You may have seen on our Facebook that it's been a pretty rough week for us. Jordan has been in and out of the hospital dealing with unexplained health issues. They've done oodles of testing and our best guess is that it's severe acid reflux. It could potentially be more, which is why he'll have an endoscopy done as soon as the worst of the symptoms subside. Thank you to everyone who has sent encouraging words and advice our way! Hoping to have more answers and a healthy Jordan muy pronto. P.S. You can see all our updates with more details on www.Facebook.com/TangerineTravels

You know, if you ever get a mild case of acid reflux at night, sleep on your left side. It minimizes the acid greatly. Sleeping on your right side will just aggravate it more.

When you stay in MAHAHUAL you need to show the restaurants and tour operators your hotel key and that opens up the Mexican prices. Also there is a money exchange and ATM going south from HOTEL MEXICO LINDO at the end of the block your turn left to the beach and there’s the money exchange and ATM, also bar restaurant YAYA BEACH is very warm and welcoming people there even pacha mama and CABALLO blanco hotels and at 40 cañones hotel is very nice restaurant breakfast, lunch and dinner , you traveled enough to stop acting like your are lost, like I said show that you are in town for a few days apart yourselves from looking like you came of the cruise ships. Show your hotel key introduce yourselves to the staff. Then you will get the Mexican menu.

I am an American from Texas. I have lived here in Mahahaul for two years. I bought a house on the beach and the people here are constantly trying to rip off the gringo when we have someone come to our house to do any kind of work they charge extra because we are gringos, you have to be careful when you shop to be sure you don’t get charged extra. 😅 my wife and I have been talking about going back to the states because we are sick of being treated like tourist and it is true what y’all say about being charged extra at the restaurant if you pay in US dollars But that is the case with everything here if you’re a gringo, you’re gonna get charged extra. My wife is Argentine. She speaks the Spanish language very well and we just make them believe that she is Mexican so we do not get stuck with higher prices everywhere we go. Hay en Joy Your video Thank You Very Much

I am quite pleased that according to this couple Mahahual received a negative vote. When I visited Mexico a few years ago I was doing so to find a town that I intended to move to. Hands down, I chose Mahahual. The very reasons that it appealed to me are the reasons that other people dislike it. I love the fact that it was not tourist-friendly and that the economy was based on the cruise ship tourists and not daily tourist visitors arriving by vehicle. The people there were incredibly nice and all of the shopping and foods were fantastic. I loved that the town was small and the prices were definitely right. If you speak Spanish and are paying with the local currency you have got it made. I am looking forward to purchasing land as close by as possible and opening a food cart that caters to the cruise ship tourists. I love the fact that the town shut down when the tourists disappear and that the life in the town became local-based. If you are a tourist and want to visit a place that is very touristy this is definitely not it. I love the fact that it is rural and hard to get to and that the activity in the town is very minimal. Happy to agree that those seeking something else can just stay away. Can't wait to move there!

I love Mahahual. It's easy to get there these days from Cancun by ADO bus through Playa. And if you're staying there for a week or longer the folks in the restaurants and beach clubs get to know you and you get the locals prices. Yes, they have a set price of $8 for a cab ride from the port, but you can put 3 or 4 people in a cab to lower the per person price. And they have a tram that runs from the port for just $2. Those prices are waaaay cheaper than just about any other cruise port in the Caribbean. It's a bargain for the cruisers and allows the cabbies to make a decent wage. Mahahual was a very poor fishing village, but now residents share their beautiful beaches with thousands of visitors a day and the residents are enjoying a little prosperity. As a visitor I enjoy the two faces of Mahahual - the bustle when the cruise ships are in and then the quiet when the day trippers leave. And even when the Malecon area is crowded with Cruise Commandos you can drive about 10 minutes north or south and enjoy miles and miles of empty beaches. Oh, and I almost forgot-the best shop for silver jewelry in Quintana Roo is in Mahaual - Silver Reef is run by David and Suri Benitez. They have been there since 2002. David hand makes much of the jewelry and sells it by weight, adding a few pesos for his labor.

My husband and I went to Mahaual exactly 1 year ago in July and I didn’t enjoy it at all because there was a TON of seaweed and it smelled horrible. What I can tell you is that We did have the best snorkeling experience ever! We swam with the sea turtles. And that alone made my visit to Mahaual worth it.

I also live in Baja Mexico, have for 13 years. We have similar issues with gringo prices. My wife is Mexicana and always tells me to hide when she goes shopping as she knows they will ask more if they see me. I would like to check out this part of QR Mexico, I like more laid back smaller less traveled places. We love Oaxaca beaches. Glad to hear the comments from both you Chuck and the video makers. My parents, who are Mexican-born... speak Spanish as a first language... AND had pesos... but came on a cruise ship... had a less than good time in Mahahual and Cozumel because of the constant nickel-and-diming. They still kept getting every price in USD, and when they asked how much in pesos it was actually slightly more expensive than if they just paid in USD. They kept pointing out they understand the locals have to make a living, but they ask for too much in terms of price and not every tourist is a millionaire. They felt it was especially insulting that even as fellow Mexicans who understand the culture they were receiving this scammy treatment. No one should be treated that way, it's eventually just going to turn people off from coming there.

What a pity that you did not explore the "other part" of Mahahual. Indeed the town of Mahahual is crowded on cruise ship days but if you would have gone a little bit more south of the town (2 miles) you would have found empty, pristine beaches and small ecological hotels (pet-friendly!) and restaurants charging you in pesos. Pure nature, waking up with only the sound of birds and waves. You could have gone on a sailing tour with a catamaran and do some snorkeling, kayaking, stand up paddling or kitesurfing etc. The "rocks" you saw...is actually a coral reef. Unfortunately the reef in town is dead, but south of Mahahual there are lots of beautiful places for snorkeling and diving. For people who like nature & watersport...Mahahual has a lot to offer...

It's too bad that you weren't able to take the time to get to know Mahahual. Fernando is a friend. I have family that lives there and many friends that I made through my visits. If you had done your research, you would have known that there are literally 1000 people in this town. It is a port town, so of course they cater to the cruises. It's disappointing that anyone might feel discouraged on visiting as it is absolutely my favorite place in Mexico. Hands down.

We stayed for 10 days a few years ago and would agree this is our favorite destination in Mexico. Days when the ships are in port we visited Xcalak, Bacalar and one day farther North toward Mayan Garden Hotel. The snorkeling and diving is excellent and I will return soon and visit Banco Chinchoro. The people in town are super friendly and not once did we feel threatened, unsafe, offered drugs or like someone was trying to scam us. In fact I would venture it is one of the safest places I've ever visited. We were there during Carnival and it was so nice to see the townsfolk out enjoying themselves, about every kid we saw had both parents and such a wholesome scene!

Mahahual has been an excellent destination during the pandemic, it changed the dynamic of the place and now the local economy if more focused on Mexican and European visitors, they have adapted well to the current situation. I come here to dive as this area is nearest to Banco Chinchorro and Xcalac the two best dive locations on the peninsula BRING Plenty PESOS ! Negotiate and pay in pesos, this is Mexico. Fly into Chetumal from there it is an easy 1:45 drive, skip the trip from Cancun through Playa de Carmen /Tulum BS. The lodging/food/beaches and activities are good and less $$ . This is a small place and easy learn in a day or so. When the Cruise ships come back just stay south of malicon and avoid the throngs.

We have been to Mahahual twice and loved it. The last time was Jan. 2018. It’s certainly off the beaten track and we were charmed the first time. We stayed south of town in a great place (which is no longer showing on AirBnB) and enjoyed the peace and quiet. In 2018 we could see the change coming, more money for the locals during cruise season, and worried how they manage during the off season. The mass tourism has changed the town and we probably won’t go back.

Best thing of Majahual high volume cruise tourism is it makes them keep the road so you can go to Xcalak 30 miles south and take a spectacular dive at Chinchorro, one of the best scuba diving spots in the world. Or a fly-fishing tour in “Bacalar Chico” Town too is a small beach town, much like Bacalar-by-the-beach.

Mahahual has 2 "faces". 1 face is the boardwalk (1 km long) with lots of restaurants mainly attending to cruise ships. Thats the Mahahual this video is about. But if you go just behind that boardwalk, and/or a little bit more south of it you will the "other face" of mahahual. With pristine and secluded beaches, with small, eco friendly places, hotels and restaurants who will charge you in pesos. And who have nothing to do with cruise ships at all. Staying north and south of mahahual you can easily avoid all cruise ship activity and have a great stay and enjoy all kind of water activities like snorkeling, diving, kayaking, stand up paddling, etc etc. Unfortunately this video does not cover that other face of Mahahual, and therefor its kind of short-sided in my opinion. Bacalar is also very beautiful, and certainly worth a visit. As I always do, I recommend visiting both places. To everybody: Just ask and I will happily recommend places to stay in both towns
@TangerineTravels5 жыл бұрын
It's impossible to see everything there is to see in just one week, so your'e right that we probably missed some parts of it. But if we had to choose between Bacalar and Mahahual, we'd choose Bacalar because we enjoyed all the faces we saw of that town.

Seriously, what's the point of going to another country if MOST everything there is in English and MOST places accept U.S. dollars? Where's the cultural experience of that country? I'll be moving to a small, gated community in San Antonio (between Ajijic and Chapala) a month from now and excited about living there until my lease expires in October (the owners of my rental return from Boise, ID on November 1st). I'll be looking for another location to live in Mexico during those 6 months. ¡Deseame buena suerte!

@@Trinity369xoxo The tourist visa you receive when you first arrive is good for 6 months, then you have to leave for a couple days before you can return for another 6 months.

Papa Rick That's because a lot of tourist ARE NOT interested in anything regarding culture, rather, they just wanna party, get drunk, get drugs for cheap and overall get wasted in every sense of the word, I work with tourist, I know from first hand experience, of course not everyone is as described however it's very common.........🤔🙄😳

We have been to Costa Maya 3 times by cruise ship. It felt so isolated that we really thought it was an island. 1st time was to dive which they claimed was the only place available, around 1 mile south of the ship. The price was double the cost of every other port of call for diving. Crappy little pontoon boat that leaked gas and so windy they called off the 2nd dive. We could have swam from shore to the dive site!! Total rip off! Beautiful under world though. Next two times we decided to skip the diving and went by bus 45 minutes through a flat waste land to a beach resort that offered beach chairs and free drinks ( didn't know about that part, great surprise). Costa Maya was our least favorite port of call. I think we were diving at or near Mahahual. Sorry you're sick and hope you get better soon! We were there 3 years in a row 7,6,and 5 years ago before having land vacations in Cozumel and the West End of Roatan, Honduras. Diving of course.

Nice to see your thoughts on staying right in town. Our only mahahual experience was on a cruise ship, we immediately took a private taxi 5 miles South of town to a private beach catering to cruisers for 40 bucks A-day. private beach, private service, all you can drink and eat, free cab ride back to the ship. it was spectacular. We've always wondered what coming down to town for a week would be like. Thanks. Perhaps Bacalar or Tulum.

Wife and I were there a little over a year ago. Really didn’t see much of the town since we were rushed from the cruise ship to buses to Mayan ruins then back to town. We had 5 minutes to get back on the boat. Hope you feel better soon.

And yet another beautiful and pueblo mágico here, Mahahual! Beautiful and crystalline waters, the palms, the good food, no doubt about Beauty attracts beauty(Maddie)! ;)

Is Mahahual one of the new additions to the Pueblo Magico list? I didn't think it was one. The waters at least are very magical! :) Thank you for the lovely compliment, Joe!

@@TangerineTravels Well, noticing the multicolored name like in other pueblos mágicos I took it as a denominated pueblo mágico, but the town probably isn't much(not many atms around,lol)but like you say, the waters are very magical! :)

Good to know about this. Kinda seems like my reaction to Cozumel when I was there....everything was priced in dollars, and everything seemed to close as the cruise ships pulled away. And they really wanted those dollars...I paid for a taxi in pesos and the cab driver was SO not happy. Are the cruise ship people coming in from Costa Maya, or is there another port closer to Mahahual? I stopped at Costa Maya on a cruise ship once and wasn't impressed...didnt seem like much there, nor were there a lot of taxis ready to bring people over. Honestly, my wife and I just got off the ship and got stupid drunk at one of the bars in the port area....the good thing is that we learned that we liked mezcal lol.... Anyway, keep us posted about Jordan. We're all thinking of him and keeping our fingers crossed for a more firm diagnosis and a speedy recovery!

_"the good thing is that we learned that we liked mezcal lol...."_ I laughed out loud at this part. When it comes to mezcal, there's always a good time to be had haha. Thanks for thinking of Jordan! We still don't have a firm diagnosis yet, but signs are pointing to extremely bad acid reflux. Things are calming down a bit after some drastic diet changes.

I went on a cruise and went to Maya Chan Beach and was so disappointed that the water was NOT clear. It is only 5.3 km south of pez Quadro. It was a nice place except for the lack of clear blue water. A friend actually did an excersion to Bacalar on her trip and also had great water. Thanks for the video. I now know there really is "Cozumel clear" water in Mahahaul. Keep up the good work!

Mahahual was conceived for cruises, since it is not possible to build many hotels, there is many mangroves and it is very protected, so that people have to get their money from the cruises, currently is the second destination for cruises in Mexico only after Cozumel.
@marciabales4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for such a well thought out review. I own a little hotel 20 km north of the town center, and you are absolutely right about everything you said. However, Mahahual gets under your skin if you take the time to explore just a little bit more. For example, if you walk a bit further south on the Malecon, you will find that the cruise ship people usually don't go there. The beaches are exquisite there and its mostly locals and the prices are reasonable. And perhaps you didn't notice the local hangouts -- in a small town, it doesn't take lont to fine them. Its truly a place of hidden gems waiting to be discovered just by leaving the town center. We all make the same complaints about the menus and I tell my guests to stay away from any place that sounds too commercial (like Big mama's and Crazy Lobster). My favorite in NO-Och -Kay. you would have loved it.

There is not a single bank in Mahahual believe it or not. They don’t even have an OXXO or 7-11 which is shocking considering the town size. It’s not a big town by any means but we’ve seen smaller pueblos with multiple OXXOs.
