pawn-grabbing fest, while Mamedyarov just developed his pieces, and he ended up in decisive advantage. I always have the memory that Siegbert Tarrasch once commented on that "grabbing pawns in the opening is dangerous", but I didn't find the source, but I found this quote which also applies to this game: “It is not enough to be a good player... you must also play well”

Magnus sure messed up on that one. But a good point is made here in chess. Playing on after a blunder until the game is clearly out of reach, as Agad puts it, "make your opponent work for the meal" sometimes frustrates your foe and they'll occasionally return with a blunder of their own. It's happened many times in my own games on each side of the ledger. I like to think more often on the positive side.

I'm not sure where the culture of resigning the game came from. I'd say it's more respectful to play the game out until the end, the fact that game is won doesn't mean it's easy, you still have to make just as good moves. I'd say it's fine to play at least few moves into the game, no need to make every single move until opponent promotes and ladder checkmates, but let him earn the win, not just let him have his trap opening.

I think magnus did this intentionally to prepare himself for the world championship match. He wanted to see how the game would go after making a new move. Not 100% sure but I think he did and if he did it’s super clever.

You must be seriously joking about 5...Qa5 being a new game. Mamedyarov himself has at least 3 games in the database, against MVL and Grischuk (twice). There are tons of master games with this position! I cannot find a game with 7. Bd2 though - in the 2 previous games Mamedyarov had the position after 6...Qxc5 (both vs Grischuk) he played 8. Qa4, which presumably is what Magnus was expecting. After Bd2, black can transpose to known positions with 0-0 or d6 instead of Qxc4.

So nice to see an opponent take advantage of a Magnus mistake. They need to do it more often, it happens more frequently than most believe.

Not sure what Magnus was thinking. Super GMs don’t just give away free pawns.

I guess just wanted to try something different and have some fun, or maybe get into the competition's heads that he might be vulnerable when he knows exactly what he's doing
