Ok, Josh, BIG kudos on this one fixing something epically stupid in VERY dangerous conditions. I'm going to give law enforcement a "fail" for not giving you a "safe" lane to work in, traffic is not that heavy. I'm going to give whoever loaded that an *EPIC* fail for doing it completely wrong!! A load of PVC pipe is 2 things. Plastic and air. Plastic goes on the bottom, air on top. ie, small pipe=less air, big pipe=more air. Therefore, little pipe on the bottom, big pipe on top. The fact that it's not even centered, *EPIC* fail. Again, job VERY well done!! You got it safe for them to move it and fix it. It's on them after that. P

California doesn’t enforce slow down move over. Most of the time it’s bumper to bumper anyway and there is no place to go. I first learned about the law from a Arizona State trooper who pulled me over on I-40 for not moving over. Look carefully because to me that is horribly loaded. The pipe on the back half of the trailer that shifted is in two vertical stacks. Look at the end shot at 29:09 and a left side shot at 28:40. Ignoring the small pipe on the top, the stack on the left is 6 pipes high and 3 wide in 3 groups of 2 high and 3 wide with wooden cribbing, while the stack on the right is 4 pipes high and 3 wide with 2 groups of 2 high and 3 wide with only a metal strap containing them. Also the two stacks are of unequal height with the stack on the left a few inches taller than the one on the right. Any strap passed through has to go up or down at the point between the two stacks, resulting in it lifting up and out on one of the pieces of pipe. Securing this so it won't shift without reloading will require more than just an extra belly strap 1/3 of the way up. Maybe adding extra cribbing on the right side so straps could go across horizontally, along with some diagonal strapping on the end would fully secure it. Also at the start, small pipe on the top right was obviously damaged by the strapping after the shift. It was crushed to the point of being deformed to the failure point. However, I suspect it was strapped most of that way from the start as the straps are almost midway between the cribbing.

Those small pipes should have been on the bottom because they are denser (heavier). AND I would have had 8 straps on each half of the trailer, with 4 of them diagonal across the corners. In the UK and Europe most loads are diagonal corners. Same with low loaders (lowboys) always diagonally chained. Keep up the content and try to stay safe
@richardreid6377
@richardreid6377 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately small pipe on the bottom wouldn't work because the crates of large pipe are a fair amount WIDER than those of the small pipe. (I work at a place that makes the stuff.) That size mix is practically a no win scenario for secure loading because 2 bundles of 10 inch (the left rear) is significantly taller than 2 bundles of 12 inch (the right rear) and the 12 inch is wide enough that you can't put two side by side without making a wide load so no way to even it out.
@richardreid6377
@richardreid6377 4 жыл бұрын
Oops; they crate the 10 inch differently than we do; but 3 crates 2 high still adds up to the same height mis match.
@monaromanmax
@monaromanmax 4 жыл бұрын
@@richardreid6377 OK, I understand, they have to be loaded that way. Diagonal strapping would have helped immensely. I have never seen diagonal strapping, or very few chains (except on track vehicles) in the States on KZbin. Is it illegal or just not done?

Obviously the re-rigging did wonders. But I wonder, at about the 21:00 mark on the video if the passenger side strap could have been loosened and a piece of timber blocking, about 4 feet long could have been placed vertically between the strap and the middle two rows of pipe. Just that extra 4 to 6 inches of bend in the strap might have been enough to slide those middle two rows of pipes over.

Plastic pipe in layers need to be squeezed from the high side of road then the low side as you tighten. You do not roll all the strap thru wenches as I saw these. Multiple layers takes more straps and trust me, I have hauled my share and when you strap them right there is no looking back. Live and learn but its better to be right the first time. I call this one driver error. I like your thought on the recovery, Josh right?,, but look at what you did in the second set up, made more of a squeeze. I realize the extra danger but if you could work both your catch and the squeeze side anchored inside off the rub rail you will be catching and squeezing either way with slight rotation, as you say BOOOOOMMMM!!! Still impressive with all the traffic, that alone creates nightmares.

Great job recovering that load on the trailer. I see a gold tractor is pulling this loaded trailer.............let me guess this was a C.R.S.T. truck driver. I was there for 6 moths while I earned & re-payed my CDL schooling . Upon completion of my contract, I left to go work at a company that had better safety standards. CRST will take ANYBODY with a pulse & place them behind the wheel of a truck! They DON'T even care if the person is competent with the task at hand, just as long as they can make a truck move down the highway! I know C.R.S.T. use to have a yard in that was on the boarder of Ontario & L.A.. 23 years ago was when I worked at that company. After almost being run off the highways by our own company trucks more times than I can remember, I had enough with them. Interstate Distribution Company of Tacoma Washington was my next home. Stayed there a lil over a year, before I got a gig as a local driver with a different company.

That's the difference between a "Driver" and a "Steering Wheel Holder"! Ironically, when hauling smaller (or mixed sizes) PVC pipe, tighter straps is NOT always the better way! They have to be tight, but not super strongman tight. Also, most of this guys winches were on the passenger side - they HAVE to be staggered side to side, or the result is just exactly what happened.

... too cocky? "I don't want to be too cocky?" CHIPS should've closed freeway. Too dangerous by far. Imagine, if yo will, the cars/pantechs/ trucks flying past (70mph), to be met by a rolling sea of plastic pipes? Bad decision, Pepe my dear. "The Gambler" in me says, ya, sure, I would've had my adrenaline 'boost' for the day. But Safety 1st [in me] that day would've crapped out! Lady Luck was on your side, that day. Lucky. [Phew!] You were lucky. Not the best choice, bra.

You're insane if you think CHP would have shut down the entire freeway for this. The safety line on the driver side of the truck would have prevented them from falling into the freeway. They're wrapped in layers as well, yes this job is innately risky but you have to have the confidence and equipment to get it done. CHP wouldn't have me as a vendor if I had to shut down the freeway every time I did a job. Literally no tow company does that.
