The 2022 Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 15-30 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen heads the field, which includes stars such as 2020 Champion Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If there is a tie for first place the top two after tiebreaks then play a 2-game blitz (5+3) playoff and, if still tied, an Armageddon game. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. I am a noob so don't take my word for it but I think magnus believes the b5 pawn is weak. The white diagnol the fianchettoed bishop controlled was extremely strong making the the knight weak. And given that magnus doubled up on the A file, the Queen defending the knight was weak as well. You probably have to realise all of that and then play the exact move order to make sure you are attacking all of these weaknesses, that is what makes this insane because he defended the d4 pawn before starting this sequence. And someone like me only realises that this is an attack after all is said and done.

Tied with Magnus on the first place, playing excellent chess in the last few days, I think this was really a bold move to go all out against Magnus with the black pieces. He could have played a safe line and maybe played for a draw and then could have tried to beat others while tied with Magnus for the top spot. But this is what makes him diffrent. Amazing play as always by Magnus but kudos to Mamedyarov for not settling and playing safe.

I'm not a really strong chess player, nor do I have a vast knowledge of the game and its history, but it really seems like Magnus is on another level than anybody else in History. I mean, I know some guys like Morphy, Fischer, Tal, etc... were way above all their peers at the time, but Magnus manages to do that in the computer area, in classical time format. Because to me, it feels like this legendary players could always use tricks to gain an edge early on, by complicating the game, but nowadays you have to get in these incredibly drawish positions, that both players have prepared all the way to move 10-15, and from there, gain an advantage on your opponent. Anyway, to me he's the best chess player in History, and I get why he's starting to get bored with classical chess.
@Dakiller1243
@Dakiller1243 2 жыл бұрын
He's not bored with classical chess. He just thinks the amount of time to prepare for WCC is not worth the effort considering he already has 5 championships. He literally told he will still play chess professionally even if he decides not to play wcc. As for magnus being the goat, he probably will be in a few years no debate.
@MrSupernova111
@MrSupernova111 2 жыл бұрын
Even in the computer era elite players make all kinds of mistakes - including the great Magnus. There is no comparison with players of the past like Morphy, Capablanca, Fischer, and Kasparov. When Magnus starts steamrolling his opponents like the players I listed then he can be considered the GOAT. In the meantime, Magnus is the best we got and that's it.
@Dakiller1243
@Dakiller1243 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrSupernova111 those players in those times didnt have a supercomputer. One match of carlsen vs nepo literally had the most accurate match ever. Sorry to burst your bubble but super gm's today wont be dominated as hard as you think by those people.
@MrSupernova111
@MrSupernova111 2 жыл бұрын
@Ze TheGame . The GOAT distinction goes to the most dominant. Its not Carlsen - not by a landslide. Also, the fact that you think that someone like Morphy, Capablanca or Fischer couldn't be just as dominant today, with the same resources as today's players, is laughable. This is why we compare dominance - otherwise the latest generation is by default always the GOAT which is stupid.
@MrSupernova111
@MrSupernova111 2 жыл бұрын
