He already lost before the game started, you see the fear in his eyes, hoping Magus doesn't show up, then he just plays to lose. Plays the modern defense, doesn't castle, pushes his f pawn, opens the d file himself, puts his king in the open d file. That's suicide against Magnus. It was almost like he was asking Magnus to end it quickly.

@@hariharang8872 Not a chess guy. But I don't think this is a checkmate. It's just that the opponent realised based on the current layout of the board and the progression of moves available that would follow, would eventually result in a checkmate. Any chess people feel free to correct me.

After black takes the knight Magnus will take the bishop and after the rook takes back, Magnus can play his rook to a7 and fork the king and the knight. And if black doesn’t take the knight and saves his rook then the bishop will die.

@skwebjacob Yes, but he took it with his king, which meant that his king could no longer castle. As a result, his rooks were stuck in the corners. If he had taken it with the knight, he wouldn't have had those problems.

I think taking with the king was correct. After NxQ, Nb5 attacks both a7 and c7. Black doesn’t have time to castle and defend those threats.

After 18..Bxc4 19.Nxe8 Bf8 20.b3 Be6 Black also loses the pawn on f6. And after 19..Bh8 20.b3 Be6 21.Nd6+ Nxd6 22.Rxd6 Black is down the exchange and his position is a total shipwreck.

Too much control and activity, especially the open rook file that white dominates. Black won't make it in time and will be helpless in White's attack

FIDE shows Shimanov with a blitz rating of 2608, 2589 in rapid and 2593 in std (for the beginning of Jan - that probably doesn't include this match.) At his peak he had an elo of 2664 back in 2013.

After taking the knight there will be an exchange of pieces after which Magnus forks the king and knight, or if black decides not to take he will lose his bishop without compensation. His position is already pretty awkward anyway so either of those situations is a guaranteed loss at this level.

It happens to the best. Ding had a catastrophic blunder in Game 14 to lose the World Championship. Even Magnus played terrible in the one game he lost at the Olympiad (and he was white.)
