Here in the U.S. I was taught, while attending Jr. High school back in the 80's, that the world map was incorrect in its proportions, and it was explained that this was due to the challenge in showing a spherical object on a flat surface. I'm surprised this hasn't been taught to so many people in all places seemingly... It's fairly easy I think to understand the narration, though it does some effort, totally different than my states accents by miles!

You was lied too… as you can see majority of these maps have the title “political” in them. This tells you a political ideology influenced the creation of these distorted maps. The political ideology being white supremacy … as the northern hemisphere is made up of white countries they have been enlarged to highlight their importance. This is why when he drags India to the north it gets bigger. This is one of many ways education installs said ideology I our minds from young. If what your saying is true then surely the shrink would be in the tips of the southern and northern hemispheres as as globes circumference is smallest at these points and the countries would be enlarged along the equator as the circumference is the largest. The only 100% accurate world maps are those on a sphere, a.k.a. a model globe. Paper maps on a smaller scale, local maps for instance, are accurate enough for many practical purposes. A good local map (UK Ordnance Survey, for instance) in addition to the rectangular grid will also show the convergence of lines of longtitude.

The best way is to obtain a model globe of the earth. It makes many concepts a little clearer, such as Great Circle Routes taken by aircraft and how the tilt of the earth causes the seasons. That's in addition to the impossibility of perfectly representing the earth on a flat paper map.

There is nothing "incorect" about the Mercator projection map. It's a map made for easy navigation. It was never meant to be the only map in the classroom. All flat maps get distorted in size, shape, or area. It's American public school teachers who are lacking big time in very basic geography. They can't teach what they don't know. No one has lied. Imagine having a transparent globe with a light bulb inside it. Now imagine placing a paper cylinder over it. The paper will touch the equator and this area will project with little distortion onto the paper. The areas close to the poles will be elongated with a lot of distortion. Again, not the fault of a navigation map. The fault lies in not examing a variety of maps and globes to make students aware of what happens when you flatten out an imperfectly round earth or, as we call it in the science of geography, a geoid. There are so many projections out there. Geographers pick the the "correct" one for the job at hand.

It depends what you mean by "correct". No flat representation of the Earth (as in, no map) can be correct. The map you show as "correct" may have the correct area, but it doesn't preserve directions and it doesn't look like it preserves shape. The only accurate representation of the Earth is as a 3D globe. Maps that preserve direction (such as Mercator projections) are way more useful than those that preserve area.

I get that its hard to project a sphere onto a flat surface but that isnt an excuse to misrepresent certain countries. Mainly 3rd world countries. No way should iceland be depicted larger than Africa. At the very least, depict countries sizes the right way. I do believe the Mercator Projection map projects 3rd world countries or "brown and black" countries as lesser due to their size. Its human nature to see something big and something small, then assume the bigger thing is more important. I also think the map is upside down. There are 1000 ways to Sunday to project a sphere onto a plane. None of them are accurate because you can't unfold a sphere without distortion. The 'normal' projection map everyone knows is the 'Mercator' projection and we all know that had some non-altruistic political motivations to make the Northern Hemisphere appear as big as possible. Now, if you directly map each continent by size and lay them all out for comparison, then the relative distances between them is distorted instead. There is no way around this - something will always be wrong. And why is North UP anyway? The best way to compare two countries is to take TWO side by side 3D global maps and put/spin each country to the middle of each map. It is not perfect, but good enough to get the real picture in your mind. Peace.

Thanks Normal for the idea to reduce the distortion during mapping any country .... but again thier may be another problem regarding mapping .... that is when we draw world map than we have to use a particular type of projection that will be applicable for the entire globle... for instance we can not use multiple projections on the same surface map.... if your idea will apply than we should to focus on particular country .... concentrate only in the center of the country .... that may create another kind of distortions again.... so, to find the solution is very tough task dear.... yes this is universal truth some scintist or cartographer have their political support to show bigger much as possible to show .... to northern hemisphere particularly to mid latitude countries ... obioulsy now time to understand that we should to use that projection which can show less distortions in their shape and size during mapping.... Inherent not _scientifically and practically correct_ .. the reason there are so many different flat maps of the Earth is because each one preserves different metrics of the Earth ( bearing, distance, size, shape) .. the Gleason Map distorts distance, size and shape thoroughly .. bearings are ONLY correct from the North Pole to any other location .. the distortion increases the farther south you go HAM and other radio operators will buy a similar AE map with their location at the center ( rather than the North Pole ) so they know what lies in the direction their antenna is pointed
