For those who are wondering, the "12 seconds" refer to the total time it took Magnus to make all of his own moves according to the chess clock. Gate's moves are counted separately. That's why it's "12 seconds" despite the video being over a minute.

@@cliffkaiiju977 idk but I think keeping it wet generally is just good for a wood if it's a wooden bar plus they can slide glasses if they really want to, they can't really do that if it's dry but if theres a ton of people with their arms on it that would soak it up and it wouldn't really work. I dunno about that. He went for an uncommon defense to shake a relative novice out of their comfort zone, but each move after that looked like basically just the best move in the position. I didn't see any moves that looked like they were alternatives to what he would have played against any other player make it flashy, just very straightforward pressure on a glaring weakness Gates made on move 3 until the kingside was forced open.
@manuv8

@imperator9343 in front of an audience that doesn't know chess, the only way to be flashy is to mate as fast as possible. It's not like they would have been able to tell a beautifully intricated checkmate from a fool's mate.

I don't think we truly appreciate how good people at the highest level of competition are at their craft until they go up against normies. Whether it be sports, video games, board games, art, you name it. I think one of the best examples of this is the Schallenge, for those who don't know, this is where Brian Scalabrine, who was a marginal player in the NBA and is long since retired, plays regular people who call him out to a game of 1 on 1 and he destroys them every time. He has one of the best all time quotes..."Yeah I sucked as a player in the NBA, but I'm still closer to Lebron then you are to me."

That's because he knows the opening lines, which typically end up locked into a few set ones after the first two moves. For example, in a King's Knight Opening Normal variation (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6), White basically has two options: 3.Bc4, the Italian Game, and 3.Bb5, the Ruy Lopez. After either of these openings, Black has only a single-digit number of viable options.

It’s obviously because of how fast he was moving it. I found it funny too.

I have played a full game of chess exactly four times. It interests me, just never really played or cared to become good. Dunno why. Magnus is the man.

Anyone who is highly skilled at any game or sport knows playing vs a fellow top level player and playing vs a beginner is totally different. Magnus isn't trying to play some perfect theoretical opening, but rather just trying to win as fast as he can by using his experience to know what mistakes someone like Bill is likely to make.

Its such a shame that the host didn't let Magnus talk a lot in this show. After the chess match both Bill and Magnus wanted to discuss the game but the host cut it too short. Mainly Magnus had 30 seconds on the clock.
