Toronto has two airports: Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is the main airport with many airlines flying to places all around the world. It is located just outside the city limits in Mississauga. It is the busiest airport in Canada. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) is the original Toronto airport and is located downtown on an island in the harbour. You can buy tickets on at least three airlines to a couple of dozen different destinations in Eastern Canada and the Eastern U.S. It has 11 gates but is limited to destinations within about 500nm due to its short runway (4000 feet). It is either the 9th or 10th busiest airport in Canada depending whether you are counting passengers or aircraft movements. Until recently, you had to take a ferry to get to YTZ, but they recently built a pedestrian tunnel. You can still take the ferry if you want, and park your car on the island. The ferry only takes about one minute as it is only a 400 foot journey. Vancouver and Victoria both have two airports as well. They each have a large international airport, but also both have water aerodromes in their downtown harbours with many airlines flying to regional destinations (including international flights to Seattle). Vancouver Harbour Control Tower is the only one in Canada specifically for a water aerodrome. It is on top of the Granville Square building and is 142m high (possibly the highest control tower in the world). Vancouver Harbour to Victoria Harbour has been a particularly busy route, with 3 or 4 airlines flying hourly flights.

Pretty clueless about LaGuardia. It handles 30 million passengers a year, not a "very small proportion of the population." That's more than an airport like Stanstead. If you closed it, there would be utter chaos. The delays at the NYC airports are caused by not enough airport runway slots to handle the traffic, not airspace restrictions. LGA currently undergoing a $2.5 billion total rebuild. And it's pronounced with a W sound, like Lah-Gwar-dee-ah. Fun Fact, LaGuardia was built after NYC mayor LaGuardia was flying from Chicago to New York in the 1930s, and refused to get off the plane when it landed at Newark, pointing to his ticket that said New York, not New Jersey.

LaGuardia is used mostly by domestic air carriers, however it can accept some internatioal flights, mostly from Canadian or Caribbean destinations with a Customs preclearance facility. While it is the closest, the fact that it is not easily accessible via public transportation (must take a bus from the subway) and due to flight restrictions, the farthest destination it serves is Denver. This leaves both Newark and JFK handling most direct long distance flights across the USA (mainly NYC to many west coast cities). You also mentioned the lack of privitization (non-government owned airports) in US airports. Stewart was part of a trial in the early 2000s to see if an airport can be privately owned. A British company was given a 99 year lease for $35m and a percentage of revenue, however after only 7 years, they sold the remaining 93 year lease back to another government agency for $75m. The main reason for the sale is unclear but some cite declining passenger counts and airlines ending service just after a huge capital improvement project worth at least $10m.

The Moscow segment is hilarious to me as a Moscow resident that would take at least a flight a year to India and usually another to a different country because we literally chose the airports based on the price and nothing else. Realistically it was Sheremetyevo or Domodedova, however when we flew to Egypt in 2009, we flew from Vnukovo (head of state airport) on a charter flight. While it's the only one I've been to once, we pass by it regularly in the summer since it's on the highway to our Dacha (google it tbh, basically a country house. But not. )
@shuriksvoboda68835 жыл бұрын
Once Moscow had an airport much closer to the city center (you can still see it in local toponymy - there's a metro station called Aeroport on the NW part of the green line, which is where that airport was located), but as the city grew up in size after WW2 these territories became completely surrounded by housing districts, so airport couldn't grow in size to get the bigger airplanes and had to be replaced with newer ones well outside the city. Though by now housing districts of Moscow suburbs are starting to surround three out of four existing airports as well, and there's little space for expansion even as the demand for flights to/from Moscow grows...

As for Bangkok: usually a city that serves as a major travel hub gets more "visits", which counts people just passing through. It's a similar reason to why France is the country with the most "tourists", its central location in Europe means a lot of people travel THROUGH France and don't necessarily stick around long.
