Maine family's dogs spread autumn joy by jumping in leaf piles

In our increasingly outraged America, even the lowly leaf is subject to controversy, with folks upset about the raking and the bagging and mad about the blowing and the scooping. But there is at least one place left in America where pure autumn joy can still be found. Steve Hartman goes "On the Road" to Freeport, Maine, where a family's dogs are over the moon to simply be jumping in piles of leaves.

We had 2 cocker spaniels, one black and one buff, who loved to play this game with a twist. We'd throw a bright green baseball in a huge pile and they'd fly after it. The funniest times were when they both went into the pile but neither found the ball. Two heads would pop up, look at each other, and say, "Did you find it?" "No, did you?" "No. Let's dive again!" And both dogs would resubmerge until one emerged triumphant. Rest in peace, Prissie and Jennie. You were truly gifts from G-d.

Me too in Pennsylvania. There was a nearby company with a large piece of land and trees. We walked by there on our way home from school, and someone would take the leaves into a large pile and leave it there. All the kids would run over and jump in the pile when we saw it! We jumped and jumped until the pile was flat. Next day, the leaves were in a huge pile again and we run over and jump! When I look back, imagine one of the employees would keep any eye out and yell “they’re here!” Then everyone would run to the windows and watch the kids having a ball! 😂 At least, that’s what I hope was happening. ❤

I discovered Stella 4 years ago when we had to put our beloved Jack down during Covid who looked exactly like Stella. I poured my heart out that day on one of Stellas videos reflecting on our loss of Jack and how Stellas video put a ray of sunshine into a very terrible time. Not being able to spend the final hours of our dog’s life together because of the Covid restrictions but that’s another subject. Fast forward to today, we now have 2 more English Labradors. One is 4 years and the other a puppy just 3 months old. Maximus and Leonidas. To those out there on the verge of losing a pet, you have my sympathy. They are a big part of your family. Thanks again Stella. You put a big smile on my face again. Go on with your bad self.
