There are two types of chess Grandmasters. The hyper-expressive type whose faces are an open highway to their soul, like Kramnik, Hans Niemann, Garry Kasparov, and Hikaru Nakamura. Then there’s the type who is ever-so-calm and stoic when they're on the board, like Ding Liren, Vishy Anand, and quite a few others.

You can draw every day if you want to, but it is not always necessary. But you should also learn to recognize that feeling motivated to draw is a fleeting emotion. And sometimes, it might require discipline to keep going. You should challenge yourself and see how far you can go but don't overdo it.

Is that easy to see is not a draw in hikarus match? Im not good playing but is kinda disrespecting by the commentators to judge that way having a computer.
@m0DuL
@m0DuL 9 ай бұрын
No, it shouldn't be easy. But I think the main point is that Hikaru didn't even attempt to win that game. Didn't try to open the position with his pawns and trick Magnus somehow, when being on a plus material (12>10). They also both had a decent time on clocks. That's why Magnus and commentators were suprised I think.

Basically that game only 2 results were possible. Either Hikaru wins or it's a draw anyway. So it was weird Hikaru went for a draw and didn't even try to push. Generally Queen vs 2 bishops, Queen is much more superior. But again it was Magnus on the other end, so he would have probably held anyways. Still Hikaru should have tried since there was no risk. Hikaru has a video on this too.

Depends on the situation. It might be at a tournament and not be necessary to win. That’s usually the most common reason I think. To use an example from the clips shown, when Magnus and Hikaru played the bongcloud and made a draw they were in the group stage at a tournament. Both had already got enough points to make it to the next round. Rather than play the game they chose to make a draw.
@sonofbattles
@sonofbattles 7 ай бұрын
It could also be because you are afraid of losing. Anish Giri offered a draw in the second clip, even though Magnus had the black pieces (so Giri had the advantage, if only from a gameplay perspective, lol). At that time, in 2019, Magnus was then the reigning four-time blitz world champion, and had been ranked number one in the world since 2011, while Giri was “merely a super grandmaster” to Carlsen. What makes it really funny for Giri to offer a draw to Magnus after the fourth move is their histories. As a super-conservative player that avoids taking risks, Giri draws a lot, while Magnus is notorious for refusing draws because he plays to win. So, after Giri opens with the Queen’s Gambit, and Carlsen responds with the Slav (which is a solid defense in its own right), Giri realized immediately that he probably wasn’t going to win. You can watch that game here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5zHgXhsh9WZo8ksi=Or0K01cds0XFhNh5

@@jacobs5518 I'm guessing he means something like the Bongcloud game, where either the players have agreed in advance to make a quick draw or they seem to decide it pretty much as soon as they sit down at the board/screen. The Bongcloud might have had some general amusement value, but there was nothing interesting about it as a chess game.
